About Dennis and Lynne

Family of four. Reside in Charlotte, NC but wishes they could be at the cabin all the time. Adults work for the school system that both boys attend and in County government. Dogs and chickens are also a part of the family!

Dennis and Lynne purchased this chateau / country house in 2007

Why Dennis and Lynne chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

Purchased for weekend getaways from the hustle and bustle of big city life. Within easy driving distance of home, but offers an experience that is truly transcendent.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Peaceful and quiet, the cabin provides a break from the heat and high humidity of Charlotte summers. An amazing place to watch snow fall while nestled in front of the warm fireplace. Summer activities include hiking area trails or just walking the neighborhood, playing in the park in downtown Blowing Rock; or horseback riding. Winters are spent skiing, shopping, and enjoying each others' company. The wraparound porch offers some amazing views. The wood construction of the A-frame house is rustic, solid, and charming.

Can't recommend it

  • 2 of 5

We stayed here for 8 days in early May and had a very mixed reaction to the place. The good things first. The house has a nice location near Boone in a gated community, very quiet yet reasonably convenient to area attractions. The access road is steep, narrow, and curvy, but it is paved. We liked the layout of the house and the absence of tacky decorations. That said, the house is clearly a well-worn rental that’s suffered from neglect of basic maintenance, and for us it threatened to become the rental from hell. When we arrived, we found that the electrics in the living room weren’t working (that included the lights, the TV, the Wifi, and the heater). We located the panel and got it working by flipping all the breakers. But that was only a temporary fix, as the breakers continued to trip several times a day…until finally we lost all power. After repeated calls to Dennis, the owner, several staff members from the property management office at the community took over (they were great, by the way), and an electrician quickly sorted things out. Good thing, because we were on the verge of cutting our losses and bailing out. Even after the repairs, we had to run the Monitor heater with an extension cord because there was one receptacle behind the heater that the electrician couldn't get to. With the major problem solved (four days into our stay), the house served us pretty well. But among other things, we noted the following: 1.The water line to the water heater in the basement/crawlspace (where the breaker panel was located) was leaking and spewing water all over. A plumber fixed this before we got the electrics fixed, but the overhead insulation remained dripping wet.

2.The foundation was badly cracked (didn’t directly affect us but indicative of neglect).

3.The fridge was barely adequate. Freezer wouldn’t make ice cubes until we managed to remove a big sheet of ice that had formed in it. (We had to buy new ice cube trays as the ones in there were cracked and leaking.) Fridge section wouldn’t cool properly even on highest setting.

4.Space heaters in bedrooms lacked dials to adjust thermostats. Dennis said to use a screwdriver (we never found one in the house). So… you take your chances with this place. Some people have obviously had positive experiences here, and the place does have its good points. But unless the owners start doing a better job of monitoring conditions here and keeping up with basic maintenance, it’s a risky prospect.

Owner's Response: We hate to hear that a guest has had a less then pleasant stay..especially when the only way we hear it is through a negative review. Was made aware of the electrical issue by the guest, and scrambled the fine staff at Hound Ears to address the problem...which was the T&P valve on the water heater popping off and spraying water under the house. We are in the process of remediating the issues with this, but anyone's water heater can have an issue at any time. Our focus was on solving the problem with minimal impact to our guest, who stayed (as he noted in his review). When I offered to come up from our home two hours away, I was told that wasn't necessary. The wall-mounted heaters have knobs which were stripped and had to be special ordered. In the meanwhile, we have asked that guests use a screwdriver which (cleaner verified) is in the "junk drawer" in the kitchen. Alternately, there are plug-in space heaters which can be used. The fridge/freezer was brand new last summer. Apparently, someone had set the freezer to "max" and caused some ice build up. To our knowledge, this has been resolved by turning the thermostat down. Finally, the foundation of the house is not cracked. At all, in any place. Some stucco has delaminated. There are zero structural issues with the house. This is an older A-frame in a quaint setting. We make no representations that anyone who stays with us is booking passage on the Queen Mary. That said, we strive to ensure that our guests are as comfortable as they can be; the large number of repeat guests we receive is confirmation of that fact. Usually, we would ask a guest to give us another chance. But this review is a gross misrepresentation of both our home and the events which transpired during the guest's stay. Further, at no time did the guest express this level of displeasure despite multiple contacts over phone and text while addressing the water heater issue. We certainly hope that folks will be willing to make up their own minds regarding the charm and coziness of the cabin.

