This incredible location was chosen by the subdivision owner as his personal residence when initially developed. This East facing (sunrise side) oceanfront home is located on a double lot adjacent to 200 acres of lush, unpopulated state land. A great living room of 1200 square feet, 18 foot tall ceiling and several sofa groups is a wonderful gathering place. A short walk down a secret path, next to the house, takes you to the oceans edge where you can walk for miles on a lava shelf. There are pockets of black sand and tide pools on the shelf.
The home is owned by two couples Steen and Hanne, and Bob and Kathy.Steen and Hanne were both born and raised in Denmark and have lived all over the world. Both couples live in rural Oregon where they enjoy sailing, gardening, their kids and grandkids, and the University of Oregon Ducks!
Kathy purchased this house in 2009
We have family on the Big Island.
Our house is very private, with a great view of the ocean splashing on the shore. Whales passing just off shore and pods of dolphins to swim with at the black sand beach within a 5 minutes walk. The sunrises get better and better each morning. And the stars at night are so bight you feel as if you can grab them.
Incredible views, amazing waves! Enjoy the incredible sounds of breaking of waves and singing of frogs. The great room has sliders on all sides for wonderful breezes. Very convenient location for exploring ocean lava entry. About an hour away from VNP and Hilo. It was a perfect base for us to explore east side of the island but we really wished we budget a day or two to hang out by the house. The house and surrounding area are truly magical.
We four seniors had a great two weeks here. Easy access to the closest place to view the "fire hydrant" of lava that is currently entering the ocean. We parked at the gate and walked in on a good flat road about 1-1/2 to 2 miles, then a little harder walking on the pahoehoe lava for excellent viewing before daylight,
Great neighborhood for our daily walks.
Two good choices for outdoor sitting. In front for whale watching and sunning oneself, and a covered breezeway when more protection is needed. The breeze moves around so we liked having a choice of places to hang out.
Large kitchen and outdoor gas grill allowed us to good for ourselves and guests.
While there are two "beaches" very close by, access is not easy for the less than strong and confident. The black sand beach is about six blocks away. Very steep access. My husband goes there every morning to play his flute. The other three of us chose not to take the risk. You can swim here.
Right next to this property is a route to a lava shelf that overlooks the ocean, but again , there's a steep section that eludes most of us. And no swimming. Don't plan a trip to he Puna district expecting great beaches to stroll. That's the downside of all the volcanic activity. But lots of beauty to behold.
My family recently had a wonderful stay. The place is very comfortable and homey, well-equipped and FUN. Tons of space, great views and sounds, easy access to recreation, great library with a wide range of material of all types, whimsical decor. If I had one wish it would be to have access to laundry, but that's a mere quibble amidst all of the other ways that this place gets you into the spirit of coastal Puna. Try to stay over a Wednesday so you can hit Uncle Roberts night market - so fun! Hike on the lava shelf, visit the nearby (5 min walk) black sand beach....
This house and it's location was perfect for relaxing and escaping it all with the sound of the ocean crashing throughout every room and breathtaking sunrises from the front patio. It was also a convenient drive from many great activities (snorkeling, swimming, black sand beach, good eats, Volcanoes). The pictures really don't do this home justice. The house was VERY well equipped, kitchen was great for cooking and the outdoor gas grill was a nice bonus! The home was spacious and inviting, plenty of room and comfort for six adults. Also, don't let the water catchment system deter you! There was plenty of drinking water provided and the fill-up station was close by if needed. I recommend to all!
Very private house in Kehena, just a couple of miles from Kalapana, 8 miles from Kapoho tide pools and about 10 miles from Pahoa. Easy to get to lava viewing as well. Spectacular ocean views and nice breezes. Huge family room. The kitchen was exceptionally well-equipped, even with condiments and coffee and cereal. Loved the guitar and bongos. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the stereo and despite the efforts of neighbor Robert, who helps out a lot, we were unable to get it working. Oh, well, had to listen to the waves breaking below - such first-world problems!!
Some things I've had at other HI rentals which would have been nice: ice chest, beach chairs and beach umbrellas but no big deal.
I really can't complain, we loved the house and had a great time. I would definitely recommend this house to friends and would stay there again.
The view from the house was beautiful. We were sent a nice package prior to arrival and found that it needs to be updated as some of the places are no longer in business. It would have been useful to have a washer and dryer available, but overall the house and view were very nice. Majus - St. Charles, Illinois
