Perfect place for watching Solar Eclipse!
The owners, Mr and Mrs McGraw, were really wonderful. They were very helpful and kind. We wanted a place for 3 couples and our 3 dogs to watch the Solar Eclipse and this home was in the path of Totality, and it had a fabulous large open area for viewing the eclipse, plus playing with dogs, walking, sitting, reading, etc. The property was private, and the house had 3 levels so each couple had their own "space". The grounds were just lovely. There is a beautiful stone bordered "pond" that was really much larger than the photos can show, plus a lovely little babbling creek along the border of the property which the dogs loved. The house had wonderful decks and there were gates to keep the dogs contained. We enjoyed our breakfasts and cocktails on the middle deck each day, and sitting out by the creek and pond was very special. The main "great room" was large enough for all of us to sit in, cook, have meals, read, chat, visit, etc. There are grills on the deck, plus another under a picnic shed. The beds were all comfortable and each couple had a private bathroom, which was great. The house is nicely furnished, and the beds were all comfortable. There were TV's in the great room and in the bedrooms, but, we didn't use them, except for the day before the eclipse to check the weather forecast! We enjoyed the peace and quiet of the property and having great conversations with each other. The house is about a 10 minute drive to the Appalachian Trail and we did go one day for a short hike. The road we took turns to gravel and is a bit rough, not suitable for sports cars, but, you can also access the trail a few minutes further on main roads at Dicks Creek Gap. (Warning...this time of year yellow jackets are aggressive and we found 4 nests on a short section of the trail....a couple of our party members were stung multiple times and we met other hikers who had tangled with the bees!) True everywhere on the trail this time of year-so just be careful if hiking until we get a good frost which will kill back the bees. Beautiful lake and the very nice town of Hiawassee is just 7 miles away. We didn't want to leave the property...so we had everything we needed and enjoyed our 3 night/4 day stay immensely! Thank you Jim and Dana for allowing us to stay at your beautiful property. We loved it!
Sandra, Dana and I loved your words of exactly what the Retreat is meant to be..a refreshing getaway and being hugged with the beautiful mountains and the lush green property all around you. The Retreat seemed perfect for y'all and everyone had a "getaway" and place for quiet read or nap. We truly appreciate your kindness and generosity in words for the spirit of the mountains and of getaways it provides for so many wonderful guests like you. We enjoy sharing a "little piece of heaven" with couples like you. Please return in the future and see the spring flowers and fall leaves. If it's not an inconvenience please send along pics of y'all and the doggies outside.
Our most sincere thanks to you all,
Jim & Dana McGraw
A cabin that has everything you need!
From the great communication with the owners, to everything this location provides....you can’t beat it!
The whole house was immaculate... kitchen was fully stocked, all cabinets clearly labeled, extra paper products provided, living room was roomy and cozy, dining room was a good size for 6-8 people, the bedrooms were very roomy with comfy beds and the best linens. The backyard was everything we could have asked for.... Picture perfect, lake/pool, a creek, fishing, firepit, room for lawn games and gorgeous trees. The cabin is in a great location, quiet and country with a town nearby for grocery and dining.
We’ve stayed at many cabins and this was by far the best!!! We will definitely be back!!!
Thank you for having us!
Thanks for your kind words and we are delighted that y’all had a memorable getaway.
Beautiful property, great owners!
I can't say enough about how gorgeous this property is! Our family had the best time in our week long stay. The kids, ages 15, 8 and 5 all enjoyed the swimming pond (great to cool off on those hot summer days), creek and wonderful lawn. Our dogs especially enjoyed free reign of the yard, creek and pond. Our border collie would chase the frisbee for hours, then just lay down in the creek to cool off, he was in heaven. The space inside is perfect, there are 3 levels so everyone has their own space. I had to put in a few hours of work on this trip, but the wifi was outstanding and travelled through the entire home and onto the porch. There is no cell service, but with the great wifi and the land line provided in the home, you don't miss it. Jim and Dana were outstanding to work with and answered all my questions almost immediately, they do things the right way. Everything was as advertised. Loved our stay at this retreat and will most definitely be back very soon!
How very kind of y'all to express your feelings and thoughts about the Retreat. Your words are important to us. We seek to provide our guests with family time never to be forgotten by the whole family. My wife (Dana) and I rejoice with the provision of services offered to our guests; many of you returning every year for a decade. We have established great relationships with our guests ; many exchanging photos and emails just to stay in touch.
Again, thanks just isn't enough for your kind words and reflections. My wish for your family is never ending memories and love felt among those beautiful mountains. I pray your children will remember this vacation for decades to come; sharing with your grandchildren the importance of families being united and enjoying your blessings provided only by God.
My sincere regards and thanks for your comments on the Retreat.

Great house and location
Very comfortable house. The three bedrooms were all essentially master bedrooms. Kitchen was a little small but workable. Fishing pond provided hours of entertainment. Owner was great to work with.
Late thanks for your input and insight into our
mountains..I appreciate your kind words.
Please visit us again..
Exactly what we wanted and More!
Our family (Parents, 2 adult sons and wives, grandchildren ages 5 to 11) typically select coastal locations for our annual destination vacation. This year we decided to try something different and looked for a mountain get away where the families ( from Michigan
& South Carolina ) could meet. We all have pretty intense, high stress careers and wanted to relax, unwind and enjoy nature. I studied the property, read the reviews and secured the reservation dates. Every interaction and communication with Jim was gracious, accommodating and pleasant.
We pulled up to the property, piled out and started having fun from the very first minute! It truly is absolutely lovely! Picturesque, well maintained, sweet sounds of the creek and tranquil peace.
