This is our vacation house and we are here every year during Spring, Summer, and Fall. Therefore, the condition of everything in the house is constantly maintained in line with our personal standards so we can continually assure our guests a high level of satisfaction. From our own rental experiences we have concluded that how frequently an owner occupies the property has as much to do with its condition as any other single factor. Perhaps this is one reason why The Hatteras Beachhouse has been occupied 95-100% over the five months of May through September for as long as we have made it available to renters.
We can offer a family a quality beach experience for a very reasonable price and position you closer to the ocean than most other houses, even those that are more expensive. Don't be fooled by other houses that advertise 'short walk to beach'. In one minute from our driveway you cross the dune on a smooth boardwalk, and there you are - at the beach. Ten minutes walking in the other direction brings you to the Ocracoke ferry, a nautical museum, a variety of retail shops, two marinas where you can see the catch of the day, and several fine restaurants. Walking a few minutes more places you in the center of the village with more restaurants and retail shops, a pharmacy, medical building, grocery store, coffee shop, a public library (with free internet access), and an exceptional photographic gallery.
Our exceptional beaches and clean waters are praised by USA Today magazine and ranked 4th in U.S. by a prestigious coastal research center in Florida. Visitors also enjoy the quaint island village of Ocracoke (free car ferry around the corner of our street), a variety of fishing experiences, biking and kayaking (rentals in the village), visiting the historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and enjoying the variety of shore birds seen throughout the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Children also enjoy the varied summer programs offered by the National Park rangers in the area.
We offer a fully equipped and newly renovated kitchen and adjoining dining area for six guests. The living room is open to both of these areas, with large picture windows looking out over natural vegetation between our furnished sun deck and the beach. The master bedroom (queen) has its own bath, and the two other bedrooms (twin beds in each) share a full bath. All bedrooms have ceiling fans, as does the great room. and the house is also centrally air conditioned. With your laptop computer and our WI-FI connection, high speed internet access is available. Under the house is an enclosed outdoor shower, a lighted fish cleaning table, and a double wide concrete driveway which can accommodate a boat and several cars.
Bed linen service is available, and a well behaved pet (1 dog only) is welcome in the house - both at an additional charge (see Rates).

My girlfriend, dog and I have rented a place in the Outer Banks three summers in a row and this was the best house yet. The location is excellent: a very short walk to the beach, with no traffic and no roads to cross to get there. Close enough to the beach you can hear the waves from the balcony (even if you can't see them), and it's convenient to go back and forth from the beach during the day to get refreshments or take a break. The rooms in the house are spacious and comfortably furnished. With two bathrooms, there is definitely space for two couples plus one or two kids. For two people and a dog, there is a lot of extra space for storing stuff. There is a new washer/dryer unit that works well in one of the bedrooms, and all the other appliances including the vacuum are also in good condition. The kitchen is stocked very generously with all the utensils you're likely to need for a week or more. Under the house protected from rain and sun there is parking for two cars, a great shower and privacy enclosure, a charcoal BBQ grill that we used almost every night, plus a handy clothesline and clothespins for drying towels etc. The AC in the house worked like a champ even though it was extremely hot outside. The ceiling fans helped circulate the air. Alan was super accommodating and helpful before, during and after our stay. He clearly cares about the property and takes great care of it and also wants his renters to have a good stay. I liked that the property had a "homey" feel, like staying in a friend's house (complete with games, DVDs, books, beach chairs), not just a rental, and that it is dog-friendly. Our dog loved the beach and house. We would definitely stay here again.
We enjoyed our stay at Hatteras Beachhouse! As others have stated, it is a very short walk to the beach. However, we learned very quickly that the drive to the beach access was also very close. If you have 4-wheel drive, this is the way to go, especially if you plan to fish. The ferry access is really close and we had our favorite meal at Hatteras Sol, which is in walking distance. The owners were super friendly and helpful. We can't wait to get back!
I loved this house, it was so nice and small and cozy! And the owners are very nice. It was a very short walk to the beach, and a great place to be with family. Very nice and quiet area!
We found this lovely, clean and comfortable beach house to be just what we were looking for in a Hatteras rental. Close to the beach (really, they are not exaggerating), this home has the charm of an older cottage with all the amenities of a newer built rental. We were not interested in a giant cookie cutter house used only as a source of income. Clearly this home is used by its very nice and accommodating owners. Alan even sent us a hand-written thank you note as he returned our security deposit. Who does that these days?
We loved being so close to the beach, in a lovely neighborhood, and near the Dancing Turtle, one of the nicest and most beautiful coffee shops I have ever been in, and around the corner from the Harbor House Seafood Market (have the nice owner steam you up some Old Bay-spiced North Carolina shrimp!! Yum!!) We also loved going over to Ocracoke on the ferry although there was quite a wait. Heading north we spent a nice hour or two in Buxton Village Books that's in a charming old house and displays the latest titles as well as many books by local authors. Would go there all the time if we lived closer.
This home is clearly well taken care of with kindness and attention, and we would certainly stay here again. Thank you, Alan, for a wonderful stay.
This was our first year staying here. We had a great time, the home was close to the beach in a quite peaceful area. Home was well furnished and in great shape. Skeeters where the only problem, but they where everywhere. I would highly recommend, this property and hope to return some day.
This is the 2nd year in a row we stayed in the Hatteras Beachhouse and again it was a great vacation! We just love this house, its located close to the beach and in a beautiful quiet area. Its close to the ferry and shopping. The surf fishing was excellent again this year, with red drum, sea mullet, & blue fish all within casting distance of the shore! Also close by is the dancing turtle coffee shop, they have the best coffee on the island. There are several tackle shops close by, I like Frisco Tackle located just up the road in Frisco. They are very helpful with setting you up with the right tackle and bait. Some of our favorite restaurants in the area are Sonny's in Hatteras for breakfast, the Hatterasman drive in, and the Frisco Sandwich Company for lunch, And Rusty's Surf and Turf located in Buxton for a delicious dinner. The Hatteras lighthouse is in Buxton and is always a great place to visit. The Grave Yard of the Atlantic Museum located in Hatteras is wonderful and very informative. And we always take the ferry over to Ocracoke to spend a day site seeing, and to eat at Howards Pub. There are several marina's in the area if you want to take a fishing charter or a sunset cruise. There is so much to see and do in Hatteras that's why we return every year, and staying at the wonderful Hatteras Beachhouse makes our stay that much more enjoyable! Thanks Again Alan & Sue!
