About Alan

The quest for tranquility is one we all strive for. Having devoted 25 years running my own business and yet another 10 working for a Fortune 500 company, I opted for early retirement to continue my search. My previous life afforded me the opportunity to travel the world; China, Russia, the Baltic, Europe, Africa, South Africa, Australia, Greece and Portugal to name a few. Each time I visited a foreign country I tried to picture myself retiring in its midst with its specific climate, traditions and way of life. Portugal was on the verge of getting the nod until I discovered healthcare and taxes on foreigners were not conducive to my parameters I had established for myself. My first visit to Costa Rica was perpetrated by a business associate who indicated his parents had retired here several years prior. He arranged for my visit to see them and the rest is history. It is here that I find the tranquility that I’ve never lost nor ever will. It is here that I found a mountaintop that can now be shared for others to enjoy the views of the Pacific, and the Central Valley. It is here at Cima Estelar (Stellar Heights) that one can find a glimpse into the secrecy of nature; Toucans, parrots, sloths, iguana, giant woodpeckers and flora comparable to the Garden of Eden.

Why Alan chose Central Valley - San Jose

This breathtaking home is located on top of a mountain in Puriscal, Costa Rica. Experience rural Costa Rica landscape, amazing lightning shows, toucans, buzzards, cows! We have a few dogs as well. Mountain top views of the Ocean with amazing sunsets and perfect climate year round.

*Pick fruit from our fruit trees around the house. Oranges, Limes, Sweet Lime, Starfruit, Avocados, Bananas..

What makes this guest house unique

Watch the sunset over the Gulf of Nicoya on your balcony set 4,000 feet above sea level.

Guestbook comments from the owner

(Transcribed from the in-house guest book)

These views are breathtaking! And it is impossible to capture with pictures. It is something that can only be appreciated in person. The rolling clouds could be enjoyed all day and the twinkling lights of the Central Valley are incredible. We began our journey two weeks ago in Manzanillo on the Caribbean side, worked our way up to Arenal and La Fortuna, then here for the final part of our trip. The amazing Twilight Bunker was the perfect end tour honeymoon. We have experienced many things here and your kindness and hospitality will not be forgotten. Now we are sitting here, bags packed, and not at all ready to go home to slushy Minnesota (several inches of slush expected tonight). We only wish we could stay and enjoy this place longer. We couldn't have asked for a better experience here. Take care and, Alan; best of wishes for a long and happy marriage with Yamileth.

Stunning view

  • 5 of 5

The house was beautiful and the views from every angle were just amazing. The morning view from our bed energized us and helped us get the day started. The property had a safe, private and relaxed atmosphere. The house was clean and equipped with everything we needed for our short stay. Alan met us and helped us find the property and also answered any questions we had about surrounding areas. It was our best vacation we've had, definitely a do over.

Owner's Response: So pleased your first visit was a memorable one and we hope you'll return as well. A visit to Cima Estelar (Stellar Heights) provides you with an excellent taste of the real Costa Rica without the throngs of tourists and troublesome traffic of San Jose. Perched on a mountaintop with a 4,000 foot elevation provides you an unbelievable perspective of the Pacific Ocean and the entire Central Valley. We thank you for your kind words and look forward to your return. Skeeter Coleman Owner

A perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We only had the opportunity to stay here for three nights, but they'll be some of the most memorable of all our travels around the planet!

The drive up from San Jose was amazing, with views just getting better and better as we ascended the mountain. The roads have twists and turns however, they're perfectly paved, as in, we didn't see one pothole...just smooth black pavement.

Alan our host, was so kind and came into Puriscal to escort us the rest of the way. You'd need a GPS of some sort as there are no street names, but once you're there, there are lots of landmarks to get your bearings.

You'll want a 4x4 to reach the property as you take the final ascent to your parking spot and the bunker.

The views are simply breathtaking, and you have to experience it to fully appreciate how amazing the Twilight Bunker is! The property is beautifully manicured with hummingbirds visiting the lush gardens! Both the inside and outside were immaculate. Apple TV was a nice touch, and wifi is fast (if you really need to stay connected up there). It has everything you'll need to make yourself at home.

The shower. I never want to shower anywhere else now!

The water out of the tap is fed from a natural spring and is amazing! Don't waste your money on bottled water.

Another nice touch is the journal for guests to write in, so take the time to share.

Alan knows the places to go, so listen to his advice. Pollo Granjero, the fried chicken place in Puriscal is the best, by far, we've ever had. Two of you can eat for under $10.

The people in Puriscal are so friendly, smiling faces everywhere, and always willing to lend a hand if you're looking for something.

The one and only negative thing to write about is that we had to leave. We will most certainly return, next time though for a minimum of a week!

Thanks so much Alan for being such a great host, and all the best to your family!

See you next year! Mark & Stacey - Canada

It is all about the view!!!

  • 4 of 5

The bunker was fine. Had all the necessities except toilet paper. Suggestions to you are that you make sure there is toilet paper at least enough for a night and to have your caretaker have the refrigerator turned on and ice cubes in the trays. When the check in is 4 pm and the temps in Costa Rica are high there is nothing better after a long drive than a cold drink. I saw in the guest book that you had previous guests within a week. Another suggestion would be for the caretaker to come in before a new arrival to sweep up the dead bugs on the floor. I know it is Costa Rica and there are bugs but it isn't all that appealing to find dead ones all over the floor when you arrive. Caretaker lives right on the property and could easily do these couple little things for you to make new arrivals just a bit more comfortable.

Owner's Response: Hi Kim. Im sorry you had a difficult time with our temporary caretaker. I was in the USA on a trip for a medical emergency and wasn't able to attend you personally. I wish I was made aware but I never heard anything from you via the phone numbers or my email address that I gave you before your arrival. Speaking of cleanliness, I was able to some clean up my house after you left it trashed sink full of dirty dishes, a pot of mashed potatos, dirty pans, half full coffee mugs and coffee pot on the kitchen table, remains of your scrambled eggs, toast and fruit breakfast scattered on the table, wine glasses in the bathroom, and garbage throughout the house.. Thankfully my cleaning crew is top notch as I could not have not done it alone before my next guests arrived. Hope you had a better experience in the rest of your travels in Costa Rica. Sorry we couldn't live up to your expectations! Good luck, Alan

Absolutely breathtaking views

  • 5 of 5

This place was amazing especially for the price. Clean beautiful house with breathtaking views. Tropical birds right outside your doorstep singing there sweet songs. The hospitality was wonderful, definitely one of the nicest places to stay in Costa Rica. Mr. Coleman was so helpful giving directions and led us to some beautiful spots, can't wait to go back there.

Honeymooner's Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the twilight bunker was nothing short of spectacular. You sit atop a mountain looking down at the birds of prey that populate the hillside. Plan to come here and stay. We had activities planned, but ended up staying to cook, read, and observe a 360 degree view of Costa Rica.

The amenities are modernized. I highly recommend a GPS for your travels unless you have been in country before. The drive here is not too difficult, but we were thankful to have it for getting out of San Jose. Ground clearance and a strong motor will make you more confident on the short, but steep paved hill climb to your summit. Those less confident can simply walk up from below, but we enjoyed the adventure.

Thanks for a great stay!