We divied up the sleeping arrangements, took stock of the amenities, made a loooong grocery list and a couple of us traveled back to Ingles grocery store (which is close enough to visit daily - and we did 🙂) for the immediate needs. Nice store - nice staff .
We spent a day in Atlanta visiting the Aquarium and took in a Braves game. It's an easy 90 min drive and the Aquarium is well worth it!
The home is 3 stories (as depicted in the listing) and we appreciated that different sets of children and adults were able to go off and play or relax without being in each other's way - was perfect for us!
We spent days hiking the area, going for runs in the hills, playing horseshoes, building cairns in the creek, visiting the area waterfalls and lookouts and mostly watching the grandchildren running around the property. The rocking chairs along the beautiful expanse of the porch was my favorite spot! We would recommend this destination to anyone! To us it was a blessing to disconnect and find quiet relaxation as a family in a beautifully appointed home !
Jimi!! How very kind your words are to Dana and I.
We delight in the memories and family time you all shared; that will remain in
your family for decades and delight for the kids long after we're gone!!
Our overseer spoke highly of your family and hopefully he helped as needed.
We rejoice in your relaxation and fun together... Praying you all left with smiles
and appreciation for those magnificent mountains that you enjoyed from the porch with coffee or something?! Again, as I age, the memories and families like yours ; keeps me young and beautifully at peace with sharing the Retreat.
Please know how much we appreciate your trust and respect for this magnificent property and pray you'll have another time with us.
Kindest blessings and peace to you all!!
Jim & Dana McGraw
Jimi, we were so honored that many of you drove so far to enjoy our state and north Georgia mountains..YA'LL TAKE CARE...Ya hear!!
Peaceful and Relaxing Vacation....
Thank you Jim & Dana for sharing your mountain retreat with us! We had a very fun-filled and relaxing week. The grounds are beautiful and the house was large enough for us all to spread out. We travel to the Georgia mountains every year and always try out a new place. Hopefully my feedback will help fellow travelers as well as the owners......
1. Pond out front is great - kids enjoyed fishing and adults sat by the campfire. Creek is really nice - can be seen from front porch rocking chairs and was safe for kids to play in.
2. Great place for kids and large dogs.
3. 3 Bedrooms - one on each floor which was great for privacy. We had 2 families so it was perfect for us. They were also dark, so we all slept really well!
1. House is 3 stories - it was fine for us, but be prepared to climb multiple flights of stairs all day long. It is 2 stories from the kitchen down to the grassy area outside.
2. Playset outside is being repaired so is not in a safe condition to be played on.
3. House is desperately in need of routine maintenance: the dryer vent was completely clogged and we had to vacuum the whole line out to get it to work. The filter for the main water line going into the house looks like it has never been changed - it was covered with mold and completely black. Appliances need to be serviced - dryer knobs are broken, ice maker in the refrigerator doesn't work well, etc. Jim, I will send you a list of the smaller items.
4. House is in need of a deep cleaning - closets, drawers, kitchen cabinets. Although the house is stocked with many handy items, we found many were broken, missing parts or unusable and were digging through drawers trying to find pieces. Someone else's dirty laundry was in the laundry room...
5. House has beds for only 9 people. Not all 9 beds have linens and some are missing mattress pads. There is a crib mattress, but it has no sheets. There are also not enough pillows and blankets...I would suggest bringing all your own bedding.
6. Because of the items above, we feel the rental rates are too high.... we were charged extra per person over 8 people, (we had 10) but there were no beds for them?
7. The owner accepts only payments by check through the mail... so there is no protection for the renter. Not sure who was saving on the Home Away fees, but we didn't feel it was us...
Thanks again for having us... we enjoyed our time and wish you much success in the future with your Hiawassee retreat!

Sharon, firstly. I truly appreciate your feedback on our shortcomings and disappointments.
It will be acted on right away. Your list provides me and our cleaning staff with a challenge, but all our these issues will be quickly addressed.
I have copied our cleaning staff and talked with Chris Kennell our overseer; we've already taken your feedback and assigned staff to completely correct all of your issues
The 3 stories are noted in the description of the Retreat. We offer handicapped ramps and this should be the noted factor when guests are concerned about dealing with 3 floors.
.We repeatedly encourage our quest to discuss any of these concerns and many other issues via phone or email, or text; weeks prior to arrival, and we'd address each concern
... . most guests confer with us on any issues that concerns them before arrival.
We state on every form of contact with us, "please call us with any questions or concerning your stay." (This done from the beginning of the reservation process).
The walk down to the playground is evident from the photos provided and we repeatedly encourage guests to discuss any issues that may concern them prior to arrival.
If this issue was an impediment it should have been noted early on.
The playground was under repair due to a retarded 15 year old boy destroying the flooring of the playhouse; we began working on this the day they checked out. These things happen in life for anyone. So sorry for your disappointment. We spent over $ 5000.00
repairing this destroyed property; not charging our guest for the retarded child's actions even though he was unattended. An example of the cost to maintain a high end property.
Insurance wouldn't cover these damages.
On maintenance issues needing addressing; have already been put into motion. I would appreciate your complete list of these items noted.
All the issues regarding bedding also is underway and will be corrected However, see the factors below on accommodatingabove 7 guests.
On the extra guest charges, again, we note the limitations to 7-8 persons; we asked for our guests going above that number to coordinate with us. The additional guest generate demands on air conditioning or heating, cleaning up after the additional guest leaves, liability insurance, etc. Most guests discuss the bedding limitations that impacted your party. Those guests bring sleeping bags or use the provide
