Overview

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)

For nearly 100 years, I have sat at the water’s edge on Morro Bay. I am a romantic guest hideaway for lovers … lovers of nature, art, thought, books, wine, adventure, discovery, solitude and soul, but especially for those who love and love to nurture themselves.

There are no jangling phones, blaring TVs, traffic sounds or other intrusions. Instead, I offer you the rare opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, and quiet. You will hear the distance sound of waves crashing on the beach, and the shorebirds as they forage for food in front of my deck. I am your refuge and your retreat for exploring all that is around me, and all that is within you.

Every house has a story. I invite you to visit, and become part of mine.

As you approach the first time...you gaze upon my small green façade and begin to think of the potential that awaits now just out of sight. We both, you and I, stand on the edge of transformation … for we are about to begin a memorable experience with one another.

I have a tale to tell, my very own…won’t you come inside awhile and help me sing my song?

I may be just a small beach cottage, but step through my purple entry and you’ll be welcomed by an eclectic mixture of art and antiques collected by my family over three generations and lovingly displayed to create a romantic and intimate environment to inspire you during your stay.

I have seen and heard many things in my four score and 15 years. Like all places where people dwell, there is a spirit here that has been shaped by the personalities, conversations, and temperament of those who have spent time within my walls. I have been occupied by children, parents and grandparents.

My family has studied for tests and entrance exams here, and baked more pies than you can imagine. My visitors have included travelers, adventurers, famous authors and song writers, renown painters, one of America‘s most celebrated outdoor photographers, naturalists, newlyweds … and by my owners’ generations of artists and lovers of life. All of their presence lingers in the air, and invites you to both partake and contribute your own essence to my evolving character.

I am halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, quietly sitting between the Pacific Ocean and the rolling hillsides of open ranchland, in the small town of Los Osos. Nestled along the southern tidal estuary of Morro Bay, I sit on the smog-free coast of Central California. I'm just 20-minutes from San Luis Obispo through lush agricultural and cattle grazing countryside.

Get away from your fast-paced world. VISIT -- Take a deep breath of clean, clear ocean air. STAY -- Life is too short to rush through. PLAY -- like a local: frolic on the water, hike in the hills, sample some great wines and just sit quietly and watch nature unfold around you.

Sigh.

About Pandora Nash-Karner

The Cottage has been in our family for two generations. We have lived on the bay for almost four decades and love it, and love to share it with others. The Cottage was originally built to shelter the duck hunters and fishermen who were attracted here, but it was soon bought in the 1950's by our parents and was used as a residence while they built their dream home next door. The Cottage has been our family's guesthouse since then and we've recently made it available as a vacation rental. The charm as a family retreat has been retained through the complete refurbishing received in 2009. We have designed the Cottage to provide our guests with the perfect opportunity to immerse themselves in the Central Coast experience. We are not the Hyatt (on purpose!) -- just the opposite. We provide a unique EXPERIENCE to our guests. We want them to feel they are staying in their favorite aunt's beach cottage while she is away sailing through the South Seas, and she left them the keys to her special place and her prized possessions. What our guests won't find here are ringing phones, blaring TV or fax machines, or lists of rules permanently affixed to the walls -- all by design. We we do provide wireless internet service and a 38' HDTV for watching DVDs, plus over 400 DVDs to choose from. We want the cottage to provide guests with the ability to ESCAPE the fast-paced world. We've tried to provide everything we can think of to make our guests feel pampered and comfortable. And if ever they need anything, we are happy to make sure they have it within minutes. Come see why we have over 170 5-star reviews.

Why Pandora Nash-Karner chose Central Coast California

The Green Cottage has been a private guest house for our family for over 6 decades. When it is not used by the family, it is available for visitors. Come see why so many people think it is so special.

What makes this cottage unique

The bay is part of the National Estuary Program, as well as a designated bird sanctuary. There are many places nearby to view birds, including a private dock. Morro Bay is an important stopover on the Pacific Flyway and winter home to numerous bird species. The north coast area of San Luis Obispo County is a haven for artists, wine and food aficionados, water sports enthusiasts, antique collectors, hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, and people who appreciate quiet, undiscovered get-away locations. When the lure of open spaces calls you, follow winding country roads to award-winning vineyards for wine tasting, or to grassy hilltops for a picnic overlooking the Pacific. Beautiful Hearst Castle is just 35-minutes away, and beyond that is the splendor of the Big Sur coastline.

