Harpers Ferry House Rental Photos and Description

House 3BR/2.5BA (Sleeps 7-9). Pls inquire about add'l lodging for larger groups

Mountainside Lodge is located in the heart of historic downtown Harper's Ferry, and in the middle of Harper's Ferry National Historical Park. Don't be fooled by other vacation rentals and B&B's claiming to be in Harpers Ferry when they are not! This one-of-a-kind vacation rental is located in a 2-1/2 story brick federal-period building built in the 1830's, and renovated in 2004-2005. The house shares the building with a family-style restaurant (Potomac Grille). The house was originally 2 townhouses, and the center walls were removed in the 1970s to create a large open space on the 1st floor. While the house's exterior painting scheme reflects this original configuration and looks like 2 separate units, the vacation rental spans both spaces (see photo). The building was used during the civil war by both Confederate and Union Armies, primarily as an infirmary/hospital, and is a stop on the Harpers Ferry Ghost Tour.

The first floor of the house features a large open living room/dining room, a full modern kitchen, 1/2 bath, and a large porch with fantastic mountain and river views and views of Harpers Ferry gap. The inside space features hard-wood floors, exposed brick walls, an exposed beam ceiling (many of the beams are original hand-hewn), and large windows looking onto the mountains and the Potomac River. There is a TV, DVD player, VCR, games and toys, and a 10-seat dining table on the 1st floor. A highchair is available upon request. In addition to modern amenities, the house is decorated in fantastic period antiques.

The second floor has 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths and a laundry room w/ full-sized washer and dryer, and offers views of the Potomac River. The master bedroom has a Queen bed and a comfortable full-size futon (comfortable for 1 adult or 2 children). The second bedroom has a Queen bed, and the 3rd bedroom has a twin/full bunk bed (twin on top; full on bottom). The configuration is ideal for two families (4 adults and up to 5 kids), 2-3 couples, or 6-7 friends! All three bedrooms have TVs and DVD players and comfy sheets, mattresses and pillows.

The building sits atop a steep hill, and there are 65 stairs leading down to the 2 parking spaces reserved for the vacation rental in the rear of the building. The front-door to the house is at street-level, so door-to-door drop-off of luggage is possible.

Why Jill chose West Virginia

Location! While you will find many vacation homes with an address of 'Harpers Ferry', they are not actually IN historic downtown Harpers Ferry amongst the museums, natural beauty and history. But this one is, check out the map.

What makes this house unique

This vacation rental is located in the heart of downtown historic Harpers Ferry and in the middle of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. It offers fantastic views, historic charm and significance, and prime location. It is amongst museums, shops & restaurants, steps from the Potomac & Shenandoah Rivers, the C&O canal towpath, Jefferson Rock, Virginius Island, the Appalachian Trail, Maryland Heights and Loudoun Heights. Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races is a short drive away, as are a number of Virginia Wineries. There is a large porch that looks onto the mountains, the Potomac River, and Harpers Ferry gap. Kids (and train-loving grown-ups) love to watch the trains pass on the very active rail line and you can even ride the train to this destination, as it is in walking distance to the Harpers Ferry train station, which services both MARC and AMTRAK. The house is bicycle friendly (there is ample space inside to store bikes), and being within walking distance to the C&O canal towpath, is a perfect spot for towpath riders. There are fantastic hikes, from easy to strenuous, right outside the front door (no need to drive). The house offers a large open floor plan perfect for larger gatherings, and the whole home is clean, nicely furnished and maintained. We strive for customer service and try to provide everything that a guest might need, including detergents and hand soaps, sugar, salt, pepper, basic spices, coffee filters, toilet paper, papertowels, napkins, etc., etc., etc. Our guests tell us over and over that this is the most well-stocked vacation rental that they have ever visited.

This was the best place to stay. It was beautiful and comfortable. A perfect location.

We had the best time. Only had a couple days to get away. Jill was great to rent from. We could walk everywhere. There were even toys for the baby! The house is beautiful! We did the Maryland Heights hike. A challenge but worth it. A charming town. We did have To drive for dinner one night. The Potomac street grill in Brunswick was wonderful. I hope we get to come back again

Amazing house in Harper's Ferry historic district!

