Hi! this is Mario, your host. I was born in Peru but grew up in Southeast Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal). Also lived in London and back in South America before moving to the States. I received a BFA in Dance and Theater from the University of Florida and danced professionally in the US and Canada for some years. Moved to NYC in 2008 and live in the Lower East Side just blocks from this property. I split my time between managing a yoga studio, dancing and choreographing and running FOOD FOR LIFE, a community organization that serves meals to the hungry and homeless of Lower Manhattan at Tompkins Square Park. I’m also a member of M.I.L.E (Music Is Love Exchange) a network of artists that help disadvantaged children and families in the highlands of Guatemala and a Regional Coordinator in Peru for ONE BILLION RISING, a global campaign to end violence against women and girls.
Mario Cornejo purchased this studio in 2011

Food for Life @ Tompkins Square Park is the heart and soul of Sanctuary NYC and we encourage our guests to join us and help serve meals to our hungry and homeless neighbors in East Village. It’s a unique, life changing and rewarding experience.
This was our first time using VRBO accommodation and our first time in New York. We had a great stay! We stayed in the Raja (2C) Apartment, which comfortably slept 4 of us. It was a wonderfully clean and modern apartment with everything you could possibly need. The corner shop across the road was very handy too. Once we found our way around, there were plenty of great restaurants and bars nearby. All staff were wonderful and helpful, no question was too much trouble to answer. The only thing to be aware of, is that this is a vegetarian establishment, thus you are unable to cook or consume any meat or eggs on the premises. This was not made clear in the initial booking process and was not an issue for me, but for others it may be. We loved the entire experience and will definitely recommend it!
We have stayed in New York many times, in almost every area of the city and as usual, it is always a bit nerve wracking when you choose somewhere different. In this case, from the booking, communication, help and kindness of all of the staff, our stay with various family and friends in three separate rooms over a 10 day period could not have been better. We got to experience the queen suites Hanuman and Shiva and the 1 bedroom (2 queen beds) Rama and each suite was spotlessly clean, well appointed, had extremely comfortable beds, smooth and soft linens, hot showers with fantastic water pressure, fluffy towels, shiny new appliances, sleek hardwood floors, irons with boards and any small thing that was desired was immediately delivered. We loved the patios (especially the huge one off of the Rama suite), they were perfect for the gathering of the 'clan' to celebrate before heading out for dinners. We all LOVED the area, so close to a zillion bars and restaurants, easy to negotiate, the Whole Foods and 2 subway stations are just blocks away so it is easy to get around either by foot, train or cab. Like most people, we didn't do a lot of cooking but the kitchens were a huge added bonus for light snacks, fresh fruit smoothies, chilled wine and early morning coffee/tea. We helped ourselves to breakfast downstairs (Mon - Fri) and then added our own personal touch upstairs which was a brilliant way to start the day. I would highly recommend everything about the Sanctuary Suites - Mario and Zach were a pleasure to deal with and very easy to reach with any questions. Thank you again and hope to stay again soon.

The breakfirst was amazing.
It was our second stay there and it won't be the Last!!!!
One of the nicest places we've stayed in Manhattan. It was a quiet retreat from the city, beautifully decorated, clean, and comfortable. The subway is nearby so it's easy to get to wherever you need to go. We would definitely come back.
The Lower East Side is the oldest neighborhood in New York City and presently one of the most fashionable in Manhattan. Once the home for working-class European immigrants, the LES has become one of the trendiest areas in the city full of cool boutique hotels, bars, restaurants, yoga studios, fashion stores, health food stores, art galleries and live music venues. Iconic artists like Marlon Brando, Robert DeNiro, Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen used to live on our street and countless movies and TV shows are filmed around throughout the year.
Just blocks away is the Delancey/Essex Subway Station and a quick train ride to Midtown (Union Square, Flatiron District, Empire State Building, Times Square and Central Park) or Brooklyn (Williamsburg, DUMBO). A few minutes walking and you can be anywhere Downtown: East Village, SoHo, West Village, Little Italy, Chinatown and East River Park.
