Stellar Heights, Cima Estelar, is strategically perched 4000 feet above sea level in the mountain town of Puriscal, Costa Rica. Views of the Gulf of Nicoya (Pacific Ocean) are as common as commanding views of the entire Central Valley of Costa Rica from your mountain perch. Median temperature is 72 Fahrenheit or 22 Celsius year round.  Night views are just as spectacular as the stunning sunsets which enable one to see the sun sink into the Pacific as it performs its kaleidoscopic magic in the sky.

About Alan

The quest for tranquility is one we all strive for. Having devoted 25 years running my own business and yet another 10 working for a Fortune 500 company, I opted for early retirement to continue my search. My previous life afforded me the opportunity to travel the world; China, Russia, the Baltic, Europe, Africa, South Africa, Australia, Greece and Portugal to name a few. Each time I visited a foreign country I tried to picture myself retiring in its midst with its specific climate, traditions and way of life. Portugal was on the verge of getting the nod until I discovered healthcare and taxes on foreigners were not conducive to my parameters I had established for myself. My first visit to Costa Rica was perpetrated by a business associate who indicated his parents had retired here several years prior. He arranged for my visit to see them and the rest is history. It is here that I find the tranquility that I’ve never lost nor ever will. It is here that I found a mountaintop that can now be shared for others to enjoy the views of the Pacific, and the Central Valley. It is here at Cima Estelar (Stellar Heights) that one can find a glimpse into the secrecy of nature; Toucans, parrots, sloths, iguana, giant woodpeckers and flora comparable to the Garden of Eden.

Why Alan chose Central Valley - San Jose

This breathtaking home is located on top of a mountain in Central Valley, Costa Rica. Experience rural Costa Rica landscape, amazing lightning shows, toucans, buzzards, cows! We have a few dogs as well. Mountain top views of the Ocean with amazing sunsets and perfect climate year round.

*Pick fruit from our fruit trees around the house. Oranges, Limes, Sweet Lime, Starfruit, Avocados, Bananas..

What makes this house unique

Watch the sunset over the Gulf of Nicoya on your balcony set 4,000 feet above sea level.

These views are breathtaking! And it is impossible to capture with pictures. It is something that can only be appreciated in person. The rolling clouds could be enjoyed all day and the twinkling lights of the Central Valley are incredible. We began our journey two weeks ago in Manzanillo on the Caribbean side, worked our way up to Arenal and La Fortuna, then here for the final part of our trip. The amazing Twilight Bunker was the perfect end tour honeymoon. We have experienced many things here and your kindness and hospitality will not be forgotten. Now we are sitting here, bags packed, and not at all ready to go home to slushy Minnesota (several inches of slush expected tonight). We only wish we could stay and enjoy this place longer. We couldn't have asked for a better experience here. Take care and, Alan; best of wishes for a long and happy marriage with Yamileth.

Pura Vida,

Mike & Erin

Spectacular views

Alan was a gracious host. Even took us to Puriscal to the MaxiPali for groceries our first day and did a load of laundry for us! Above and beyond. The mountaintop home views all the way to the Gulf of Nicoya and beyond on a clear day. At night in the other direction the views of San Jose's lights were beautiful. The views were constantly changing with the clouds and the aerial show the different birds displayed everyday. When the rainclouds rolled in as it does many days during the rainy season, you are enveloped in the cloud forest. There is a short gravel road from the highway to the gated entrance to the property. From there it is a paved and very steep road to the top where the home is located. And definitely worth the drive. The home was as the pictures portrayed - a large studio with kitchen, living area, and queen sized bed (the best mattress we experienced on our trip so far) with a large bathroom and a stone shower. The location is very private so curtains are not needed to interrupt the view. Alan showed us several good food locations in the area which we sampled. Pizza Express in Puriscal was especially good.

The TV had only local Spanish stations from San Jose, so Alan graciously loaned us his AppleTV unit for our week-long stay for us to watch some of our favorite programs and 1st run movies with my iTunes account. If there was a negative, it would be a few large bugs we encountered, but Costa Rica is in the tropics after all. We would much prefer that to the smell of bug spray permeating the house.

The wireless internet service was the fastest we had experienced in our travels in Costa Rica. Not quite fast enough to stream a movie but plenty fast for my work online. I enjoyed the view from the deck every morning while drinking Costa Rican coffee and working online or making conference calls back to the US.

Alan, his wife, their young son and the friendly dog, Demo, also live halfway down the mountain on the property. We were able to do laundry in the common area. We would love to stay here again. The only reason I rated the property a 4 instead of a 5 was it was a little hard to find initially, the steep road to the top and that it was a studio. We loved our time there, the cool weather and gorgeous views of the mountains.

Beautiful views!!

  • 4 of 5

Our week stay was very pleasant. The view of the valley was beautiful day and night! On most days we could see the Bay of Nicoya. The clouds were beautiful as they would flood through the mountains and completely hide the valley and then clear so we could see bright stars. The temperatures were nice and cool and we did have a few rain showers. The accommodations were modern and clean and of course a few tropical insects. Our host Allen was a great help to us even taking us to get groceries the first day. He also suggested restaurants and was great about fixing or supplying us with needs that came up. The property is beautiful and the views cannot be beat! We would definitely recommend staying here and we look forward to returning!

Birdlandia with an amazing view

  • 5 of 5

Wow. I want to live here for a year. I stayed in the upstairs cottage with a balcony in the canopy of the trees. The birds were singing and flying by in a myriad of colors. Some perched on the balcony railing....magical. the different songs were entrancing. Watching the clouds rise up in the afternoon and fill the valley with thunderous rain and sometimes lightening was exciting. I felt like I was watching the world being was very, very clean and comfortable. It is situated in the mountains of a verdant valley. yes there was wireless internet. The host Skeeter "walks on water". Just go and fall in LOVE with LIFE again.

Another Fantastic Stay at Cima Estelar!

  • 5 of 5

This was our fourth visit to Cima Estelar and can't wait to return for our fifth! The property is beautiful and relaxing. Skeeter is a perfect host and is very accommodating. Its location is not far from the beach, the airport, or the volcano, making it a perfect home base for all of your sightseeing. If you're looking for adventure or relaxation or a combination of both, we highly recommend this as the best place to stay in Costa Rica.

Absolutely Incredible

  • 5 of 5

I had expectations prior to going to Costa Rica, but this place blew me away. The views were incredible. The Pacific on one side, and San Jose on the other. The night views of San Jose were unbelievable. Open the windows and the breeze blows through the house and feels great. My host was gracious, knowledgeable, and a blast to be around. He knows the area, the people, and can help you fill your day with so many enjoyable things to do. We went to a lot of places off the beaten path for your average tourist. I enjoyed every last minute I was there. I would recommend this place to anyone looking to get away and enjoy the place I will return to as often as possible, Costa Rica.
