I purchased this property 18 years ago and spent two years restoring the 3 level structure and planting the gardens. I was honored to have it featured in the 2007 Historic Tour of San Diego homes... I am also a Realtor and home design & garden Consultant. Began home remodeling homes 35 years ago. Am happy to offer insider tips on great places to visit/best local restaurants, have shown real estate and sold several homes to visiting guests, as well. Dozens have become annual guests, reserving weeks or months here annually, becoming close personal friends.
Kent purchased this House in 1998
Why Kent chose North Park
Covering 3 residential lots -- the mature gardens offer a sense of peaceful seclusion rarely found this close to Downtown San Diego.
What makes this House unique
The expansive gardens and our central location are among its special features. The unexpected scale of the property, well disguised from the street, startles most visitors. A special treat are the visiting wildlife - whether roosting in trees or drinking from the fountains... hawks, owls, parrots, squirrels, hummingbirds, even an occasional fox.

A Gem in the Heart of San Diego
This lovely property is spacious, comfortable and quiet; the perfect home away for our three-week stay in San Diego. The suite is spotless and well maintained and the presence of an on-sight owner/manager was a bonus. Kent was on hand to welcome us and always available if we had questions. We found the posting photos and property description wholly accurate – and, if anything, understated. Appliances are quality, furniture substantial and everything is in perfect operating order.
To our great surprise and delight, we found the house surrounded by a mature landscaped garden that rewarded us with beautiful garden views from every window. Even at night its presence is apparent, with spotlights accenting various garden features. So nice! We also loved the fountain in our private courtyard that lulled us to sleep each night and in the morning drew hummingbirds. We could watch them bathe while sipping coffee on the balcony just a few feet above. I mean, this place is special!
And all of this is but a few minutes’ drive to Balboa Park, museums, restaurants, supermarket, downtown and Old Town and the interstate that connects to everything. So conveniently located! Timken Museum in Balboa Park is a jewel; free admission and an app that narrates its small but stellar collection makes for a nice morning.
We found THE best tacos on the planet at The Taco Stand in La Jolla. Once you eat there, you’ll understand why there’s an almost ever-present line. It moves quickly, so don’t give up. I liked the chicken taco with cilantro and chipotle sauce. Another great lunch stop is Oscar’s Mexican Seafood just down from Ralph’s supermarket on University. The Fisherman’s Torta is their #1 item and enough for two. Don’t miss it! Look for house made sauces in the beverage cooler.
Bottom line, this is a great place to call home, both inside and out. Lucky are the guests who can secure a booking here.
A tropical paradise. Quiet and private.
We had a wonderful stay. The access to this property in North Park neighborhood was initially appeared to us rather confusing because this area of San Diego is full of small gullies and dead-end road. We quickly figured out our way around to various cites in the city. It has a direct access to University St. and Hillcrest neighborhood full of stores and restaurants, and once our landlord Kent shows us a short cut to 6th St, the major NS street, anywhere we had to go in the city was 10-15 minutes away. Every room in our second floor unit, even the bathroom, had a view of the garden densely planted with tropical plants. We had our own private courtyard and a balcony looking over a beautiful stone fountain with the perpetually bubbling water where humming birds came to bath. Our Craftsman style interior was spacious: a large living room with comfortable seatings, a bedroom with ample space around a king-side bed furnished with a writing table, a chest of drawers and armouir. The kitchen was off the living room; a dining table with two chairs, a small utility island in the center and appliances against two walls. Every thing was fully functional. Because the weather was cooler than we had expected we had to turn on the central heater, which provided the warmth especially in the bedroom and bathroom. It was an ideal accommodation for our six day stay in the city. We hope to return to San Diego again and, we would enjoy staying here.
Awesome Home by Balboa Park
My wife and I had a wonderful stay at this remarkable tropical property. Kent gave us a valuable orientation of his 1900's Mission style home and area. This home is central to all parts of San Diego. You're very close to the world famous Zoo, Sea World, Gastown, Old San Diego, Midway and the beaches. The home is very comfortable with all amenities including washer and dryer. Thanks, Kent, for sharing your tropical oasis with us. Highly recommended!
Thanks again for your recent stay and the excellent review. Much appreciated!!
Great location, spacious, and private.
One of the best stays that we've ever had! Only a short walk to the zoo, Balboa park, and local sites. Easy parking. The suite was well-kept, easy to get to, and centrally located. Kent, the owner was extremely accessible and very nice. We would highly recommend this location to couples wanting to visit San Diego.
Thanks so much for the great review. It was a pleasure meeting you, and having you here at the property!
Exceeded our expectations
The property is really nice, well furnished and well taken care of. The area was perfect for us, close to Balboa Park, the Zoo and within walking distance to quite a few places to eat and get a drink. The big plus for us was a pair of bicycles available for our use. We are avid bicyclists so we peddled to most of our destinations. We rode downtown, explored the park and lots of the surrounding areas. Our week went by way too quickly and if we visit San Diego again one of Kent's properties in this little compound will be our first choice.
Stay here while in San Diego!
My husband and I booked this unit fairly late so I was surprised it was even available - especially given all of the previous 'excellent' reviews. And it did not disappoint! Kent met us at the door and showed us around the property which was absolutely stunning. Attention to every detail, our spacious top floor apartment had everything we needed. The in-unit laundry was handy to have as was the spacious parking. A quiet oasis not far from the Park, we found it to be centrally located to everything we wanted to do. University Street had numerous bars and restaurants. Lots of options. Great farmer's market on Thursday evening for fresh produce and other goodies. Would recommend a car if you want to sight see, but the buses seemed to be easy to navigate. Definitely spend a day at the San Diego Zoo and touring the many museums of Balboa Park. Old Town was entertaining for an afternoon. There really wasn't a park of San Diego we didn't like. When we return we hope to be able to stay here again. Thanks Kent for sharing your beautiful property with us!
