Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

20 feet from the water, this cozy, quiet waterfront getaway on Mobile Bay in Fairhope, Alabama is a perfect place for writing, painting, or just hanging around on the wharf catching Blue Crabs. The town of Fairhope is a quaint bay-front village that began in the 19th century as an artists colony, and it still retains much of this feel, couched in a Deep-South warmth.

The center of town has many quaint shops that add to this charm and evoke a feeling of stepping back in time. The house itself invites you to sit and rock, watch the pelicans, herons, and gulls fly overhead, and boil some of those crabs you catch on the pier.

For those who can tear themselves away from the boiling of seafood and the clink of ice in the glass, the Gulf of Mexico is but a short drive away. Have a good time, and remember: This is the home of 'Forrest Gump', 'Cheeseburgers in Paradise' (found at Pirate's Cove), 'Margaritaville', and in nearby Mobile, the original Mardi Gras!

GREAT WAYS TO ENJOY THE HOUSE

Brush your teeth on the deck by the light of the full moon;

Sleep out on the pier at least once if you can;

Turn off the ac/heat and open all of the windows when there is a breeze so that you can hear the sound of the water washing up on the rocks;

Count the number of pelicans that pass over the house in the afternoon;

Don’t miss a sunset;

Read more; watch TV less;

Serve drinks or dinner on the pier;

Look for porpoises chasing shrimp up and down the bay. When they are active you can see them 100-200 ft. off the end of the long piers;

Meet the neighbors; they are very nice;

Use the deck shower as often as you can;

Act out one of Shakespeare’s plays (there is a full set on the bookshelf);

As the kitchen is well equipped, learn how to make Creole Seafood Gumbo or West Indies Salad with the crabs that you catch (e-mail me for a recipe if you like).

About The Owner

I: From Mobile/School at McGill and Spring Hill/Then to D.C./Background in International Relations/Wine Consultant/Love Fairhope, New Orleans, New York, and Hawaii/Love to Cook.

My Wife: From France/International Marketer/Family of Winemakers and Engineers/Love Fairhope, The Pyrenees Mountains, New Orleans, and Chicago/Love to Bake.

Why The Owner chose Alabama Gulf Coast

Fairhope is a diamond in the rough! An artists' colony that doubles as a retirement community; a fun town that can be quiet; a village that is both civilized and laid back is hard to find indeed!

It is not only the proximity of our house to the beautiful body of water that is Mobile Bay that drew us to it, but also the pace and gentile nature of the town of Fairhope itself that makes this a genuinely special place in this country.

What makes this house unique

This is the closest house on the Eastern Shore to the water; only twenty feet! This makes the panoramic views fantastic, and your neighbors houses are built so far back that you don't even know they are there. Water views from every room are a great perk, and bay breezes through the windows are a treat! In addition, we own the lot next door, and our lots are among the deepest on this part of the bay, so there is a lot of room for children to play or to let your dogs run around.

Have we mentioned that we have the most well-equipped kitchen you will ever find in a vacation house?

Just read the reviews to see what we mean!

Great Home, Great View, Great Experience

  • 5 of 5

Stayed for a week at the Bay Cottage. Home is very well laid out with plenty of room both in and out of the home. Wrap around deck was fantastic, both at dawn and dusk. Being right on the water was fantastic, listening to the waves through the windows. Kitchen was well stocked with anything you would need. Owner was courteous and highly communicative. Highly recommend staying.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much, sir! I wish you could have stayed longer, and it sounds like you do too. That is what I like to hear from people, and I certainly continue to try to make that happen. Thank you again.

Blue Crab Heaven

  • 5 of 5

This is a very well equipped 2 bedroom cottage. Feels bigger than it is. Kitchen is well stock with dishes, utensils and supplies like aluminum foil, storage bags, etc... Owner of this property is very responsive with any issues or questions.

He has 2 crab traps you can use if you like. We caught about 3 dozen crabs for the week. They also have plenty of chairs to use on the dock.

Highly recommend this place, would stay here again.

Great location for a rustic, peaceful getaway and catching crabs.

