Overview

About the property

1 King bed, 2 Fulls, 1 Queen and a full sized crib

This house is incredibly centrally located yet is also in a most peaceful spot, set back from a quiet street with a bicycle lane.

Within a radius of less two and a half blocks you will find the Library of Congress, a Metro station, Eastern Market, a Starbucks, and at the time of writing ten restaurants. The National Mall, around which the Smithsonian museums are clustered, is only a short walk away. The house has a Zillow walkability rating of 95 ('Walkers Paradise.') A rack of bright red public bicycles is half a block from your door.

The Yellow House is ideal for a family with children who would like to visit sites such as the Smithsonian museums, the US Capitol, Supreme Court, National Archives, the Library of Congress, or the Newseum, among many others. Our neighborhood, Capitol Hill, is a historical conservation area that is quaint, cosmopolitan, affluent, and highly secure. We are so close to the US Capitol that the house is inside the perimeter patrolled by Capitol security. The neighborhood is where most members of congress live.

The house comes with a little shopping cart, which you can take to the grocery store around the corner, or two blocks to Eastern Market, a wonderful 140 year old traditional market where greengrocers, butchers, bakers, etc. carry the absolute freshest groceries you will find anywhere in the city. Walking your shopping cart to Eastern Market, nobody will suspect you are a tourist.

Visitors who arrive by car typically park it for the duration of their stay. The house includes a parking permit.

Your rental comes with all linens, towels, a blow drier, high quality toiletries, and propane for the grill. All you need to bring is a tooth brush!

About Alec Smyth

My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?

Alec Smyth purchased this house in 2009

Why Alec Smyth chose Eastern Market

The Yellow House is on a quiet street, yet so close to the US Capitol that it is within the perimeter patrolled by the Capitol security, within the area that is sealed off for Presidential inaugurations, etc. Most vacation rentals advertise proximity to Metro. We are two blocks from Metro, but chances are you will not take it because you are already so close to the major sites of interest.

The house itself is much wider than the rowhouses typical of the neighborhood, and has an open floor plan. These features translate to a bright ambiance full of natural light. Please notice also what you see through the windows in the listing photos - trees!

What makes this house unique

There is a lot to see in Washington, with over fifty museums, but unfortunately we feature the very longest commutes in the nation. The museums have no parking, which may be a deliberate strategy to reduce the number of cars. Capitol Hill is the area immediately surrounding the US Capitol, and because it is a historical conservation neighborhood of small houses that cannot be altered, it contains almost no hotels. By staying at a home on the Western edge of Capitol Hill, you are closer to the sites than at a hotel, and free from the hassles of commuting because everything is within walking distance. Quite aside from the convenience of the location, both house and neighborhood are charming.

Guestbook comments from the owner

HI Alec,

We had such a great time we did not want to leave! Your home was really wonderful and we will definitely contact you again next time we come to DC. Quick question – do you know what the mattress was on the king bed? We found it to be really comfortable. Thanks again!

A perfect spot in Washington!

  • 5 of 5

My family had the best stay in the Yellow House this past week... It's a beautiful place to come home to, even more beautiful than the great photos online! Everything was clean and well maintained, and owner was helpful with questions prior to our arrival. It was a treat to stay in a place that was quiet and safe, yet also close to the sites of Capitol Hill and many small restaurants. We would like to come back to enjoy more of the same, but also to see the front and back gardens when things are in bloom. Book a stay yourself if you are lucky enough to see availability left for your dates of travel!

Perfect home base for a wedding weekend

  • 4 of 5

My siblings, parents, and I rented this house together for my sister's wedding. She lives right around the corner so it was super convenient to be so close to her home and the reception at Easter Market.

We used the living room as the getting ready space for the ladies in the wedding, and to host a small breakfast for immediate family the morning after the wedding. Space was clean, well lit, and comfortable. The kitchen is pretty small but fairly well stocked with appliances and pans, etc. One downside was that there weren't any wine or champagne glasses. They could stand to stock up on more cheap, basic dish ware. They do have a well stocked spice rack and there's a mix of teas and coffee left over from previous visitors. They leave reusable items from previous guests like peanut butter, ketchup, etc. so check the cabinets before you go shopping if you're there for a few days. Many basics may already be in the house.

Three bedrooms upstairs with 4 beds - 2 full in one room, a king in one room, and a queen in the last room. There's a full bath upstairs, as well as a full bath on the first floor. Bathrooms are stocked with basic hotel toiletries and towels although check the labels before you use them. There was a bottle of shampoo and a bottle of lotion in one shower so I accidentally tried to condition my hair with body lotion. Didn't work so well. It's a bit on me for not reading the bottle, but when there's two bottles inside the shower, you kinda just assume.

We didn't use them, but there's also a washer and drier on the first floor. Outdoor space is pretty and not too small for the neighborhood. We didn't use the grill, but did sit outside for a bit.

The owner is responsive and communicative. He even let me extend our check out time from 11am to 1pm so we'd have more time to linger over breakfast in the morning before heading to the airport. I would definitely stay here again!

Best location in DC!

  • 5 of 5

I don't think we could have found a better location for our visit to our nation's capital. It was close to everything we needed-metro, restaurants, groceries, smithsonian museums, the capitol, etc. The owner provided us with a great booklet of information on nearby restaurants, transportation, and things to see and do in the area. We even had a bin of umbrellas for our use, which came in handy on the rainy days. The neighborhood is quiet, safe and charming and we loved walking to and from the metro and area stores and restaurants. This is a first class house and location and we highly recommend it to families.

We will stay again!

  • 4 of 5

The Yellow House was our haven last week while vacationing with our grandchildren. We were able to walk to many sites, cook and eat in as well as eat at the nearby restaurants. The neighborhood is quiet, safe and easy to navigate. We used the laundry facilities and appreciated all the written suggestions the owners provided. The wooden floors are charmingly squeaky. The internet did flick on and off quite a bit and some days the trash did not get picked up from the curb as indicated. All in all, I highly recommend this home and we use it again.

Map

Car: not necessary

The house is located on a quiet friendly Capitoll Hill block with a park at each end, around the corner from Pennsylvania Avenue with its restaurants and sidewalk cafes. The Capitol, Library of Congress, Eastern Market, Folger Shakespeare Library, and Metro (the underground) are all just a couple of blocks away. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs. The house is within the close-in perimeter of heightened security patrolled by the Washington Metropolitan Police, the US Capitol Police and the US Secret Service.

We recommend that visitors come without cars, because our location allows access to the sights on foot and by Metro. However, a free visitor parking permit is included in your rental just in case.

Other Activities: US Capitol, Smithsonian Museums, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, National Archives, Newseum, Folger Shakespeare
