Sanctuary on the North Shore of Lake Superior

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,000 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

The unique feature of this property is the spectacular panoramic high bluff view of Lake Superior. The view is unobstructed and spans the town of Silver Bay to the south and Palisade Head to the north. The A-frame structure features vaulted 2-story window views facing east to Lake Superior. Relax or dine on a second-story deck that provides expansive views along the north shore, Lake Superior, and the sun setting through the woods. The A-frame is completely secluded on 6 wooded acres.

Another unique feature is the location. Less than a mile away, the town of Sliver Bay provides easy access for groceries, wine and spirits, movie rentals, eateries, and gas. Beaver Bay is 5 minutes south with more restaurants and tourist shops. With several state parks nearby, guests will find numerous hiking and biking trails, waterfalls, and scenic views. A snowmobile/ATV trail system is within walking distance of the property.

The A-frame was completed in 2009 and is a perfect blend of new amenities and an 'up north' interior decor complete with log railings, furniture, and tongue & groove throughout. The great room has a vaulted ceiling and panoramic unobstructed views of Lake Superior. Enjoy an even more expansive view from an outdoor seating area on the edge of the bluff.

About Dave Nobbe

We are full-time working professionals who love to get away on the north shore. We have many fond memories from our own childhood of spending vacation time up north, and then created new ones with our 2 children. It is a setting that appeals to those who want to do nothing but relax & enjoy the beauty of the north shore, to those that prefer to be active outdoors.

Dave Nobbe purchased this house in 2008

Why Dave Nobbe chose Minnesota

We chose this property for the unique expansive view of Lake Superior. An added plus is the location and proximity to many state parks, Lutsen Ski Resort, restaurants and stores.

What makes this house unique

The view of Lake Superior changes constantly so we enjoy the ever-changing scenery. We continue to find new scenic locations that are accessible on short or long hikes, or on recreational vehicle trails. The views are spectacular both inside and outside so the weather does not inhibit full enjoyment of the beauty of the north shore.

Accommodations are nice for a Summer Visit, be careful with winter reservations

  • 3 of 5

Accommodations were good with the exception of the septic system. There was a problem with the line from the house to the tank obstructing easily so we were cautioned to not use laundry and be cautious with toilets.

We are a snowmobile group. Two couples on a trip to snowmobile local trails. We have been to the region 3 seasons now. We love the trails and back country experience on the North shore. The trending earlier warm weather of the last few seasons caused a problem for us this time.

We booked 3 nights (3/2/17 to 3/4/17). Typically this is prime snowmobile season. Unfortunately, the continued warm weather of 2016-17 made for very poor conditions on the trails. The A frame has good access to local trails but they were all dry. We had to trailer to trails further North and inland from Superior to access. In 2014 & 2015 we stayed at the Hungry Jack Lodge located further North on the Gun Flint Trail. This location spared us these problems in prior years because the snow is less subject to warm weather melt, further from Superior and further North.

Cancellation policy of this VRBO is quite limited. 1 month notice I believe. We tried to reschedule with the owner for another date in the 2017-18 season in February about 2.5 weeks prior to our reservation and he refused. So, we went anyway and faced the conditions mentioned. Trip was more playing games at the A frame and eating due to challenge of getting to snow.

With the continued shorter snow seasons, I would consider sledding from this location only if you are sure you will have snow in the area. I would hold on making a reservation until just before planning to go or go with a resort like Hungry Jack Lodge that has a very flexible rescheduling policy.

Loved watching the deer and wildlife right in the yard as we enjoyed our coffee on deck as we watched the sunrise over Lake Superior.

Amazing Cabin with Amazing Views!

  • 5 of 5

My fiancé and I like to plan a little "getaway" along the north shore each fall. Usually we stay somewhere in Duluth or its surrounding cities, but because we wanted to do more hiking this year, we decided to venture a little further north. We booked the A-Frame simply because we loved how cozy it looked and how close it was in proximity to the state parks that we wanted to go to, but WOW the pictures do not do it justice! This is absolutely the most beautiful rental we've ever stayed in. The rental was extremely clean and well-maintained, and felt like "home" as soon as we stepped foot inside. With three bedrooms plus a futon in the upstairs loft, the A-frame could easily fit a large family or a group of friends. There was more than enough room for the two of us! The outdoor fire pits were wonderful for evening bonfires complete with s'mores and star gazing. There was also a hammock and a variety of seating options along the exterior of the property. And I cannot emphasize enough how spectacular the view was! We had an unobstructed view of the beautiful Lake Superior in front of the A-frame, and hundreds and hundreds of trees bursting with fall colors surrounded the rest of the place. On our first morning at the rental, it was unusually warm for fall and we enjoyed breakfast on the front deck while watching the sun rise over superior.

It was wonderful having a fully-equipped kitchen to cook all of our meals in, and we utilized the grill 2/3 nights. There is a great little grocery store just a few minutes away, so we were able to stock up on the things that we needed as soon as we got into town. There are plenty of restaurants and a delicious pizza place nearby as well.

We spent most of our vacation outdoors - we hiked Tettegouche Park, Gooseberry Falls, Sugarloaf Cove, Palisade Head, Black Beach, Hidden Beach, Beaver River, Split Rock Lighthouse, and more... And the best part was that all of these places were within a 20 minute drive from the A-frame! After a long day of hiking, it was lovely to be able to head back to our rental, curl up next to the fireplace and watch a movie (there is even a selection of DVDs in the entertainment center for you to enjoy!).

We both have agreed that this was the most relaxing vacation that we've ever been on (we even liked it better than Florida!!!), and we will definitely be back. Whether you're looking for adventure or you simply want to relax and unwind (or both!) I would highly recommend the A-frame!

Amazing location and views

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed here for a long weekend July 14-17. This was our second time staying here and plan to return next summer! The views are stunning (wake up early for a sunrise... wow!) and the location is peaceful. You can be as active as you want, with all that the North Shore has to offer. But it's just as lovely to simply relax and take in the views from the deck. The house is very clean and well-equipped with all that you need (my family stocked the kitchen and cooked all of our meals). Dave is awesome to communicate with - quick to respond and has some really helpful tips for the area. Highly recommended.
