Overview

About the property

2 bedrooms (1 is loft) 2 1/2 baths, sleeps 6. (1 queen bed, 2 double beds)

You will truly feel like you have escaped the hustle and bustle on this beautiful property. Authentic log cabin is perched on a hill overlooking a 50 acre private lake. Spend your days swimming, fishing (no license required as it is a private lake), canoeing, kayaking, and hiking. Sip your coffee on the dock or in the screened gazebo by the water. Plus - one mile total private frontage on the Rappahannock River (in drier weather a 'headwater' stream in which kids can wade and splash and frolic).

The property is secluded and a true one-of-a-kind find. Three miles to the nearest state road. Without traffic, 1 1/4 hour drive to/from DC.

Lakeside gazebo, deck/dock area, swimming float. Kayaks, canoe.

This is a unique and private retreat. It is so far at the end of the road you will most likely not see anyone else during your stay. The porch is a favorite place for rocking and talking. The shaded picnic area and the campfire pit are wonderful gathering spots.

The gazebo and dock area are special places for kids and adults as well.

Guestbook comments from the manager

What a perfect setting for the final leg of our trip to Gettysburg an the Washington DC area. Pictures do not do this place justice - it is absolutely beautiful here! Saw many deer, birds, a fox and a groundhog. Many thanks for sharing your piece of paradise!

Just perfect

  • 5 of 5

Lovely, quaint and charming. Kids had a blast sleeping in loft. Loved the swings and hammocks. The fire pit was awesome. The view of the lake was awesome. Fyi..friday nights down the road at Orleans Market is a local music jam. We didnt get to go since we didnt stay on a friday night, but I would recommend it. This is a cute cozy local spot (restaurant and convenience store).

Great place to stay even in the winter. We loved the cabin and the lake. I would love to bring the kids this summer if we are able.

A special place

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't be happier with this excellent rental. The owners were so warm and welcoming and went out of their way to make our stay special. Put up a Christmas Tree and sweet decorations and plenty of fire wood. We were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary! Close to Warrenton yet far from everything. Beautiful morning sky.

Sweet little cabin. Very cozy!

  • 3 of 5

This cabin is lovely, cozy & very private. We were there in mid-October, so we really enjoyed the fireplace, or sitting on the porch in a rocker wrapped in a blanket, cup of coffee & book in hand... Usually... Which brings me to a few things which were often disconcerting reality checks:

1. The drive to the cabin is a LONG way down a dirt road. You turn off the main road, off the secondary road, off the dirt road onto a dirt track which might well be impassable following a good rain. After all that turning and traversing, you'd expect to be so far back in the woods you'd never know there were other humans on earth! What you have actually done is complete about 4/5 of a circle and you end up not actually that far (as the crow flies) from that main road. In the quiet evening we could hear road noise from the main highway. There was a large construction project underway on that road, and during the day we could CLEARLY hear the construction equipment & the voices of the workers calling back and forth to each other, usually for most of the day. Added to that, there was some construction (sawing & nail guns) nearby. Consequently, we were occasionally forced inside to escape the noise. It's a beautiful place, but don't get to thinking you are alone.

2. The Stink-Bug Ick Factor is exceptionally high. They are everywhere. We both live/have lived in the country. Bugs & such do not cause us to be horrified. But really, they are everywhere. It's not that the owners fail to keep the place clean, or fail to do something to keep them out. This is simply a plague of Biblical proportion, against which humans have little way to stem the tide. Do not leave your suitcase open. You WILL bring some home with you.

3. There isn't really a trail around the lake. Do not think you can take a quiet afternoon hike around the pretty lake. You'd need a machete & a native guide.

4. The key left for us at the cabin did not work on the gate down the road. Each time we came & went we had to climb through a fence & extract a hidden key from a lock box attached to a tree at such an angle that the first time, when the cover popped off, the key fell into the 1 ft. deep layer of dead leaves below, in the mist, in the growing dark, with only light from a cell phone to search by... Following that, we understood that extracting that key was a 2-person job. One to work the lockbox & one to catch the key.

5. Do not arrive for the first time in the dusk/dark.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking time to leave us a review! We really appreciate your feedback as it helps us improve from year to year. 1. We are sorry that someone else on the lake was building their future home during your stay, but unfortunately that was out of our control. We can assure future guests that they will finish soon and our guests can and will enjoy the peace and quiet of the private lake. Also, as the crow flies we are nearly 2 miles from the nearest highway. 2. You are so right when you say the stink bugs are a plague! Nothing kills them and they are a thorn in our side in the country, but thankfully they are only a problem in the fall and spring here in Northern Virginia and every year seem to be less and less. This is great news! 3. Please keep in mind that we do not own ALL the property around the lake. What property we have around the lake is mowed down frequently and easily accessible. To the left gets quite thick and woody, but that's not our property, so unfortunately I can't speak to that. We have well maintained and easily accessible trails through the woods to the beautiful Rappahannock River. These are very well traveled by kids and family and do not require the use of machetes or native guides. 4. For future guests, please feel free to keep the lockbox gate keys with you during your stay, as this will ensure you won't be fumbling in the dark every time you come and go. We have had no complaints on our key system as to date, so we can assure you they work just fine. If you're used to vacationing in the city, this is definitely not the place for you! Here you will find rustic beauty, quiet tranquility, nature, bugs, woods, and your occasional bald eagle. Thanks again for your review. We are sorry your disconcerting reality checks are a little out of our control, but we hope you enjoyed your stay regardless!

Its as beautiful as the pictures look - truly a very unique experience

We had a wonderful 4 days at the cabin - location is close enough for day trip to the mountains of Shenandoah National park or the sites of Washington DC and Arlington. We spent one day at the cabin, never leaving it, just to enjoy the lake and the scenery. It was the perfect spot to wrap up our fall vacation.
