This house is incredibly centrally located yet is also in a most peaceful spot, set back from a quiet street with a bicycle lane.
Within a radius of less two and a half blocks you will find the Library of Congress, a Metro station, Eastern Market, a Starbucks, and at the time of writing ten restaurants. The National Mall, around which the Smithsonian museums are clustered, is only a short walk away. The house has a Zillow walkability rating of 95 ('Walkers Paradise.') A rack of bright red public bicycles is half a block from your door.
The Yellow House is ideal for a family with children who would like to visit sites such as the Smithsonian museums, the US Capitol, Supreme Court, National Archives, the Library of Congress, or the Newseum, among many others. Our neighborhood, Capitol Hill, is a historical conservation area that is quaint, cosmopolitan, affluent, and highly secure. We are so close to the US Capitol that the house is inside the perimeter patrolled by Capitol security. The neighborhood is where most members of congress live.
The house comes with a little shopping cart, which you can take to the grocery store around the corner, or two blocks to Eastern Market, a wonderful 140 year old traditional market where greengrocers, butchers, bakers, etc. carry the absolute freshest groceries you will find anywhere in the city. Walking your shopping cart to Eastern Market, nobody will suspect you are a tourist.
Visitors who arrive by car typically park it for the duration of their stay. The house includes a parking permit.
Your rental comes with all linens, towels, a blow drier, high quality toiletries, and propane for the grill. All you need to bring is a tooth brush!

The Yellow House is on a quiet street, yet so close to the US Capitol that it is within the perimeter patrolled by the Capitol security, within the area that is sealed off for Presidential inaugurations, etc. Most vacation rentals advertise proximity to Metro. We are two blocks from Metro, but chances are you will not take it because you are already so close to the major sites of interest.
The house itself is much wider than the rowhouses typical of the neighborhood, and has an open floor plan. These features translate to a bright ambiance full of natural light. Please notice also what you see through the windows in the listing photos - trees!
There is a lot to see in Washington, with over fifty museums, but unfortunately we feature the very longest commutes in the nation. The museums have no parking, which may be a deliberate strategy to reduce the number of cars. Capitol Hill is the area immediately surrounding the US Capitol, and because it is a historical conservation neighborhood of small houses that cannot be altered, it contains almost no hotels. By staying at a home on the Western edge of Capitol Hill, you are closer to the sites than at a hotel, and free from the hassles of commuting because everything is within walking distance. Quite aside from the convenience of the location, both house and neighborhood are charming.

My family had the best stay in the Yellow House this past week... It's a beautiful place to come home to, even more beautiful than the great photos online! Everything was clean and well maintained, and owner was helpful with questions prior to our arrival. It was a treat to stay in a place that was quiet and safe, yet also close to the sites of Capitol Hill and many small restaurants. We would like to come back to enjoy more of the same, but also to see the front and back gardens when things are in bloom. Book a stay yourself if you are lucky enough to see availability left for your dates of travel!
We just returned from a week long trip to DC, and loved our stay at the Yellow House. The location can't be beat, and Alec was very responsive. Highly recommend!
The house is located in a really safe and adorable neighborhood within 2 miles of all the main attractions. We would wake up, walk to the local coffee shop or cafe, jump on the metro (4 blocks away), and head down to the malls. It was perfect!
The one negative about the house is that it's impossible to be quiet in it. It's old therefore the wood floors creek with every step and voices can be heard easily between floors and walls. So, I wouldn't stay here if you have a little one that's a light sleeper.
Just spent 4 nights at the Yellow House and had a great vacation. There were 6 of us (2 seniors, 2 parents and 2 teenaged grandchildren) and there was something for all of us to enjoy in DC. This house was an ideal location for all of our outings (Zoo, museums and memorials/monuments). I (one of the "seniors" ) have a Fitbit so I walked to everything but the Zoo. The others learned to navigate the Metro which is a short walk from the house. We had no idea how to buy tickets but the workers onsite were very helpful as were the local residents of DC. We were surprised with the friendly and polite people we encountered everywhere we went. The house is also conveniently located to the Eastern Market and many restaurants. We tried the ones that the owner had recommended in the booklet at the house and agreed with his assessment (the pizza was amazing!) We also tried some other local places and enjoyed our meals there as well. Though the house is set up for grilling and cooking meals, we were all too busy planning our outings to shop and too tired afterwards to have cooked, so we ate all of our meals at nearby restaurants.
The house was very clean and the towels and linens were top quality. Everything was ready for us upon entry and the instructions for checking in and out were very complete. The book that was in the house gives lots of tips and the owner's sense of humor is evident as well. I had to contact the owner once and he returned my call within 5 minutes. The times I emailed him prior to our vacation, he also responded immediately. It was clear that having satisfied renters was important to him and he wanted us to have a worry free and fun vacation at his home.
The only problem we encountered was with trying to find parking for our 2nd car. The lot that was listed in the booklet was full (it appeared to be packed with construction worker's vehicles, which the owner could not have foreseen). We got online and found a reasonably priced indoor garage through SpotHero which solved our problem. It was farther away than some people might think acceptable, but the spaces were large and the staff at the garage was wonderful ...and, as mentioned above, we don't mind a little walking.
Another great family vacation.....everything was exactly as described on the VRBO site.

From the moment our party of 6 (4 adults and 2 kids) walked through the front door we felt comfortable and relaxed. The leafy location was quiet and yet still only a five minute walk to cafes, shops and the subway. Alec was a fantastic host. Very responsive and provided plenty of useful information about things to do etc. Thanks Alec for an amazing stay.
The house is located on a quiet friendly Capitoll Hill block with a park at each end, around the corner from Pennsylvania Avenue with its restaurants and sidewalk cafes. The Capitol, Library of Congress, Eastern Market, Folger Shakespeare Library, and Metro (the underground) are all just a couple of blocks away. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs. The house is within the close-in perimeter of heightened security patrolled by the Washington Metropolitan Police, the US Capitol Police and the US Secret Service.
We recommend that visitors come without cars, because our location allows access to the sights on foot and by Metro. However, a free visitor parking permit is included in your rental just in case.
