A perfect writer's retreat, or couple's sanctuary.
Update: A recent Monterey County ruling requires that stays in Big Sur vacation rentals must be 30 days, or limited to one rental within a 30-day period. As we do not use the calendar, please email or telephone for availability, and to discuss how you may best enjoy this beautiful cabin within the new county parameters.
A lovely retreat, great place to relax, stare at the stars, and listen to nature. It was 10 minutes drive from hw 1 and felt like it was completely isolated even though it was fairly easy to get to. Completely silent, except for chirping birds and the sound of a gong that is on the property if you choose to use it. Showing outside in a spa-like environment surrounded by trees (privacy) was a nice touch.
I only stayed a short time but would stay a month!
Palo Colorado Canyon is magical in itself but our recent stay in the cozy, oh so comfortable cabin this summer, was pure delight. My husband and I had read the description and reviews online so our expectations were high. We planned 3 weeks of time alone and hoped that this cabin and property would soothe our spirits; it did.
Some cabins are just a place to sleep in between the sight-seeing but here, with the redwoods, the private deck with beautiful views, mist flowing in from the ocean, brilliant sunsets, soaring hawks, colorful butterflies and the sounds of nature, and oh yeah, that great soaking tub looking out on the mountainside and canyon...that was plenty to keep us thoroughly relaxed and happy to be tucked in here for weeks. The cabin is perfect for two, cozy with a very comfortable wrap around sofa filled with pillows and large windows looking out over the canyon. It's every bit as comfortable as the bed to sleep on, though the loft has a skylight offering stunning views of the stars while lying in bed, not to be missed. We made great meals with the 2 burner propane stove and toaster oven and when chilly, the propane fireplace heated the cabin up quickly and provided a nice sense of ambiance to the room. Embree, the owner of the cabin, has provided a nice array of reading materials and particularly interesting were the books on the extensive history of Big Sur, its original settlers, challenges and legacies as well as the many hiking trails and preserves along the coast. Our stay was enhanced by Embree; she gave us plenty of privacy but was there discreetly to share her wealth of information about the area and give us ideas on places to be sure to experience. When you visit, be sure to engage her in conversation; she's an amazing creative soul.
The cabin has the ideal location; you are tucked into this lovely canyon with plenty of privacy yet it's an easy drive north into Carmel and Monterey or south farther into Big Sur and great hiking country, with plenty of great restaurants, galleries, beaches and state parks to enjoy. With so much to see and do in this area it was often hard to decide: off to explore another park, beach, trail and sample another restaurant? Or just stay put and take in the beauty of the canyon from the deck and just Be. This is a place to come for that weekend getaway but if possible, for a longer stay; it makes the decision to snuggle in some days much easier.
This review is long overdue! Love: the location, serenity of the cabin and the surroundings, Outdoor shower, comfortable bed, well-stocked kitchen, gracious hosts! Our only regret was the limited time we were there! 2 days is simply not enough to explore Big Sur!
My girlfriend and I stayed for 2 night's in Embree's cozy and charming Big Sur cabin on her beautifully terraced/gardened property overlooking the lush hills of the northern part of Big Sur. The views of the hills and ocean were stunning. Hawks soared constantly overhead and the windows of the cabin were frequented by large butterflies of many varieties. The quiet of the canyon was so peaceful and fulfilling.
The cabin itself is the ideal, classic, authentic, quintessential Big Sur cozy hideaway (add on epic views!). Charming, clean, fresh and amply stocked with almost all of your needs. Crackling automatic fireplace to boot! The bed was wonderfully comfortable with clean, fresh linen (... which triggered a couple of unintended, but welcomed, late wake-ups!)
A favorite aspect of the cabin for me was taking a bath while watching the hawks out of the large picturesque windows of the bathroom ... and the hot showers off the back porch of the cabin while looking across the vast landscape of the hills and canyon.
Embree was an excellent host; she made us feel welcome and well cared for. She made sure that we knew how to come and go from her home out to the central attractions of Big Sur, and how to get safely back to the cabin ... she even provides hand-drawn maps to keep in your car during your stay! She made herself available to us if we needed her, though she allowed to have 100% privacy during our stay, which is also made possible through the arrangement of her property.
Embree's cabin was also the perfect distance to the central Big Sur Area: Pfeiffer Big Sur, Deetjen's, Nepenthe, Point Sur, Bixby Bridge, etc. ... everything within 20 minutes or less.
A highlight of our stay was also a massage experience that was found at "Namaste Therapuetic Bodyworks" which boasts all 5 star reviews. This wonderful place was located in the town of Big Sur: 46840 Hwy 1
Ste 9, Big Sur, CA 93920 right next to the Big Sur River Inn
Thank You to Embree for surprising us with a gem of an experience at her wonderful cabin. We recommend it highly and we can't wait to come again!

I was looking for a remote, tranquil and comfortable place in the middle of nature to have a solo retreat so I could catch up on my reading and do some writing. I chose this place and stayed for 5 very peaceful days. Embree, the owner was amazing and explained absolutely everything about the cabin to me — how to light the stove, turn on the heaters, even cover the skylight in the loft/sleeping area if I wanted to sleep in. The cabin is very rustic, lots of character and fascinating decor, and also super clean and comfortable. There was wifi which was another selling point for me. To call my family, I had to use FaceTime because I didn’t have any cell reception (I’m with AT&T). But Embree has an emergency phone just in case, but i never had to use it. There’s a gas stove heater and an extra electric heater in the bathroom when it gets cold at night. There were also huge windows in the living room and bathroom and all you can see are the trees and the mountains - the views were perfect.
There’s also a claw foot bathtub in the bathroom, and the shower is outside on the wooden balcony with a magnificent view of the mountains. It’s very private and there was plenty of hot water to keep warm. Embree also left shampoo and and shower gel for guests, all organic too! I had tons of fun and was very comfortable showering there - I didn’t want to get out! I wore flip flops because I have a thing about stepping on the wood floors outdoors, but it’s very clean and in excellent condition for being barefoot as well.
I was alone during my 5 days there - exactly what I wanted, and I felt VERY SAFE. I didn’t even lock the cabin doors at night. The only sound i heard was of a deer rustling through the bushes when I sat on one of the 2 decks and witnessed her walk by.
As other reviews also stated, I did have an SUV so it made navigating the dirt roads quite easy for me. I would definitely recommend having 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive to get up to the cabin, but I did see one small car navigate the same dirt roads too so it’s not impossible.
I would definitely stay there again. The cabin is located literally in the middle of everything — just a short drive north to Carmel, and south to the awesome restaurants (Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur Bakery and Nepenthe), and many of the beautiful Big Sur hikes.
Thank you Embree for sharing your beautiful cabin with us all.
My husband and I spent 3 days at this magical retreat and it was amazing. Unlike a lot of the commercial properties in Big Sur, this cabin is tucked away in the Redwoods giving you a real sense of adventure. Plus Embree, the owner is so very helpful. She made sure we had everything we needed and felt comfortable. I would absolutely recommend this place for a couple's retreat, with a relaxation and a sense of adventure.
The outdoor shower is AMAZING. The claw foot tub, surrounded by windows looking into the forest is perfect.
I hope to go back again!
