Kamilari, a quiet village in southern Crete

Kamilari is located in the south of Crete, very close to Tymbaki, Mires and the coastal villages of Kalamaki and Matala. Located 4 km from the archaeological site of Phaistos, Kamilari is an ideal place for those who want to explore the beautiful Messara Valley with its picturesque villages, rich history and beautiful coves and beaches of southern Crete. Kamilari is built on three hills. It is a quiet place with panoramic views of the olive groves of the plain of Messara, the peaks of Psiloritis and the Mediterranean Sea.

The village is very close to the beaches of the region. You will experience the impressive, traditional character of the small houses, the picturesque streets and their unique views. It has all the characteristics of a typical Cretan village with a small main square, the church and the traditional, colorful coffees.

Visit the organic market in Kamilari at Kamilari - Kalamaki intersection every Sunday from 8am to 2pm with local organic produce from nearby villages. Also craftsmen offer here products.

The local weekly market in Mires, which takes place every Saturday, is also worth visiting. Farmers from the Messara Plain offer all kinds of their fruit and vegetable products here.

In recent years, Kamilari has established many artists from the mainland and abroad. As a result, there are also art exhibitions.

But above all, in Kalamaki and Kamilari, you will find smiling and happy people who enjoy giving you their hospitality and friendship.

The name of the village, myths and history

"Kamilaris" means camel driver and is a name that dates back to the Byzantine period. Some estimates refer Kamilaris and the castle guard to the year 1583.

But the story goes back much further here. In 1959 a vaulted grave was discovered near the village, dating back to the Bronze Age (2000-3000 years before our era).

We also have our local myths. In the settlement of Metochi, just outside the village of Kamilari, lived Epimenides, one of the seven sages of ancient Greece. Legend has it that he spent 57 years in a deep sleep.

Our village is well preserved. In the years in which Crete was plagued by raids, Kamilari proved to be an ideal place - on a hill that was protected from damage.

Kalamaki is a small settlement with many amenities and good tourist infrastructure. It has the privilege of being built in the middle of a beautiful sandy beach in Messara Bay, which extends south to Kommos beach and north to the beach of Kokkinos Pyrgos. The famous ancient city of Phaestos and the archaeological sites of Kommos, Agia Triada and Matala are nearby.

Between the ancient columns and the archaeological remains of more than 2,000 years, Kalamaki is framed by the deep blue of the sea and its sky.

Nature has an enormous interest in this unique beauty. There are dozens of rare plants on the sandy hills, such as. Cedars and herbs. Caretta turtles bury their eggs in the warm sandy beaches of Messara Bay.

How to get there

Kamilari is approximately 68 km from Heraklion International Airport (HER). From the airport, take national road 90 (E75) to Rethymno, drive for 8 km and then take national road 97 to Moires. Drive for about 48 km and cross Mires city towards Tymbaki city. About 8 km to Moires (500 m before reaching Tymbaki) you will find a Nissan car station on the right. Turn left here and take the road to Kamilari for another 4.5 km. Just before the town center (here an Orelia Cretan sign) turn right towards Kalamaki village and after 900 meters at the sign "Orelia Cretan Villas & Deluxe Apartments" with a pool photo, turn left. At the top of the hill you reach the estate after 700 meters.
