Overview

About the property

1 King bed, 2 Fulls, 1 Queen and a full sized crib

This house is incredibly centrally located yet is also in a most peaceful spot, set back from a quiet street with a bicycle lane.

Within a radius of less two and a half blocks you will find the Library of Congress, a Metro station, Eastern Market, a Starbucks, and at the time of writing ten restaurants. The National Mall, around which the Smithsonian museums are clustered, is only a short walk away. The house has a Zillow walkability rating of 95 ('Walkers Paradise.') A rack of bright red public bicycles is half a block from your door.

The Yellow House is ideal for a family with children who would like to visit sites such as the Smithsonian museums, the US Capitol, Supreme Court, National Archives, the Library of Congress, or the Newseum, among many others. Our neighborhood, Capitol Hill, is a historical conservation area that is quaint, cosmopolitan, affluent, and highly secure. We are so close to the US Capitol that the house is inside the perimeter patrolled by Capitol security. The neighborhood is where most members of congress live.

The house comes with a little shopping cart, which you can take to the grocery store around the corner, or two blocks to Eastern Market, a wonderful 140 year old traditional market where greengrocers, butchers, bakers, etc. carry the absolute freshest groceries you will find anywhere in the city. Walking your shopping cart to Eastern Market, nobody will suspect you are a tourist.

Visitors who arrive by car typically park it for the duration of their stay. The house includes a parking permit.

Your rental comes with all linens, towels, a blow drier, high quality toiletries, and propane for the grill. All you need to bring is a tooth brush!

About Alec Smyth

My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?

Alec Smyth purchased this house in 2009

Why Alec Smyth chose Washington DC

The Yellow House is on a quiet street, yet so close to the US Capitol that it is within the perimeter patrolled by the Capitol security, within the area that is sealed off for Presidential inaugurations, etc. Most vacation rentals advertise proximity to Metro. We are two blocks from Metro, but chances are you will not take it because you are already so close to the major sites of interest.

The house itself is much wider than the rowhouses typical of the neighborhood, and has an open floor plan. These features translate to a bright ambiance full of natural light. Please notice also what you see through the windows in the listing photos - trees!

What makes this house unique

There is a lot to see in Washington, with over fifty museums, but unfortunately we feature the very longest commutes in the nation. The museums have no parking, which may be a deliberate strategy to reduce the number of cars. Capitol Hill is the area immediately surrounding the US Capitol, and because it is a historical conservation neighborhood of small houses that cannot be altered, it contains almost no hotels. By staying at a home on the Western edge of Capitol Hill, you are closer to the sites than at a hotel, and free from the hassles of commuting because everything is within walking distance. Quite aside from the convenience of the location, both house and neighborhood are charming.

Guestbook comments from the owner

HI Alec,

We had such a great time we did not want to leave! Your home was really wonderful and we will definitely contact you again next time we come to DC. Quick question – do you know what the mattress was on the king bed? We found it to be really comfortable. Thanks again!

A perfect spot in Washington!

  • 5 of 5

My family had the best stay in the Yellow House this past week... It's a beautiful place to come home to, even more beautiful than the great photos online! Everything was clean and well maintained, and owner was helpful with questions prior to our arrival. It was a treat to stay in a place that was quiet and safe, yet also close to the sites of Capitol Hill and many small restaurants. We would like to come back to enjoy more of the same, but also to see the front and back gardens when things are in bloom. Book a stay yourself if you are lucky enough to see availability left for your dates of travel!

The yellow house was perfect for a family visit to DC.

  • 5 of 5

Our family visited DC after a college graduation in Baltimore. It was a perfect house for a family visit to DC, plenty of room and so nice to have a kitchen and a beautiful living/ dining room. It was as described on the web site, great location, and the "Yellow house booklet" was very helpful! Thanks for a great stay!

A Special D.C. Neighborhood Experience

  • 4 of 5

I am so glad we chose to stay at the Yellow House! The experience we had living among the locals, walking to the neighborhood grocery stores and eating at the nearby restaurants made our trip extra special. The house was ideally located and very clean. We used the Metro to get to our starting and ending points daily which is conveniently located two and a half blocks from the house. The only reason I would not give it 5 stars is the upstairs bathroom has very poor water pressure and the dryer did not work very well. All in all I would definitely recommend the "Yellow House" to my friends and family.

Fabulous Family Location

  • 5 of 5

We had the privilege of staying in the Yellow House for our recent family trip to Washington DC. Before we even arrived, Alec had provided me with all the details pertaining to the house as well as the surrounding area to acclimate prior to our arrival. The home itself is lovely and spacious, well equipped with the day to day necessities, and beautifully appointed with luxury linens. Alec set up a crib in advance for our toddler and all the rooms were very comfortable. The location of this home cannot be beat!! We were able to walk almost everywhere and the location in proximity to the sights made it easy to hop on the DC Circulator to get to the more distant sights on the Mall. I must recommend grabbing a pizza at We, the Pizza and burgers and shakes at Good Stuff Eatery...all just around the block.

Thank you so much Alec for your prompt response to my questions and for sharing your wonderful property!

Lovely home - great location !

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of staying at this lovely property for a week-long family (2 adults, 3 seniors) trip to Washington. The location is excellent in a quiet residential neighbourhood with a Metro stop, the Capitol building, and restaurants all within a 10-15 minute walk. There is a convenient gas station around the corner and we even found a wonderful outdoor Sunday market just down the block. The kitchen is well equipped and we also made use of the backyard grill. The beds are very comfortable, the bathrooms well supplied with toiletries and plush towels and the on-street parking is a bonus. As this was our first trip to D.C., we very much appreciated the wealth of information outlined by the owner in the handbook provided. I would add that, as you would expect in a heritage home, the hardwood floors are somewhat creaky so if you have a light sleeper and night wanderers that might be a consideration. Were I to visit Washington in the future, I would not hesitate to book here again.

Map

Car: not necessary

The house is located on a quiet friendly Capitoll Hill block with a park at each end, around the corner from Pennsylvania Avenue with its restaurants and sidewalk cafes. The Capitol, Library of Congress, Eastern Market, Folger Shakespeare Library, and Metro (the underground) are all just a couple of blocks away. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs. The house is within the close-in perimeter of heightened security patrolled by the Washington Metropolitan Police, the US Capitol Police and the US Secret Service.

We recommend that visitors come without cars, because our location allows access to the sights on foot and by Metro. However, a free visitor parking permit is included in your rental just in case.

Other Activities: US Capitol, Smithsonian Museums, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, National Archives, Newseum, Folger Shakespeare