San Luis Obispo's initials -- SLO -- precisely describes the speed a visitor should use in examining the area's treasures and pleasures. Go to fast and you'll miss of the off-the beaten path venues hidden back in the hills and canyons like the Pozo Saloon, See Canyon apple farms, Tibor Canyon organic olive oil Ranch or the charming town of Harmony, with a population of 15.

wonderful, special and immaculate

  • 5 of 5

As always, the cottage felt like our special place. We love to walk everywhere and there is so much beauty and peace in the area that we never get tired of returning. Pandora and Gary have taken care of every need and more and the cottage is immaculately kept. We love our annual visit.

Owner's Response: We love our return guests! They love the Green Cottage as much as we do. Once we get to know what they like: the kinds of foods they love, whether they are hikers or bikers, or art gallery visitors, we can make suggestions that might intrigue and entertain them. For the history buff, we have Hearst Castle of course, but we also have the Pozo Saloon where you can experience California as it was in the 1800s. It is also one of the finest and most authentic examples of how the west used to be. With its rustic, cozy interior and surrounding countryside, the Pozo Saloon continues to offer locals and the curious traveler the hospitality and frontier friendliness of a bygone day. Sundays they usually have live music and the food is great. Come see why so many of our guests return again and again.

Back again!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have been to Green Cottage many times over the years. This past summer we spent 3 weeks there, and now we find ourselves returning next week for yet another stay! The cottage has truly become our home-away-from-home. We are drawn there by the peace and tranquility of the bay, as well as the endless variety of things to do. We also love the many good restaurants in the central coast area. Green Cottage is really lovely inside and out, and the hosts furnish everything that one could want or need, providing a wonderful place to relax and unwind. Thank you, Pandora and Gary, for sharing your little peace of paradise!

Owner's Response: This couple is among our "Champion Guests", those who visit many times, and love the Green Cottage as much as we do. We love to hear how they look forward to their visits and how they see the Cottage as their coastal second home. We've gotten to know many of them, and we are delighted they have become friends too. I tell people that I want our guests to feel like they are staying in their favorite aunt's beach cottage, while she is away sailing somewhere exotic. The fictional aunt, has given them the keys to her cottage, and it's theirs while they stay -- art, antiques, books, movies, and all. The Cottage is NOT your typical vacation rental, it really is your "aunt's" home and you get to stay. Cool, eh! Come see why most of our guests are return visitors. The Cottage provides the ambience, peace, privacy, views, a great kitchen to prepare gourmet meals (or just a cup of coffee) and artiness that people are seeking.

Just be sure to set aside plenty of time to just sit and enjoy this cozy cottage and the beautiful views from the deck. We didn't want to leave. Thank you Pandora and Gary for sharing your home with us.

Owner's Response: We often hear from our guests that they wished they'd allowed more time to just be at the Cottage. So many times people come to our area for events or to visit their kids who attend Cal Poly. They stuff their schedules with things to do only to say later they didn't get enough time to just sit quietly and relax. When they re-book, the first thing they say is they will be staying close to the Cottage to just enjoy the views and listen to the water lap against the shore. Come, enjoy the quiet.

Restful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

I have visited The Green Cottage several times, and each time I return it's like coming home. It is the perfect place for solitude, rest, and reflection. I love strolling the nearby bird sanctuary on morning walks, and stopping at Back Bay Cafe in Baywood for fresh baked scones and coffee. The cottage is well situated to San Luis Obispo, Montano de Oro State Park, and Baywood Park (which has a lovely farmers market on Mondays). Comfortable, well appointed, and you can't beat the location!

Owner's Response: The Green Cottage resonates to special people. People looking for a peaceful, quiet, private spot, away from the madding crowds and busy-ness of daily life. It provides a great home-base for exploring the county, or exploring within. It has hosted famous photographers, writers, musicians and songwriters. Eric Tingstad credits the Cottage for providing the perfect environment for writing two new pieces of music (which are now on his latest CD). The writer of this review is a photographer and food writer and she claims the Cottage is the perfect spot for being creative. BUT, here is the disclaimer: IF you are easily distracted by the comings and goings of the tide, the shore birds hunting for food, the soft and sometimes vivid color of the land and the sky, and great views, then DO plan extra time just for "looking" between being creative.