  • 4 of 5

We stayed 3 nights at this home away from home. It was very convenient verses a condo or town home setting because they supplied plenty of basic needs that you would usually end up buying and the lugging leftovers back home. For example we didn't have to buy toilet paper, paper towels, dish soap or dishwashing detergent. Laundry soap and fabric softener sheets were there. Even good trash sacks that stayed up on the trash and didn't tear when you tried to take the trash out. We caught a couple small shrimp and small bait fish to use for crabbing in the provided traps. We caught 15 medium sized crabs, boiled them and learned how to clean them and make crab cakes! It was a very new experience. Cleaning crabs is gross but what a memory we made!!!

The downtown area of Fairhope is cute and some of the shop owners are so friendly and even gave my daughter small freebies! The Mayhem jelly at Put some South in Your Mouth is so yummy with cream cheese and crackers.

We fished at Weeks Bay nearby because this house has a shorter dock with railings and a roof. Plenty of room to cast from shore or bobber fish but not good for casting from the dock itself. Weeks Bay is not real pretty as the water is real brown and murky, but we caught some long finned catfish and Mullet.

The house was clean, well stocked and the community nication was very thorough and organized. If I have one thing to say needs improvement it would be the master bed mattress. Even a nice fluffy mattress topper would help. The mattress was pretty hard.

Otherwise we really enjoyed it. Loved the back deck!

Owner's Response: Hi, Thank you for your review, and for staying at our place. I would like to address a couple of points here though. We do have gel mattress toppers for each bed, and they can be put on at any time. My family and I are at the house right now, and, when we leave, we are going to put them on for the next guests. The beds without the toppers are firm, and consequently good for those who have bad backs, or need a firm mattress in general. Folks have a choice. Regarding the shorter pier, all the fish are up close anyway, particularly because I have put rocks in front of the bulkhead. This creates a little environment for small creatures which attract fish. One does not need a long pier, in other words. Water is shallow here anyway, even if you go out 500 feet. Naturally, I have a roof over the pier gazebo (to protect against sun and rain), and a railing (to keep folks from falling in). Naturally there is a little ladder stair if one wants to get in the water, go kayaking, or what have you. I also happen to have power, lights, running water, a sink, and an L-shaped bar on the pier, where you can serve food, drinks, or cut fish. I have built-in benches too. That said, because the house is only 24 feet from the water, you don't have to even leave the porches (one covered, and one open) to feel like you are right over the water. The rocking chairs will keep you sitting up on the deck all day, with panoramic views of the pier, bay, pelicans, gulls, dolphins, and so on. Not sure why you bring up Weeks Bay, which is four miles down the road from us, but, since you mention it, is only murky when there are storms that stir everything up. Mobile Bay, the body of water on which we sit, varies as well. Just depends on the weather. Today that weather is beautiful, it turns out.

Perfect vacation rental

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for our family of 4 to get away from it all! The quiet, peaceful nights sitting on the porch listening to the water, we feel rejuvenated. There wasn't anything they left out in this home to settle right in and be comfortable. Location is perfect to travel to beaches, museums, and shopping without being in the center of all the traffic and the noise. My family enjoyed every minute here.

Great property and owner!

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at 'a nouste' and it was great. It was the perfect size for my family of 4. It had everything you could possibly need for a vacation- plenty of towels, plates, pans, and even beach chairs and a cooler. We did use the crab traps- didn't catch enough to eat but our kids loved it. The sunsets are as amazing as promised. It was nice to come back to a quiet place after a busy day at the beach and just relax.

The owners are great! They gave great suggestions for just about everything I requested. They were attentive to the one issue we had (only one working flash light during a power outage) and it was taken care of immediately. They gave a welcome text, Check in text and a departure text. I thought they were great!

This house is in fairhope and about 30-40 mins from gulf shores beach. We didn't mind the drive but just be aware of this when you book. We ended up at the beach daily and didn't mind a bit driving back. Take a day and explore fairhope. Great little downtown area! It's closes up pretty early so I suggest grabbing lunch and walking around on a non beach day.
