About Sara McFarland

The home is owned by my mother. The home is used by the family and a handful of renters that love it as much as we do.

Sara McFarland purchased this house in 1993

Why Sara McFarland chose Ventura

The home was purchased as a fishing and weekend get away for my parents. It is just that, a wonderful little get away.

What makes this house unique

There is Kayaking, surfing, swimming, fishing as well as just sitting and enjoying the ocean. A sea wall separates the property from the Pacific Ocean. At low tide, the full use of the beach is available, and at high tide you can fish from the seawall and watch as the tide sometimes rushes up the steps. The house is 5 minutes from Downtown Ventura, yet it feels as if you are on an isolated island.

Amazing location!

If you seek a beach front location in Ventura County, then this little home is worth considering. It's an older and modest home, yet I was there with my family to enjoy the beach and it served our purposes perfectly.

Thank you for another wonderful experience. This place is nothing short of fabulous. If I could put the experience in a bottle and sell it, I would be rich!!! My parents had a "Beach Cottage" here when I grew up and so I understand what it is like. The previous comment is really out to lunch. The temperature in Ventura is usually 75 degrees year around. It is considered hot here when it is in the 80's and having a sweatshirt for the evenings in the summer is common. Winters are also very mild but there was a cold wave during January so they probably had to deal with an unusual situation. Screens on the windows are nice, but at the beach they oxidize really fast as does most things and you would be changing them often. The salt water tears things up. The house was built a while ago and not much has been done to update, but everything is clean and the owners are easy to work with. It's all about the location. Surfer's out front, Dolphins and sea lions swim by, and you can't get any closer to the water. At high tide I can fish from the front porch, and at low tide we hunt for tide pool animals. The kids love it. If you have high blood pressure here, you are really sick! Anyway, thanks for letting us use your little piece of paradise and we hope to be back soon. :-)

We arrived for a three-night stay in January and found the house to be freezing cold. There is no central heat and the wall heater in the living room had been shut off instead of being left in anticipation of arriving guests. We spent the first three hours in sweaters and coats waiting for the room to heat up. Concerned about warmth at night, we went to the bedrooms and found that the blankets were light quilts rather than blankets appropriate for the winter. There was one space heater for three bedrooms. At this point I began texting the owner asking about additional sources of warmth and she directed us to the garage to find additional space heaters. However she didn’t know exactly where they were and there was a lot of clutter in the garage, so we never found them.

We went to use the bathroom and found there was no toilet paper in either bathroom. At this point I called the owner and she was very apologetic about the situation. She suggested that we go to a nearby store and buy extra blankets and that she would repay us for the blankets and toilet paper. She also offered to “make it right” with respect to the uncomfortable start to our stay.

The house eventually warmed up and we settled in. The home was clean, the water was hot (thankfully!), the wi-fi internet worked fine and there was ample space for parking. During the warmer months, I’m sure it would be a better experience and for that reason I rated this home as Fair rather than Poor. However the house is in need of updating. For example, the living room furniture is old and lumpy and none of the windows have screens.

Since the owner had offered to “make it right,” I texted her as we left to ask what she thought would be appropriate given the circumstances. She said she’d reimburse us for the toilet paper. There are better and similarly priced properties in the area that I would urge others to consider before renting this one.

Owner's Response: For the past 20 or so years we have rented our family beach house. Our hope is that all guests have a good experience. Most do as the majority of our guests are previous renters. Unfortunately these guests has a less than good experience. The house not being prepared for their arrival is totally unacceptable and steps have been taken to rectify this issue. Our house is a family friendly little beach bungalow built in 1963 and we do not represent it as anything else.

Wonderful place to gather!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time on this property. It offers wonderful views of Faria Beach in both directions and the ocean and beach are extremely accessible. The house is very well maintained and has many essentials on hand for your use. I was worried I would have to bring in many things from home, but that was not the case. Plenty of linens and kitchen items were provided. This is a good place to gather with friends and family. There is ample parking on the property, which is sometimes a problem in this area. We had teenagers out and they took advantage of using surfboards, boogie boards and the kayak.

I highly recommend this property. It is a perfect place to relax, but you are still close to town if you need anything. The owner was a joy to work with.

Family Reunion

Was a wonderful stay. Roomy and comfortable. The owner was great to work with. All the accommodations of home and more! This was our second time of renting this property and we were very pleased. Fishing from the deck in the morning, exploring the tide pools in the afternoons, watching the dolphins and glorious sunsets were enjoyed by all. Thank you for opening your beach house to us. See you again in 2 years. God bless you!

We had the time of our lives at this cozy beach front (and I mean the ocean waves come up your steps to the ocean wall beachfront) house that is in the perfect location right on the water! The kids played in the sand, we walked on the beach, and just enjoyed the relaxing weekend here. The home is super clean and inviting. The views are indescribable. I could not wait to get up in the morning and cook breakfast as I looked out the huge window and could see all the surfers out. It was truely amazing and the owners were super easy to work with. Will definately be back soon!!!
