About Betsy Smith

I am a ceramic artist who lives in Philadelphia. I have three grown children and a part time dog.

Betsy Smith purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Betsy Smith chose Cape Cod

I bought the cottage after renting it for 11 summers with my children. I wanted to continue using it as my summer home and thought it might not be available to me if it was sold. The cottage was built in the late 1890's and has only been changed in minor ways to increase comfort, without effecting the authentic feel of an original beach cottage with a world class view and natural environment. It is a rare and lovely place to my family and we couldn't imagine life without it.

What makes this cottage unique

I fist saw the cottage on a dark night in 1989, when I was planning a family beach vacation. I couldn't really see the view or much of the surroundings, but I saw enough to know it was something rare. A setting that would provide an authentic Cape Cod beach vacation.......a place that would encourage us to live more simply and be immersed in this exquisite Bay environment. A ' no shoes needed ' kind of place where Nature displays her best or shine.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Here I am, in the most lovely, charming, idillic cottage I ever knew.

It is very strange now, I can breathe, just breathe. I cannot hear the city call, just the nature call, stay and relax. Noe has the same feelings, we really love your cottage, it is like a "refuge".

Idyllic Cottage

  • 5 of 5

My stay at the cottage could not have been lovelier. This is by far the most special and picturesque place to stay on the Cape. The cottage itself provides a wonderful space to cook, read, and relax, always with the peaceful sense you're not far from the ocean. The view from the porch is extraordinary and the access to the beach makes you feel like it's your own. All these things will keep me coming back for as long as possible. Not to mention I'll be dreaming about it all year.

Lovely From Sunset to Sundown

  • 5 of 5

I have been to the cottage 3 times and my last adventure was in June of 2014. As you enter Truro, off of Highway 6 , the smell of pines and the return to nature leads you up the hill to the car park and then their is a brief walk to the top of the dune. The cottages are on the dune and when one leaves the cottage you are in the sand, and surrounded by indigenous grasses, flowering bushes and a vista of the bay which magazines have used for their summer New England issues. The cottage is quaint and authentically maintained with Betsy's beautiful artistic touches throughout particularly in the well equipped kitchen where one can eat from one of a kind pottery pieces. These pieces make the preparing of and eating of meals celebratory.

I loved to meet the morning on her porch with my coffee and then walk the stairs down to the bay beach and walk for hours toward Provincetown. There were mornings where I alone enjoyed the beach and then times where a few fellow walkers and their dogs would smile on by. Corn Hill was a warm and friendly place yet also people were very respectful of people's privacy. This cottage is a very special place because it has a sophisticated yet rustic atmosphere which comes from it's well thought out simple interior and it's position with simply the most beautiful sunsets in Cape Cod.

Should you decide to leave the cottage or the beach - The Black Fish restaurant is a super place for fine dining in jeans and flip flops or a hamburger at the bar. Don't miss the French bakery and the new coffee house with artisan pour over coffee and hand made chocolate.

Sublime .....

  • 5 of 5

There are vacations ..... and then there are vacations! Cottage #8 on Corn Hill Beach surpasses any cottage on the Bayside. I am a Cardiac nurse that works a grueling schedule and to get away from all the stress to Betsy's cottage was really sublime. The cottage has a well equipped kitchen with everything you need! The decor is cozy with the nostalgic warmth of my early visits growing up summering on the Cape. The living room is cozy and very comfortable. The beds are devine after a day of all that fresh air and sunshine .... and I promise you, you will sleep well! There are two televisions (yup never missed a football game!) The wifi was superb. And the very BEST .... the porch and the deck out front? Sunsets to make your toes curl! What better way to enjoy for your first cup of coffee on the porch and hear the surf? I spent many many summers on the Cape but no beach on the bayside is better than the one this cottage is nestled over! I have STUNNING pictures from the sights from the porch and the deck that I will share here, or you may see on my review on TripAdvisor. I have had dozens of friends ask where I stayed after they saw all my photos. This is the place to go for a getaway of all getaways!

Idyllic Corn Hill Cottage on Cape Cod Bay

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we entered this lovely rustic cottage, we felt at home. Not only was its Truro location ideal and idyllic, the interior was cozy, open, streamlined and well-appointed. The kitchen provided everything needed for comfort and sophisticated baking/cooking (toaster oven, waffle iron, french press, coffee maker, assorted seafood steamers, cake pans, pots, pans, serving dishes, cooking utensils). Using Betsy's exquisite pottery serving dishes and mugs made dining at home feel both elegant and homey. I miss my morning mug of tea by the bay! Betsy also provided a little cooler for bringing snacks and beverages to the beach. Beach chairs were also provided. Our young daughters enjoyed the independence afforded by the beach and Pamut River's proximity. While neighboring cottages are physically close, we rarely heard other visitors during our stay. After sunset, cottage guests are quiet, which is helpful with younger children. The property was clean and well-maintained, Betsy provided quick answers to our questions as well as plenty of Cape Cod travel guides, and I have already recommended this cottage to friends. We look forward to our next summer's visit.

*Monday morning's Truro Farmer's market is a great place to find a variety of local foods ranging from lobster to ice cream to chai to veggies to wine.

an artful blend of old cape cod and old soul

  • 5 of 5

What an evocative place. How wonderfully well Betsy has thought out every detail of what a visitor to the Cape might want to experience. I'm an amateur chef and I loved cooking in this kitchen. Betsy's beautiful, rustic plates and mugs combine with high end, quality cookware. The cottage is functional and comfortable, yet also spoke to my artistic sensibilities through its simple and beautiful decorative touches. Even the sounds of this cottage brought me happy feelings; the slap of the screen door, the creak of the stairs. The porch was a blissful experience; we sat there in the mornings drinking coffee and reading, and were treated to beautiful sunsets in the evening. We left grateful and refreshed, and we hope to return every year.

Review of Corn Hill Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our week at Corn Hill was for me, the perfect way to get re-aquainted with our little family. Sitting in the front room or porch we had a sweeping view of Cape Cod Bay over the dune grass out front, and the cottage itself is the perfect combination of rustic and comfort. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen is well equipped, and the ambience warm and inviting. The owner couldn't have been more helpful and accessable; it is clear from the management and maintenance of the property that she wants her guests to enjoy their experience.

Truro is a town of unspoiled natural beauty near the tip of Cape Cod. There are dramatic sand dunes along the bay and ocean beaches.'The National Sea Shore' has preserved more than 2/3 of Truro's land which keeps the town from developing commercially and allows it to retain the same look it had for the last 100 years. The cottage is located on top of a naturally landscaped sandy dune, which provides everything you need for a fabulous vacation. Beautiful sunsets, private beach, hiking, clamming, low tide walks, fires on the beach, seal and whale sightings and is naturally peaceful.

Other Activities: Dune walks, Kayaking, galleries
