This rambling farmhouse has a balanced mix of meticulous restoration with an eccentric flair. Undermountain Farm is a home carefully designed with warmth and spirit. It also has a unique collection of fascinating antiques and collectibles.
Enjoy cooking in the state-of-the-art kitchen with your only dilemma being where to eat. You might choose the solarium, surrounded by exotic plants and the sun streaming through the glass; or the patio where you might hear the roar of the waterfall which tumbles down the mountain behind the house after a rainfall, or you could try the formal dining room which still has the original Dutch oven from the 18th century. The veranda is a good choice where you can watch the highland cattle in the meadows. Or you may choose the informal dining area and eat in the luminous kitchen delicately accented with orchids. The hand-crafted cabinetry in the kitchen was all made from one maple tree.We recently had a large dinner party for forty people in the breakfast sitting room after we removed the couch and chairs.Tis was the very max I would like to say .With all the downstairs rooms we were able to have hor dourves in the dinning room , a bar in the green house and dancing complete with a disco ball in the stable
This farmhouse has many rooms to enjoy. If you like a large space, then the former stables might suit you. This room, with its high vaulted ceilings and original beams boasts a magnificent stone fireplace, and huge windows that offer a pastoral view of the surrounding meadows. If you prefer a cosy room, then the den is ideal. The antique wood paneling, the big comfy leather chairs and the soothing, ambient feeling will make you want to curl up with a good book in front of the wood stove and forget about the outside world.
You might choose the formal living room or the informal living area adjoining the kitchen for a friendly gathering place. This home has six fireplaces and two wood stoves to keep you warm, and there’s also a fire cauldron and grill on the patio.
If you’re staying with friends, you might have to draw straws for the huge master bedroom, where the rising sun illuminates the artfully plastered walls creating a deep orange, radiant light in the morning. The added bonus in the master bathroom with the shower and its floor of river stones and the jacuzzi where you can gaze over the meadows.
Those who drew the shorter straws will be happy in the other three bedrooms which have lovely outlooks over the Berkshire Hills and offer a quiet respite for a restful sleep; including the soothing sounds of a seasonal babbling brook.
Upstairs two bedrooms with a shared bathroom. Master bedroom with a dressing room, shower and jacuzzi from where you can watch the cows! Six fireplaces and two wood stoves. Fire cauldron and grill on the patio.
Four bedrooms with queen beds, several other bedding options, two fold out sofas, futons and an air mattress.
Check out our English Shepherd Hut which sleeps two in the orchard .
Hiking and cross country skiing right from the back door. Nature Conservancy land abuts the house, with the Appalachian trail up at the top of the ridge next to Bear rock falls behind the house !

Saving American history for the future!
Robin (AKA Basil) or Sally (Sometimes called Sybil!) purchased this house in 1999
I bought this property so as to save and restore this American beauty that had served her builders for over 150 years as their family home .
Untouched beauty surrounds this old house, experience life as a settler in the New world, living in the present ! Check out our new Shepherd Hut located in the orchard .
Well I was disappointed and surprised to find this less than five star review from this party as all of my others are so good. These retired school teachers did not have any negative comments when I spent time with them on a couple occasion to make sure that everything was in order .My assistant does live in the barns so as to facilitate any question or resolve any situations that may arise sometimes and provide on site security .
I would also point out that we were in the process of painting the house and completing some carpentry repairs that were required to keep this 200 year old lady in good shape. Had they bought any of their points to my attention at the time they were staying in my house we would have dealt with them promptly as you can see if you read in all of the reviews. I guess should have bought an apple !
Thanks Robin .
Everyone in the family was delighted with our stay and Thanksgiving celebration at Undermountain Farm. The house has been renovated and maintained with care and some whimsy. Robin takes advantage of the history of the house and his own creative design-sense to create a number of inviting spaces to relax and congregate. The kitchen is large, with an easy to use wood burning stove (and plenty of wood). There are several eating areas, so we easily fit the 20 or so Thanksgiving guests. The dining room has a beautiful wood carved table, candle chandeliers and large colonial fire place. The master bedroom is expansive, with lots of light and windows looking out over the farm. The master bath has a luxuriously-sized shower and tub. The other bedrooms and bathrooms were well -equipped and comfortable. We were able to open a large sofa bed in one of the living rooms for the teenagers. All in all, lots of amenities and a wonderful feel to the house. Outside, Robin keeps cattle and a goat, which we enjoyed. While the property is on a main road, there is not a lot of traffic and it is peaceful and bucolic. Robin was easy to communicate with and responsive. Highly recommended!
