Let the ocean lull you to sleep under a canopy of stars - The ideal get-away for the creative artist or writer – just steps away from Cooks Beach. A simply spectacular house designed by Ralph Matheson with a view from every room.
This two-bedroom, two-bath, home has floor-to-ceiling, glass cornered windows that bring white-water views of the ocean, Cook’s Beach and The Fishrocks into every room. An arched skylight the entire length of the structure fills the home with light and gives new meaning to sleeping under the stars (and the moon) at night.
The master suite offers a full bath and dressing room with walk-in closet and glass block shower. The kitchen features a large breakfast bar, gas-stove, all built-in appliances and imported German cabinets. It opens out to the dining and living rooms allowing for an ideal open entertainment area featuring custom Italian designed furniture. Radiant floor heating provides the ultimate in comfort. A wood-burning fireplace in the sunken living room and a wood-burning stove in the master bedroom provide ambiance and warmth for the cool nights on the coast. A full guest bedroom suite with full-bath on the second level provides personal privacy away from the main floor. The detached office/studio/game room allows space and privacy away from the living quarters while over-looking the ocean and open space. A 2-person hot-tub tucked in a cozy corner of the deck provides an ideal way to watch the moon rise and finish out a day of creative writing, sculpting or painting. A full double garage, enclosed decks and entry complete the package.

We fell in love with California's northern coastline and Shiosai the moment we saw it - it has been our dream house providing us a zen-like escape! We are busy Silicon Valley executives and this is how we rejuvenate ourselves when we are able to get away to Shiosai. We do love to share our special place and enjoy hearing back from our guests and what they take away from it - welcome!
Fred purchased this house in 2003
Gualala means 'where the river meets the ocean' = an American Indian name. An old logging town, and 2 miles from Sea Ranch, Gualala offers the wonders of nature (whale watching, deer, foxes, osprey, vulture buzzards, bobcats) together with other sporting fun (golf, river kayaking, surfing). It is an artist enclave with some very special restaurants (St. Orrs). The friendly and creative residents of Gualala complete the picture. There is nothing more one could ask for!
An unobstructed white-water view of the Pacific ocean and Cook's beach. Spectacular sunsets. Osprey flying over the house with their daily catch. Spouting whales in the distance. A deer with her babies. A mesmerizing full moon over the water. Millions of stars right over your bed lighting up the night through the barrel skylight which runs through the full length of the home. What one of our guests said 'what every couple in love should experience. . . .'
. . . . .My hat's off to the architect who included seven see-through glass corners in this structure. I enjoyed the views through each one this weekend.
My wife and I found this special place to stay when we got engaged. For our wedding night, it was obvious that we'd return here. The pictures don't do the magical views justice. A fireplace in every major space, soft carpeting for lounging on, a skylight that runs from one end of the home to the other, and spectacular views in every direction. Shiosai has a special place in our heart.
I take quite a few get away weekends and love exploring new places. This home blew me away, from the unparalleled views as walked into the home, that stretched into each room as if it were woven into a beautiful tapestry. The architecture brings incorporates the outside, the ocean, the coastline seamlessly into one. The owners obviously are sharing their beautiful home with others, so they to, can experience the joy the must feel when they for a respite from the dizzying world around us. The home is truly a sanctuary. I love to watch soaring birds, the ocean breezes hit the cliff line in front of the house creating an spectacular updraft that birds seem to ride like an ocean wave, hours of enjoyment. This is what I simply call, a 'spot' , Shiosai.
What a perfect escape. We spent 4 days in this wonderful home and enjoyed every minute. The house itself is very clean and comfortable, and the views are of course spectacular from every room on the main floor. Even after getting used to the home we'd stop mid-step from time to time, look out the very large windows and just take it all in again. Add to this a wonderful, large deck and a clean, inviting hot tub and the whole experience is perfect. Just what we needed as a getaway from our busy daily lives. There is a wonderful beach just below the house. Make sure to time the waves and explore the second cove just to the south as well. As noted in other reviews the owners were very easy to deal with and all was just as promised. We have already shared the link to this page with many of our friends. This home is a true find.
This home is truly lovely. We spent the first day relaxing in front of the floor to ceiling windows overlooking the sea. When we needed something different, we just went to another room and sat in front of other floor to ceiling windows... The view is amazing and the house makes the most of it - this is one of those rare homes that somehow feel peaceful and invigorating at the same time.
The kitchen, amenities, etc, were great. We needed nothing more. And keep your eyes peeled for wildlife - we watched two fawns in the back yard, saw an osprey looking for a fish dinner, and had a great time poking around on the beach. We will certainly be back.
My friends and I stayed at your amazing place awhile back and I can't say enough wonderful things about such a lovely and well stocked home. In my 16 years of renting homes in the Sea Ranch area yours was the best! Your place is designed for those who like to cook and love to watch the sunset simultaneously. It has all the necessary cooking implements, wine glasses, spices plus good napkins and placements! The beds were yummy and the view from any room, grand. I really loved the "skylight" that went from the kitchen all through the house into the master bedroom. You could see the stars and listen to the rain!! Fred was pleasant and helpful with the arrangements as I am computer illiterate. I have already shared this gem with many of my friends and I plan to return. Only wished I could bring my ten pound Cockapoo dog, Kaydee. Thank you both.
Great home! Beautifully appointed rooms, comfortable but very elegant. Views from every room (the pictures are TRUE!) The owners are very easy to deal with, and have well maintained the property. Everything worked as promised, including the hot tub on the deck, jetted tub in master bath, laundry facilities, and kitchen appliances. We have already recommended to friends, and will check availibility first when returning to the area.
Our home, while privately situated, is located conveniently between the little towns of Gualala and Anchor Bay. Both towns have grocery stores stocked with standard and high-end goods, as well as multiple restaurant options, with St. Orres a 5 minute walk away. There is a gym in Gualala. The Robert Muir Graves links style Sea Ranch golf course is 15 minutes drive away from the house as is the public Sea Ranch coastal trail.
