Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Den, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-6)

Nellie’s Nest is named after the previous owner & long time Bokeelia creative personality, Miss Nellie. Now owned by her nephew, this home is cozy, well loved and beautifully remodeled. Reminders of Miss Nellie exist in her original art work, lush gardens, and historic memorabilia. The home is on a quiet, dead end street with water on both sides of the road & is 2 streets away from the public boat ramp. It is located on the northern tip of Pine Island, a mere 5 minutes to open water. Pine Island has a 15 mile long public bike path which runs the full length of the island but the real focus of this quaint fishing village is gorgeous Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico, and fantastic fishing for all ages. Cayo Costa State Park can be reached by private boat or ferry. Boca Grande Pass is the location of annual tarpon tournaments every June and is a brief 20 minute run by boat. You have to drive through Matlacha to get to Bokeelia so you already appreciated all the art galleries and restaurants (including Great Licks with home made ice cream!). Sit by the dock and watch the mullet jump in the canal while the egrets, herons, and osprey go fishing!

About Robert & Ellen

Robert grew up in Bokeelia and after years away from 'home' was able to return to southwest Florida. He loves being back on the water & goes fishing on the boat every chance he gets! We live 'in town', aka Fort Myers so are close by!

Robert & Ellen purchased this house in 2007

Why Robert & Ellen chose Bokeelia

This home was completely remodeled & updated after Hurricane Charley blew through in 2004. A lot of attention to detail was put into the renovation and it has been on the rental market since 2008. We now have guests returning for the 9th year in a row. Our guests rave about the peaceful location, the cleanliness, and how well appointed the house is - down to the wine bottle opener! Everything is on one level so there are no stairs to climb.

What makes this house unique

Outstanding salt water fishing - flats, inshore, & off shore; kayaking, sailing, boating, scuba diving. Tennis. Bike riding. Peace and quiet. Nature walks. Boat tours. Randell Research Center for Calusa Indian history & archeology. Bird watching. Shelling & swimming on barrier islands. Nature preserves. Sunset cruises on the Gulf. Mangoes, Key limes & other tropical fruit grown on the island. Museum of the Islands. Golf Course 2 miles away with 20+ other courses in the area. Post office within walking distance. Many restaurants accessible by boat or car. The Great Calusa Blueway paddling trail in minutes. Marina nearby for boat rentals. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel. Edison Winter Estates in Fort Myers. Cheeseburger in Paradise?? No further than Cabbage Key!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"The house was spotless & comfortable & well equipped. It was great having the kayak. We liked that it was close to biking & fishing yet is very peaceful"

It was everything we hoped for. It was clean and well appointed. The patio in the back is wonderful and very relaxing with a nice view of the canal. I would recommend this property to anyone.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking a New Year’s moment to write a review of your stay at Nellie’s Nest! That patio is a very relaxing spot to read, watch the birds, & check out the boats going by. I’m glad we had a chance to meet during your stay & hope your drive back to the frozen tundra was uneventful. Please come again!

Fisherman’s Paradise

  • 5 of 5

I have been coming to the Port Charlotte area for many years to get away from the stresses of everyday life and fish the back waters of Bulls Bay. We used to stay on little Gasparilla Island which is very nice but a little too secluded. We would spend half a day transporting all of our gear and supplies by boat to the place we were staying by boat. A couple of years ago we discovered Bokeelia and have not been back to Gasparilla Island since. Now I have discovered the perfect place to stay in Bokeelia. Nellies nest is very clean, modern, comfortable and most of all convenient. My three buddies and I arrived on a Thursday and within 20 minutes we had the boat in the water and all of our stuff unpacked and we were ready for some much needed R&R. The house is located on a canal within 150 yards from the waterside bait store which by the way has the cheapest bait and ice anywhere that I have been. The kitchen had everything that we needed to cook all of our meals and enjoy hanging out on the covered back porch. We used the gas grill to cook steaks and blackened fish. We had a absolute great time and I will definitely be back next year.

Owner's Response: Hi Rob, Thank you for taking a moment to review Nellie’s Nest & for your great comments. We’re glad you had such a good time in our corner of paradise! Jug Creek Marina & ship store at the end of the canal is very handy to gas up the boat, to get fresh bait, or to buy fresh seafood. The Tropic Star ferry also departs from there to Cabbage Key or Cayo Costa state park. It doesn’t get any better so come back soon! Ellen & Robert

Nellie's Nest is a great place to stay. The house was clean, comfortable, and welcoming. Ellen called before, and during, our trip to make sure everything was good. I will definitely be staying here again.

Okay

It's a okay property, sleeping six is a stretch but it's manageable other than you get a mediocre review from the property owners for cleanliness since you actually used the home....using the kayaks is impossible unless it's high tide since there isn't a floating dock or ramp.....I've never moped or swept a hotel room especially if I'm paying a cleaning fee.....Its in a great spot but the absentee owners are apparently People I prefer no longer to deal with.

Thanks again

But you can keep it

Owner's Response: Yes we were out of the area during your stay but always available by cell phone. In our communication w you before arrival, we said you could check in early & you thanked us for a heads up on a big island event, Mango Mania. I advised you that we would be away & your response was, "I wouldn't imagine we will need anything..." I followed up during your stay & again you replied, "We are having absolutely a wonderful time thank you". Your reservation was for 2 adults @ 1 child. The property listing is very clear on the number of bedrooms & bed types. If there were 6 in your party that may have explained the condition the house was left in. We & our housekeeper are very particular about cleaning & house maintenance & we're distressed to find the state of things. I paid our housekeeper double her usual amount to compensate her for her time. We are happy to have had many repeat guests over the years all of whom have treated us & Nellie's Nest with respect.