  • 5 of 5

If you want to stay right in the middle of history, this is the place! Beautiful townhouse among shops, restaurants and museums, yet very quiet. The house was built in the 1830's and is beautifully restored. It is across the street from the train station - you don't even have to drive here! The owners have thought of everything you could possibly need, and were extremely helpful and attentive. My friends and I had a wonderful time walking around town, and hope to stay here again soon. I also highly recommend the nearby River Riders and Adventure Park!

Awesome spot!

  • 4 of 5

We had a terrific time in Harper's Ferry, and Mountainside Lodge is a great place to stay. The house is stocked with everything you'd need, and the location can't be beat as a jumping-off point for hiking, tubing or just exploring Harper's Ferry. There are two things travelers should know about the place, however: First, everything shuts down in this section of Harper's Ferry by 8pm. Don't expect find a place to eat within walking distance after dark. Second, trains come by all night long, and when they blow their horns, as many do, expect to be woken up. As a group of friends, it was not a huge deal as we all could just sleep in. However, if you're traveling with little ones, you may want to consider the noise at night first.

Overall, we loved the place. The back deck has terrific views, and it is a truly unique place to stay. If you plan on cooking for yourself and don't mind the trains, you'll love Mountainside Lodge.

Beautiful Property!

  • 5 of 5

Right in the heart of town! There are shops and restaurants on all directions no more than a few steps away. Amazing view of the Maryland Heights across the Potomac. Historic home that has been well cared for and comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked and well laid out with all the modern necessities, and the dining table is plenty spacious to feed your entire party and still have room at the other end for that puzzle you are working on (a few are even there waiting for you).

The area is amazing for hiking and history, or just sitting on the deck enjoying the views. Sadly a fire took out a few buildings down town that they are currently working on rebuilding but many businesses are still open and showing the strength of the area. We were able to make Baltimore and DC day trips with plenty of time for a game at Camden Yards and a full day at the National Zoo.

We will definitely be staying here again someday to enjoy more that the town has to offer!

Many thanks to the owners, they really go out of their way to make sure everything is going well with your stay and are available should you need anything.

Amazing historical home!!

  • 5 of 5

This home is everything that it is depicted and more! Great location, spectacular views, immaculate, and the amenities and host are top notch. It was every bit what we had hoped for. Jill is super attentive and very detailed with all/any instructions. We were greeted with a handwritten welcome note and bottle of wine on our arrival. Her response time was immediate with any of our questions/concerns. The home warrants a 10+ rating. It has the Old World charm and ambiance of the early 1800's yet all of the conveniences and beauty of new (washer/dryer, granite counter tops, flat screen TV's, pellet stove insert-which was fabulous for the cool nights- and so much more). Beautifully and comfortably furnished, Jill has excellent taste and all of your comforts will be met. Great fun to watch the bald eagles over the Potomac just across the street as well as the hikers on the mountain or the trains as they pull into the train station. All this can be leisurely viewed as you relax on the expansive back deck-great place to take in some sun! A real plus was all of the museums and exhibits depicting the local history/legends-all within walking distance as you are in the heart of the activity with this home. You can see three states from this location and walk to the Appalachian Trail from the home, crossing over the Potomac on a fantastic foot bridge. Be sure and take in the ghost tour for a special treat, it starts at the Catholic Church which is another historical site that you don't want to miss, and again, within walking distance. Don't let the back elevation/steps deter you from this home, super easy access for luggage/groceries with the front drive up access, per Jill's detailed instructions. Super quaint town with great little shops but be warned, hard to shop or dine after 5-6 PM. They roll the sidewalks up around that time this early in the year. We found it hard to walk to a restaurant and find one open before 11:30 or after 5:30. Six hour working days seem to be the norm for Harpers Ferry in March....

Plenty of larger stores/restaurants within a 5 mile driving radius tho so no problem.

We highly recommend this vacation rental! Thanks Jill for a fantastic memory making vacation for our family, we hope to return!!

Renay S.
