Lagos is an enchanting coastal town in the Algarve, which preserves its traditional Portuguese nature and has also developed into a cosmopolitan destination that welcomes thousands of tourists every year!Historically, the greatest charm of Lagos has always been its geographic location. Located opposite the North African coast at the mouth of the Bensafrim River, the town attracted settlers and foreign invaders and became a center of thriving seafaring in Portugal's Golden Age of Discoveries. Prince Henry the Seafarer made the region famous by opening his seafaring school in nearby Sagres, living in Lagos and building his famous caravels in the city. Lagos soon became a hub for maritime navigation, as explorers like Gil Eanes, who was the first man to sail around Cape Bojador in 1434, came out of this town to find new land and new wealth. Returning ships laden with wealth and slaves made Lagos a center for trade with Africa, bringing wealth and prosperity to the region. Today the charm of the region lies in the many different beautiful beaches. With the large selection of long sandy beaches, holidaymakers are spoiled for choice. Thanks to its vastness, Meia Praia is very popular with water sports enthusiasts, while on the cliffs of the smaller beaches there are grottoes, tidal bays, corners and nooks that inspire the whole family. The coast is particularly beautiful in this area and can be explored from the sea on one of the picturesque boat trips. Also, the area is very good for snorkeling and diving. The city itself is best explored on foot. Despite the destruction caused by the earthquake of 1755, many houses in the historic city have preserved their traditional masonry, the enchanting wrought-iron balconies and the shaded courtyards. The cobblestone streets are lined with shops, bars and restaurants and invite you to take a walk and the cost. This area also has a very lively nightlife. The Lagos Lagoon has a more modern flair. Lined with shops, cafes and restaurants, it is a great place to sit back and relax with a drink. Enthusiastic golfers can choose between the two nearby golf courses, both offering breathtaking views of the surroundings. Palmarés Golf is located east of Lagos on the heights and overlooks the beach Meia Praia.
