My Husband grew up close by and went to school in Bar Harbor
Sue Smith purchased this cottage in 1978
Because the view was so good and the quiet on a small short dead end road with only 5 other properties all spaced with 4 acre lots
Close to Mount Desert Island and also Ellsworth if you like big stores. Close to Bangor International Airport 30 minutes up the road and Bar Harbor airport with flights now to Newark and Boston
This cottage is beautifully maintained, clean and attractively furnished. There is a large lawn and meadow that leads down to a very large expanse of beach. The view from the porch looks over the lawn and water. The view from the master bedroom is of the water and a spectacular sunrise. You don't even have to get out of bed to see it The cottage is shining clean, with comfortable beds and a fire place in case it turns cool. While one can see the bridge that crosses from the main land to Bar Harbor island the traffic sounds did not disturb us. In fact, being close to the bridge meant that we had a very quick and easy ride to everything in Bar Harbor. We had a special treat/activity of going to Wild Iris Farm in Bar Harbor and learning how to drive a cart pulled by a Shire horse. (The kind seen in Downton Abbey.) If you don't want to drive a cart yourself, you can enjoy a ride in down town Bar Harbor in carriage pulled by horses from Wild Iris Farm. We had a wonderful time with lots of things, even when the rain came. The cottage was very cozy when the fog rolled in. This place is a must stay. One final thing. Sue is great. I left a number of things behind in the closet. She arranged to have her cleaning lady send the clothes off the very next day. I will definitely stay here when I come to Bar Harbor next.
My husband and I spent a week here in late August and fell in love with the Acadia area! This home has all the amenities, including a washer/dryer and was spotless. The kitchen was well-stocked and we enjoyed the privacy, yet convenience to Bar Harbor/Acadia. At night, the only sounds are the lapping of waves on the private beach. We even cooked fresh lobsters over the firepit down by the water. We intend on returning next summer and highly recommend this idyllic spot.
Our family just returned from a week spent in the Acadia area. Sue and Gordon's cabin made the perfect home base for our excursions to Acadia National Park. The cabin is cozy, clean, and stocked with everything you need. We even tried our hand at making lobsters over the fire pit by the beach--perfect!! The house sits right on the water with a large lawn and several trees. Each morning a flock of geese trudged in to eat any apples that might have fallen off the trees. There was even a seal in the water who came by and put on quite a show! We enjoyed looking for shells and other sea creatures during low tide. The cabin has a secluded feel, yet is conveniently located just a short drive from Acadia and Bar Harbor.
We would highly recommend staying in this lovely home if you are visiting the area. You won't be disappointed!! Thank you, Sue and Gordon, for sharing your wonderful home with us!!
This beautiful cabin is in a perfect location for spending time at Acadia National Park. It was comfortable, clean and well-supplied. We loved our mornings on the porch and the beautiful views of the Waterway. The Trenton Lobster Pound at the end of the street has the most reasonable prices in the area for live lobsters. We will definitely come back!
We have enjoyed a lovely, relaxing week at Sue and Gordon's cabin. It is perfectly located for trips into Acadia National Park while providing beautiful water views and low tide exploration walks. All the needed comforts including the bonus use of a washer/dryer. We slept with the windows open every night and enjoyed the quiet location and only the sounds of the water against the shoreline. All the geese, gulls, and other water ducks were all entertaining. Great having the firepit!
Bayview-by-the-Sea is a unique house in a unique location, a log cabin overlooking Western Bay and Mount Desert Island. Sitting on its veranda overlooking the extensive garden leading down to the Bay is a wonderful, peaceful experience – with this serene experience continued on several evenings as we sat at our fire in the fire pit by the shore, with the full moon reflected in the waters of the Bay.
The house itself is very simple, as one would expect of a log cabin. It’s got lots of everything – perhaps too much, as there is almost nowhere to put your things!
Its location is ideal for exploring Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. We travelled from the house to both of these on several occasions: highly-recommendable places to visit include Bar Harbor, Echo Lake and Seal Cove Auto Museum.
From Trenton it is easy to take a day-trip up to Canada as we did, travelling up US-1: after crossing the border at Calais, we journeyed around to St Andrews – an unexpectedly wonderful town to visit.
And even with all these activities we still had time to explore the shoreline right in front of our house: where else could you do that?
We had a lovely time during our stay! Sue and Gordon could not have been more gracious hosts and were readily available to answer any questions. The highlight of our stay was viewing the Perseids meteor shower with a backdrop of the Milky Way! Our 6yo and 4yo had a great time searching for crabs and shells at low tide and the house was a peaceful resting point for us between trips to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park! We had a lovely time!
LL Bean has a local free bus hop on hop off that you can take from a few places not too far away. They allow you to take your bikes as well and they drop you off in the park. You can Kayak or canoe right from our beach and there are several rental companies that deliver right to the house. We can sit on our porch and on a coming tide quite often see seals swimming up into the bay.
