About Alec Smyth
My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?
Alec Smyth purchased this House in 2009
Why Alec Smyth chose Southeast Washington
The Yellow House is on a quiet street, yet so close to the US Capitol that it is within the perimeter patrolled by the Capitol security, within the area that is sealed off for Presidential inaugurations, etc. Most vacation rentals advertise proximity to Metro. We are two blocks from Metro, but chances are you will not take it because you are already so close to the major sites of interest. The house itself is much wider than the rowhouses typical of the neighborhood, and has an open floor plan. These features translate to a bright ambiance full of natural light. Please notice also what you see through the windows in the listing photos - trees!
What makes this House unique
There is a lot to see in Washington, with over fifty museums, but unfortunately we feature the very longest commutes in the nation. The museums have no parking, which may be a deliberate strategy to reduce the number of cars. Capitol Hill is the area immediately surrounding the US Capitol, and because it is a historical conservation neighborhood of small houses that cannot be altered, it contains almost no hotels. By staying at a home on the Western edge of Capitol Hill, you are closer to the sites than at a hotel, and free from the hassles of commuting because everything is within walking distance. Quite aside from the convenience of the location, both house and neighborhood are charming.

Second Time, Just As Wonderful!
This was the second time for our family (2 adults and 3 teenage boys) to stay at the Yellow House on Capital Hill. We visited DC last summer for a longer stay and thoroughly enjoyed the location, neighborhood and proximity to everything. This visit was shorter but did not disappoint. The house and the location were just as we had remembered. We took advantage of the nearby restaurants, coffee shops and grocery store. We walked to many of the sites in DC. The temporary parking pass is a huge advantage. We would highly recommend this house and this location. Whenever we are returning to the DC area we hope the Yellow House will be available for our stay!
Great DC location
We, thoroughly, enjoyed our stay. The Yellow House was perfectly situated near the Capitol in a quiet neighborhood. Upon arrival, we parked our car in front (thanks to the parking permit which was provided). The car didn’t move until our stay ended. It was within walking distance to the museums, monuments, shopping, and eateries.
The house comfortably accommodated our family of four (husband, teenager, 21-yr old and myself). The bedrooms are all located upstairs. A full bathroom is located on each floor. It came equipped with starter toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, soap and lotion. Little touches like a spice rack, paper products and umbrellas were well appreciated.
Thank you, Alec.
Excellent location for a family to stay and visit DC. Convenient to everything with great access to restaurants and the metro.
Wonderful stay with a But..
A very charming row house in a perfect location. As advertised, quiet, wonderful eastern market, trader joe, and super easy to walk around. Also as mentioned in the description, totally ready to welcome little ones. Crib is installed in one of the bedroom, and booster seats and strollers are available as well. In our case, we were on a multi generation trip with my elderly parents and I much rather would have preferred the crib out of the room. Not a huge deal. But still should be out. A bigger issue was that the air conditioning which is very needed in the summer works perfectly on first floor, but not so well upstairs, one of the room does not seem to have any outlet. Overall if you set the temp to 72 upstairs will easily be 82 degrees so we had to set temps at night to freezing 68 in order to be ok in the bedrooms. I used a fan, very much in need every day. Also, be aware that though a bath is downstairs, all bedrooms are upstairs, with one bath. The larger bath is down stairs, teenagers and I went down and left upstairs bath to my parents. Another concern, would be very steep stairs, which have a safety door for toddlers, that I used at Night . The bath door is literally next to stairs so at night it could be dangerous. Beds were fine for all of us. Rooms were tiny but that did not bother us. The mini kitchen was a bigger issue to us. It really only allows one person in at a time. Though, it encourages renters to leave staples behind and there are, cooking can be challenging. No fan or light above stove. Some part is currently missing, I would recommend not cooking fish inside...or stay with the smell for a while. Gas stove is nice and works well, appliances are there as described. All in working condition. Dishwasher is one of those narrow 20inches type... . Washer and dryers and supplies are great.. also don’t expect real updated baths... the upstairs is quite old and plumbing as well, downstairs is new plumbing and newer. Absolutely great towels.. and plenty of them.. overall place served us well, though we had hoped for a little more convenience in kitchen and bath, and AC..
The house was perfectly located to the Mall and restaurants in the Capitol Hill area. The house was very clean. The owner had a manual for the house with all the information you needed for your stay.
Nice clean property in great location.
The house is located on a quiet friendly Capitoll Hill block with a park at each end, around the corner from Pennsylvania Avenue with its restaurants and sidewalk cafes. The Capitol, Library of Congress, Eastern Market, Folger Shakespeare Library, and Metro (the underground) are all just a couple of blocks away. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs. The house is within the close-in perimeter of heightened security patrolled by the Washington Metropolitan Police, the US Capitol Police and the US Secret Service.
We recommend that visitors come without cars, because our location allows access to the sights on foot and by Metro. However, a free visitor parking permit is included in your rental just in case.
Other Activities: US Capitol, Smithsonian Museums, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, National Archives, Newseum, Folger Shakespeare
