Overview

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 8-10)

My grandmother convinced my father to buy the house in 1964 from an old girlfriend who was trying to raise money to get her manuscripts published. The "ex"? She wrote the NY Times bestseller "Charleston" and went on to be selected by Margaret Mitchell's heirs to write the sequel to "Gone With the Wind"! We have pictures of the house and beach at different periods of our family's involvement. Everyone who enters breathes a sigh of relaxation because of the beautiful views and open layout that invites the constant breeze and sea air. We have retained all of the charming and necessary features for full beach enjoyment such as a large porch looking out over the ocean with a comfortable sofa and chairs, a porch dining table with six chairs and room for more, and a hard to resist hammock. In addition, we have provided modern amenities such as Keurig cofee/cocoa/tea maker, wireless internet, Dish Satellite, Flat Screen TVs and DVD players. There are two additional televisions with DVD players in two bedrooms. Of course there is central heating and air.

Our favorite spots are the swing on the beach side, the lounge chairs on the deck that face the beach, and the dune deck that allows you to perch above the rest of the beach goers and watch the surfers and ships. The full kitchen with gas stove, gas grill, and dining room make it so you never have to leave this great spot to eat. However, there are fabulous restaurants on the Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island and downtown. It is a five-minute drive to Target and Towne Center, where there are boutiques, a movie theater, a Lowes, and a department store. There are dozens of highly rated golf courses within a 20-mile radius. All of the bedrooms have ceiling fans, blinds, functioning windows and screens to allow for the refreshing sea breeze. The HVAC is brand new. The master bedroom has a king-sized bed, charming tile bathroom, two closets, and t.v. and DVD player. The other two bedrooms on the main floor, twin and queen, have built-in dressers and full closets, and share a bathroom with shower and tub. The first floor bedroom has twin beds, its own bathroom, and two showers adjacent to it. Downstairs is another den with TV and a futon/bunk bed perfect hang out for teens!

About Devon Hanahan

This is a family house. We enjoy it with children and cousins of multiple ages, and there is something for everyone. We live in Charleston and use the house when we can, so it is kept in prime condition and we have rented the house for more than 40 years, so we know what needs to be done to create a positive experience for renters. We are in the process of passing the house to our sons for estate planning purposes and to continue the tradition, thereby preserving the house for the family for a third generation, and more, we hope!

Devon Hanahan purchased this house in 1964

Why Devon Hanahan chose Charleston Area

The Isle of Palms is a safe, welcoming, and supportive community. You can walk to the grocery store, post office, restaurants, ice cream, and seafood store. The playground is in walking distance and has tennis courts, a basketball court, gym, soccer, football, and baseball fields. The public park with lifeguards is within sight of our house.

What makes this house unique

We are located in between two of the public access paths, so we are away from the crowds! This is the best surfing area on the beach- the best break is just the to the left of our dune path. We have a full beach and do not experience erosion problems since we are in the middle of the island. We love to look for loggerhead turtle nests and have witnessed both the laying and hatching of eggs and do a lot of running and biking on the beach and on the bike path on the marsh side of the island. All of our friends (even the ones who live here on the Island!) love to come to this house to go to the beach!

What a memorable week!

  • 5 of 5

Our family get-together was wonderful and relaxing in this charming house. The pictures don't tell the whole story--the furniture is lovely, the kitchen is well stocked, the house was very clean and well maintained, and the location is perfect. Beach access is easy, and the dune deck is a great place to sit above the activity and watch people from your own private perch. We enjoyed being able to see the big cargo ships and cruise liners going by without even leaving the screen porch. The owners are terrific communicators who obviously care about their renters being satisfied. We will be back!

Beware

  • 2 of 5

Downstairs is not a conditioned space, but one bedroom downstairs has a window unit. The downstairs smells of mold and mildew due to the low light, humidity, and stagnant air. This is caused by being open to the wet outdoor conditions. Upstairs needs a good cleaning and organizing. The porch is nice and the location is nice. Luckily it was a bunch of guys who stayed with me that weekend because the girls would not have slept there. The water heater is not large enough to provide hot water to multiple showers running at once, so time out your showers before going out to dinner wisely. I would recommend bringing your own sheets, towels, pillows, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies. I wouldn't recommend anyone sleeping downstairs due to the mold and mildew. Also we could not find the corn hole game anywhere. The horse shoes were two rebar poles stuck in the ground and only managed to find one VERY rusty horse shoe and one blue horse shoe.

An older home, quaint like something out of a Nicholas Sparks book.

  • 4 of 5

Super location and had everything you need. Loved the back porch and the deck was awesome. The back yard and the walk to the beach is nice. The 3 bedrooms upstairs are big and had good beds. (1 queen bed, 1 king bed and 2 twins). The den upstairs had a daybed in it also. Could use new shower liners in bathrooms.

Owner's Response: Thanks for feedback! Next week is my "stay at the house and refurbish it week", so I will be sure to include the shower liners. :-)

HIGHLY RECOMENDED!!

  • 5 of 5

Spent a long weekend there with our four adult children and their significant others (10 total). I was a little worried after reading the two bad reviews but after reading the owners response I decided to give it a try. Boy am I glad I did. What an excellent place to spend a weekend with family. There was plenty of room for everyone and being older home it felt like it just welcomed us in. There is plenty of off street parking and it's a short walk to the water. Grilled out on the deck, played horseshoes and corn hole in the front yard.

We will be back!!!
