About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Fred's Shed has been a honeymoon destination for 30 years. This charming cottage has it all - central location in Historic Sconset and two minutes to the beach. Lie in bed in the morning and watch the sunrise over the ocean thru the oversized bedroom window. Relax outside in the small yard with its flower garden and climbing roses.

Step out of the yard and you are in Sconset center. Sconset has its own post office, a liquor store, 3 restaurants, 2 art galleries, a market and a lighthouse - Sankaty Light. It's famous for its rose covered cottages which have been the subject for artists for generations. Stroll the winding lanes and discover these charming little houses and their beautiful gardens.

Fred's Shed has a living room/dining area dominated by french doors that look out to sea. Walk thru the galley kitchen into the spacious Queen bedroom. Off of the kitchen is the bathroom with shower only (no tub).

Lounge in the sun, relax to the sound of the surf and know that you don't have far to go for anything.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Fred's Shed, with it's exquisite petite charm, in the sweet and winding 17th Century village of 'Sconset at the easternmost edge of Nantucket, on a low bluff providing a spectacular view of the ever-changing colors of ocean and sky which I watch through French doors opening the living room wall, offers me precious quietude and peace. At Fred's Shed, for going on eight years now, I experience my only true vacation from my frantic, demanded-upon everyday life. I wish the experience for everybody!

At Fred's Shed, with its exquisite petite charm in the sweet and winding 17th C village of 'Sconset at the easternmost edge of Nantucket, with spectacular views of the ever-changing ocean and sky which I watch through French doors opening the living room wall, we experience precious peace and quietude. For going on eight years vacationing there, we experience our only true vacation from a frantic, demanded-upon everyday life. In a chaise overlooking the ocean, I read local author Nathaniel Philbrick. My husband explores the island by bike, along its myriad paths through surprisingly diverse landscape. I fiddle; Fred's Shed neighbors have over the years listened to me improve (I hope). I needlepoint. I weave on my portable loom. In town, we roam the evocative Whaling Museum. I browse antique shops, the local fabric shop, Nantucket Weavers' studio. We shop for beautiful fresh foods and, back at Fred's Shed, we open-fire grill while sipping a local wine and listening to the crashing of waves. We treasure our time at Fred's Shed. I wish this experience for everybody!

perfect vacation cottage

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a charming, cozy, comfortable, peaceful ocean-facing spot in Sconset, this is your rental. Fred's Shed has everything you need to feel at home on vacation - comfortable, sun-lit living room with french doors looking out to the ocean and amazing sun/moon rises, complete kitchen (even though it's tiny) and quiet bedroom with king bed made with good linens. There's a washer/dryer, wifi, tv with cable. The cottage is steps away from Sconset center, on a quiet shell-lined foot path (no cars) - parking is always available in Sconset public parking, 50-75 steps away. Owner Karla is on-island and always available (though after several years of renting, I've never had a problem as a renter) - both owners are incredibly welcoming, kind and responsive - very much an added pleasure to renting this cottage. Fred's Shed is kept immaculately clean and upon arrival, fresh flowers are found in every room. Outside there is a small yard with table, chairs and umbrella and two lounge chairs - all in perfect condition and within earshot of the waves on the beach. The beach is a 5 minute walk out the door. Within steps from the cottage door, you can get a coffee or sandwich at Claudette's, shop at the Sconset Market and catch the island bus - very convenient for renters without a car. If you like to walk, the Cliff Walk along the Sconset Bluffs is right out the door and the Sankaty Head Lighthouse is 1.5 miles away. Restaurants within walking distance include Chanticleer and the Summer House. I can't speak more enthusiastically about a vacation rental - it is truly a special spot and place to find peace, comfort and vacation joy.
