It was the serenity of this home that sealed the deal for Karen and Gene when they decided to purchase it in 2007. It was the perfect way to complement their love of entertaining friends and family while being able to provide them a vacation retreat away from home. Let us share it with you!
Selena & Karen purchased this cottage in 2007
My husband and I decided on this property due to several factors- location, the upstairs loft bedroom, the fireplace and the amazing reviews. The location was great and placed perfectly for what we wanted to do- wineries, hiking, scenic drives and Gettysburg. The house itself was nice, but the devil's in the details.
The fireplace was out of order and we didn't know until we got there. yea there's a wood-burning stove in the basement, but if you've been dreaming of chilly nights with a fireplace, a flip-the-switch stove in a cold basement and a slightly dingy couch isn't cutting it.
The upstairs mattress needs to be replaced. We sat on it and sank. Plus it had a slight dip in it from use. So we stayed in the downstairs bedroom- the mattress was better, but the pillows give no support, just saying. The first night some compressor or something went off right outside the bedroom window (which is literally behind the headboard) at 2am. Loudly. We woke up wondering what happened.
In the info, it says it has a Keurig coffee maker. That being the case, we bought some kcups for the weekend. When we got there, no Keurig. So we had to call Selena and she had us look for it in the cabinets and then sent one over-a couple hours later. Her husband did seem apologetic and brought wine.
But beyond all of the above, was the cleanliness level. It simply wasn't 5 stars and frankly needed to be cleaned. It seemed like it hadn't been swept or dusted for a few weeks, like they cleaned after the last people left but didn't spruce it up before we came. All the blinds were super dusty, and the kitchen blind also had food bits and dead bugs stuck to it. That's disgusting and not what I'm paying for. The inside of the cabinets needs to be cleaned out, the dishes felt like they needed to be washed before you used them and all of the pot holders had dried food stuck to them. Again, that's unacceptable. All the rugs needed a wash. Also, we noticed as soon as we got there that the toilet leaked around the bottom. We told Selena's husband and he said they'd fix it the next day just let them know when we'd be out. So we did the next morning and the reply was ok, or would you rather we took care of it after the end of your stay? We said we guessed it could wait and then we didn't hear back for over 8hrs. No offer to "make it right".
These are details of what I'd want to know. If they fixed these issues it'd be great. As it is, if I'd known, we'd have stayed somewhere else.
Tucked away down a narrow country lane, this clean and well-maintained cottage met our every expectation. Although there was an initial problem with the A/C, contact with the owner was easy and the problem was corrected immediately. The location provided easy access to the National Apple Harvest Festival in nearby Biglerville, and the quiet of the surrounding woods and farm land was conducive to our habit of playing bridge. All in all, a very pleasant experience.
This home had everything our group needed during a four-day stay! The place was very clean and well-equipped (cleaning supplies, kitchen utensils, linens, towels). The check in and check out process were very "low fuss" compared to other properties I've rented. Definitely a great choice. You can't go wrong!
The house was very clean, pleasant, quiet, completely new looking kitchen, bathrooms. Everything worked well. Lovely deck outside. Comfortable beds. paper towel, toilet paper, dish soap all present. Even water bottles in the fridge.
Our vegetarian daughters did have a bit of a shock from the animal heads on the walls.
We'd stay there again.
This spot was stunning! We stayed for a month and found it to be just what we needed. There was a little stream that the kids loved tramping down to. We were minutes from the freeway. The house itself was lovely! It was so much more spacious than we had expected. The gas fireplace made evenings so cozy. And in the morning we could see the sunrise from the huge windows. Loved this spot!
