About John Schisler

I'm John Schisler, the owner of Tranquility Cottage. I have loved this area ever since I attended the Outward Bound School at Table Rock. My wife Ginny and I have always enjoyed hiking this area and find our time here very relaxing. My Uncle Clifford purchased this property when he was sent to the old Banner Elk hospital after dental school. His wife, Peggy, an avid naturalist, was the inspiration that established this farm as a conservation easement. With all the development in the area, we wanted the farmland to remind people of what this area used to be. We hope you appreciate our vision, and capture the feeling.

John Schisler purchased this cottage in 2009

Why John Schisler chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

When Dan Plyler built this home, we thought he had achieved the perfect cottage. It complemented the conservation easement surrounding this cottage, and we wanted to have an income to preserve the feeling of the area and protect it from becoming densely developed. The house focuses the attention on the incredible views of Grandfather and Sugar Mountain. It is also easy to access by road and still provides a sense of privacy and solitude.

The best honeymoon getaway ever

  • 5 of 5

Tranquility Cottage was absolutely amazing! My new wife and I spent our honeymoon there, and we couldn't have asked for a better place to get away. The location was close enough to Banner Elk to be easily accessible and convenient to nearby restaurants and attractions, yet isolated enough to feel like a quiet mountain home. The house itself was very cozy--just the right size for one couple, although the twin beds in the loft would be great for kids. It was very clean, well-maintained, and comfortable with lots of great features. We never used the fire pit or hot tub, but we loved the hillside swing. It was perfect for bird watching and enjoying the absolutely gorgeous view of the mountains. Even little things were great. For example, I had been wrestling with some bad Achilles tendinitis, so I was incredibly relieved to find a seat built into the master bathroom's shower! I would probably have ended up sitting on the floor otherwise.

As far as things to do, there's really no lack of activities in the area. Hiking, bird watching, zip lines, skiing/snowboarding (in season), gem mining, shopping, etc. I also highly recommend taking a tour of the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center on the Lees-McRae campus. They take in injured wildlife, rehabilitate the animals, then release them back into the wild. It's really neat, and it's almost completely student-run. Although there are some great shops and restaurants in Banner Elk, the best are definitely in Blowing Rock. Plan to take at least half a day to explore downtown if you have time. If you do, don't miss out on the free fudge samples at Kilwin's!

My wife and I only had a couple of tiny complaints. First, the pillows in the master bedroom were too soft and went flat. We ended up switching them for the ones from the loft beds, which were slightly better. Some firmer/fluffier options would have been nice. I suggest bringing your own pillows, if possible. Second, some of the dishes in the kitchen were too big to fit in the dishwasher. The rotating part in the middle of the dishwasher couldn't spin because the plates were in the way. I would recommend to the owner to invest in smaller "big" plates and/or a roomier dishwasher. Otherwise, though, my wife and I couldn't have asked for a better place to spend our honeymoon! Thanks for making it the best week of our lives!

Perfect weekend

  • 5 of 5

This is our second trip to Banner Elk and this property. It was a perfect weekend getaway and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Everything was clean and in order, the view great, and we thoroughly enjoyed the time. Thank you for a problem-free, restful experience! We'll be back.

Beautiful Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying at the Tranquility Cottage. It was a peaceful, natural setting. The cottage is nicely appointed and very comfortable. We loved sitting in the hot tub in the cool evenings and watching the fire flies. The cottage was a perfect fit for our family of 4 and had everything we needed. We will definitely be back.

What a beautiful and comfortable place to get away!

  • 5 of 5

We had a very relaxing time. We definitely want to come back. The only thing you need to know is the top element needs to be replaced. All else was just right!

Owner's Response: When you mentioned the top element not working -- did you mean the broiler in the kitchen oven? We just turned it on and it works ok.

Beautiful Community!

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of staying at the Tranquility Cottage in early May 2016. The weather was perfect at 60 degrees practically the entire stay. We enjoyed the hot tub at night, which was private and quite comfortable, and even played a few rounds of chess in-doors. In the morning if you drive around the mountain behind the cabin or take the trail behind the cottage, you have a perfect view of the sunrise! It was absolutely breathe-taking. Not to mention, all of the amazing mountain hikes within 1 hour of the cottage. We would definitely come back again!