Our group consisted of 3 baby boomer families along with their millennial children. We were very comfortable in this house that had many areas for people to spread out in and relax. The kitchen and the dining room were perfect for our group meals. The living room with the piano and large fireplace were great spaces for everyone to hang out. There were several other spaces that people took advantage of to read and meditate in. Many from our party enjoyed spending breakfast in front of the kitchen window and watching and identifying the numerous birds that appeared at the feeders. The hiking trails behind the farmhouse provided good hiking for fun group adventures. It would have been nice to ski them if we had just a little bit more snow. The cows in the front and side fields provided entertainment for all. The linens were very nice - soft clean sheets and thick, luxurious bath towels! The only awkward situation was the refrigerator which contained Robin's (owner) food. Also we would have liked to have had some shelves to put our non-perishable food. All in all a very fun stay at a very comfortable farmhouse. Hopefully you will get a chance to spend some time with Robin as he is quite entertaining.
My wife and I with our children were getting together for a long weekend with some friends and family in the Berkshires. One of my friends that lives in the area arranged to get the house for us. My parents, two of my uncles and one of my aunts traveled up for one of the nights and the house accommodated us perfectly. Four bedrooms with comfortable beds and plenty of space to sit down at a table and all have meals together. Robin, the owner of the house stopped by to say hi and he couldn't have been nicer. As it turned out, Robin had renovated this farmhouse himself and what an impressive job he did. All the cabinetry was custom made from trees cut from the property, the furniture, the fireplaces,...... the list goes on. It's really a beautifully renovated Berkshire farm house that is comfortable and loaded with character.
Our group consisted of seven adults and one infant. The house had four bedrooms (three up) and three bathrooms which comfortably accommodated our group. It is an updated old farmhouse with far more common rooms than we took advantage of, including a nicely appointed and spacious kitchen, several dining areas, several living areas and at least two outside sitting areas. One problem we encountered was that the house gets very hot, especially the upstairs and south facing rooms. Robin brought in all the fans he could muster, but parts of the house were not usable during the warmest parts of the day - it did cool off at night, however. The other negative is that this is Robin's primary residence, and it felt like we were staying in someone else's house. These reservations did not detract from our stay, however. We are an easy drive from several towns with good shopping as well as many hiking trails. Robin was an excellent host.
Overall, we highly recommend Undermountain Farm and would return if the opportunity presents itself.
We had 4 couples rent this property for two nights for my husband's 40th birthday party. We had a great time and loved the accommodations! Every guest remarked on what a comfortable bed they had to sleep in. There was just so much room and space to move around. I think our favorite place was the front porch which provided privacy and shade from the sun but made us feel like we were living in a time where life was lived on the front porch of a home. We also enjoyed the beautiful backyard during the day for cornhole and ultimate frisbee. It was such beautiful land with cattle grazing - we loved it! The back porch is where we ate dinner and relaxed. The kitchen was amazing and had everything you could need. The house had a great warmth and energy and we felt right at home. There was so much space we could have easily had more couples/friends. We loved the privacy and were so pleased with our stay. Highly recommended! No issues at all!
Our family spent three nights at Undermountain Farm over July 4th weekend for our annual family gathering. With nine adults and four grandchildren there was plenty of room for everyone - lots of space for the kids to run around outside, and inside for parents to get far enough away from the kids to take a nap! Robin was welcoming and friendly, quickly getting the cows to come up to the fence for our four-year-old granddaughter to see. He made himself available by phone to help with some technology issues. Robin offers his beautiful home in a relaxed and inviting way, making it easy to settle in and enjoy the time there. We left only for a hike to the waterfall, a trip into Great Barrington and some rock-skipping on the Green River. The kitchen is a chef's dream and lacks nothing in terms of equipment. We enjoyed cooking all our meals and eating on the beautiful porch out back. We're all looking forward to returning to this beautiful, welcoming place that Robin has so thoughtfully provided.