Our family had a fantastic stay. The owners were very accommodating and were available to answer any questions we had. We have recommended this rental to several of our friends and are already planning our next trip back. 😀

Excellent Customer service

  • 5 of 5

I had a reservation to rent this cabin during the third week of October but could not make it due to some other scheduling issues. The owner Mr.Dennis has been very understanding about the situation and has given me an option for an alternate date. This is great customer service and I would rate this cabin highly for that. I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a great play to stay in the Boone area and Mr.Dennis is a wonderful person and very nice to work with.

Cute Cabin but too many problems to recommend

  • 2 of 5

This cabin is nicely designed. The biggest issue we had was with electrical problems. Twice during our stay we were without lights in the big upstairs bedroom and the kitchen. My husband spent approximately four hours trying to get the power back on. We think the problem might have been due to a light switch that was hanging out of the wall upstairs, because sparks would fly out of it sometimes when you turned it on. We contacted the owners both times and their directions were to unplug everything and reset the breakers which worked sporadically. It was advertised as having firewood underneath the house, but there was none. There was also no detergent to run the dishwasher, no dish washing detergent, and only 1 1/2 rolls of toilet tissue per bathroom for 4 adults and 1 child for 3 nights. Many of the pots and pans had not been thoroughly cleaned and still had food scum on the bottom of the pan. It is such a cute cabin and comfortably decorated. It is too bad that it was not better maintained and prepared for guests. We liked the cabin but because of the above issues, we would not recommend renting it.

Owner's Response: Regretfully, the guest did not contact us about anything other than the electrical "issue," which is typically caused by plugging multiple space heaters into a single circuit...a problem that would exist in any home. We provide sufficient consumables for a guest to begin their stay, but cannot anticipate how many rolls of toilet paper someone may use. As noted in our guest agreement, our house is not a full-service hotel. That said, an absence of supplies can be remedied if we are made aware of the shortage. Again, we ask that guests make us aware of any issue or concern immediately, and give us the chance to correct it early in the stay rather than posting a poor review after the fact. We do extend a 10% discount to repeat guests, and would welcome this reviewer back with one free night if they would be willing to give us another opportunity.

Wonderful vacation stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband, two teens, and two dogs stayed for several days in the spring and loved our vacation time! We felt like we were in our own home, just cozy and comfortable. We were close to all of our favorite stops along the parkway and in Blowing Rock for day hikes. We'll definitely return for our annual mountain pilgrimage.

Unsafe oven

  • 1 of 5

I usually have had very positive experiences using vrbo rentals but this cabin was musty and moldy upon arrival. There was black mold in the master bath that extended all along the tub. The owners should invest in a dehumidifier as the Carolina's received a lot of rain this summer. Lots of cobwebs and dust bunnies. But the worst part is the oven which is completely unsafe. The oven door doesn't stay down when you open the door. My husband got his hand burned. Also the owner says to decrease the cooking temperature and timing because the oven is bit "tricky". We cooked a beef tenderloin in record time but the tinfoil we used burned and filled the cabin up with smoke. We were monitoring the oven the whole time. Contacted the owner upon return and her response was that she would contact the cleaning company. Nothing about the oven concerns. We won't return to their cabin.

Owner's Response: Apparently the thermostat in the oven stopped working; this was certainly the first complaint of this nature we have received. We have purchased a new stainless steel range to address this. Unfortunately, this guest did not contact us during their stay. We urge all of our guests to contact us the moment an issue arises so that we may address it during the stay.

Car: necessary

Hound Ears Club is a gated residential community. Situated just off the Blue Ridge Parkway and adjacent to Moses Cone Park, the neighborhood offers privately maintained roads and 24 hour security in an amazingly serene setting.

Our home is convenient to downtown Blowing Rock, with its municipal park, quaint shopping and fine dining options. It also is just minutes from Boone; attractions there include collegiate sports at Appalachian State University and a diverse culinary scene. Valle Crucis Park is an amazing gem tucked behind the original Mast General Store, where kids can run and play while parents walk the track. Great base for exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway, whether for a scenic drive or to undertake hikes from easy to challenging. Walking to the top of Hound Ears is a challenge in and of itself; a stunning view of Grandfather Mountain is among the rewards of the walk. Ski Appalachian and Sugar Mountain ski slopes are just a brief car ride away. Tweetsie Railroad and The Blowing Rock are family-focused attractions nearby.

Our house offers a beautiful place to watch the leaves change in autumn, a welcome respite from the heat and humidity of summer, and a cozy place to curl up by the fire and read as snow falls around you in winter. Four wheel drive vehicles are not required to access the house nor the amenities the area has to offer.
