About the property

House 3BR/2.5BA (Sleeps 7-9). Pls inquire about add'l lodging for larger groups

Mountainside Lodge is located in the heart of historic downtown Harper's Ferry, and in the middle of Harper's Ferry National Historical Park. Don't be fooled by other vacation rentals and B&B's claiming to be in Harpers Ferry when they are not! This one-of-a-kind vacation rental is located in a 2-1/2 story brick federal-period building built in the 1830's, and renovated in 2004-2005. The house shares the building with a family-style restaurant (Potomac Grille). The house was originally 2 townhouses, and the center walls were removed in the 1970s to create a large open space on the 1st floor. While the house's exterior painting scheme reflects this original configuration and looks like 2 separate units, the vacation rental spans both spaces (see photo). The building was used during the civil war by both Confederate and Union Armies, primarily as an infirmary/hospital, and is a stop on the Harpers Ferry Ghost Tour.

The first floor of the house features a large open living room/dining room, a full modern kitchen, 1/2 bath, and a large porch with fantastic mountain and river views and views of Harpers Ferry gap. The inside space features hard-wood floors, exposed brick walls, an exposed beam ceiling (many of the beams are original hand-hewn), and large windows looking onto the mountains and the Potomac River. There is a TV, DVD player, VCR, games and toys, and a 10-seat dining table on the 1st floor. A highchair is available upon request. In addition to modern amenities, the house is decorated in fantastic period antiques.

The second floor has 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths and a laundry room w/ full-sized washer and dryer, and offers views of the Potomac River. The master bedroom has a Queen bed and a comfortable full-size futon (comfortable for 1 adult or 2 children). The second bedroom has a Queen bed, and the 3rd bedroom has a twin/full bunk bed (twin on top; full on bottom). The configuration is ideal for two families (4 adults and up to 5 kids), 2-3 couples, or 6-7 friends! All three bedrooms have TVs and DVD players and comfy sheets, mattresses and pillows.

The building sits atop a steep hill, and there are 65 stairs leading down to the 2 parking spaces reserved for the vacation rental in the rear of the building. The front-door to the house is at street-level, so door-to-door drop-off of luggage is possible.

Why Jill chose Harpers Ferry

Location! While you will find many vacation homes with an address of 'Harpers Ferry', they are not actually IN historic downtown Harpers Ferry amongst the museums, natural beauty and history. But this one is, check out the map.

What makes this house unique

This vacation rental is located in the heart of downtown historic Harpers Ferry and in the middle of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. It offers fantastic views, historic charm and significance, and prime location. It is amongst museums, shops & restaurants, steps from the Potomac & Shenandoah Rivers, the C&O canal towpath, Jefferson Rock, Virginius Island, the Appalachian Trail, Maryland Heights and Loudoun Heights. Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races is a short drive away, as are a number of Virginia Wineries. There is a large porch that looks onto the mountains, the Potomac River, and Harpers Ferry gap. Kids (and train-loving grown-ups) love to watch the trains pass on the very active rail line and you can even ride the train to this destination, as it is in walking distance to the Harpers Ferry train station, which services both MARC and AMTRAK. The house is bicycle friendly (there is ample space inside to store bikes), and being within walking distance to the C&O canal towpath, is a perfect spot for towpath riders. There are fantastic hikes, from easy to strenuous, right outside the front door (no need to drive). The house offers a large open floor plan perfect for larger gatherings, and the whole home is clean, nicely furnished and maintained. We strive for customer service and try to provide everything that a guest might need, including detergents and hand soaps, sugar, salt, pepper, basic spices, coffee filters, toilet paper, papertowels, napkins, etc., etc., etc. Our guests tell us over and over that this is the most well-stocked vacation rental that they have ever visited.

Great location and wonderful space

  • 5 of 5

The house was ideal for our family. There was plenty of room to spread out. The large dining table was great for family meals, for board games and puzzles. The house was a warm respite during our very cold trip to Harpers Ferry. Our family enjoyed exploring the trails, national park and shops around town. But most of all, everyone loved hanging out at the house.

The house is situated right in town close to all the shops. It is also near the railroad tracks. If you love to watch the trains roll by day and night, this location is perfect!

Wonderful place for a family celebration

  • 5 of 5

Everyone in our family had a terrific time in Harpers Ferry over the Thanksgiving holiday. The kitchen was very well stocked with almost all the equipment we needed to cook a huge Thanksgiving feast. The living area was huge and very well suited to conversation and board games (which are provided!). Everyone was comfortable over the long weekend, and the town provided plenty to see and lots of hikes and long walks. .

Jill, the owner, was extremely helpful and welcoming. We can't wait to return!

Great place for a romantic weekend or a gathering with family. Dog lover's paradise.

  • 5 of 5

Quaint civil war era Harper's Ferry brick and stone house overlooking the railroad and river junction. Kitchen upgraded and had everything we needed. We hardly noticed the restaurant in the basement. Jill, the owner, was responsive and provided perfect directions.

Awesome experience

  • 5 of 5

The mountainside lodge in the heart of Harpers Ferry is an awesome place to stay. The accommodations were clean and comfortable. The home is almost 200 years old, so it has much charm, history & it’s share of squeaky floors. The area is very hilly with roughly 70 steep steps to climb from the parking area to the front door, but you have the ability for curbside unloading of luggage & passengers. It may not be ideal for those with small children, those using strollers or those with limited mobility, but then neither is Harpers Ferry. The owner was very attentive addressing questions and very accommodating, letting us check in hours before the designated check in time. There is an active train station across the street, some nights we were awaken several times by trains passing through. If you’re a light sleeper you’ll need earplugs, which luckily they provide. Harpers Ferry is an area rich in history and well worth your time. I would certainly go back again & would want to stay in the mountainside lodge.

Perfect spot for the whole family!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a great weekend in Harper's Ferry at this house! It is lovely and RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of everything. Watch the trains come and go, enjoy the views, park right in the center of the action, take hikes, play in the water, eat and get treats and coffee, watch movies, cook with your friends and family, get a great nights sleep - we did it all! And super friendly helpful hosts.
