I purchased this property 18 years ago and spent two years restoring the 3 level structure and planting the gardens. I was honored to have it featured in the 2007 Historic Tour of San Diego homes... I am also a Realtor and home design & garden Consultant. Began home remodeling homes 35 years ago. Am happy to offer insider tips on great places to visit/best local restaurants, have shown real estate and sold several homes to visiting guests, as well. Dozens have become annual guests, reserving weeks or months here annually, becoming close personal friends.
Kent purchased this house in 1998
Covering 3 residential lots -- the mature gardens offer a sense of peaceful seclusion rarely found this close to Downtown San Diego.
The expansive gardens and our central location are among its special features. The unexpected scale of the property, well disguised from the street, startles most visitors. A special treat are the visiting wildlife - whether roosting in trees or drinking from the fountains... hawks, owls, parrots, squirrels, hummingbirds, even an occasional fox.
Each time my wife & I return to this perfectly appointed and warm Craftsman home in the perfect location (minutes to Balboa Park, Coronado, Hillcrest, Downtown, shopping -- everything!) we feel like second-home owners ourselves, as we sip our coffee in our private hummingbird- and fountain-filled garden. Seriously, we dream about this place when we're not there! And the bed is so perfect, we're getting a duplicate for our own home. Robert & Linda, Bozeman Montana
This is our third stay here and we couldn't be happier. Not only does the suite look exactly like the pictures but it is comfortable, in a quiet neighborhood and spacious. It is very close to Balboa Park. Kent is a wonderful host and always helpful when you have questions, but never intrusive. You will be wowed by the outdoor space as well. We have recommended the treetop suite to friends, who will be staying here in February.
Delightfully comfortable and private hideaway one block from the park and within walking distance of restaurants. we have a history with this apartment - parents lived here for 18 years and the new owner has made incredible improvements. We cannot wait to return!!
What a pleasant surprise! Everything was perfect for our week stay. VERY comfortable bed and living area. We enjoyed cooking our own breakfast most days and were within walking distance to great breakfast places, also. The location was central to all we wanted to see and do. No matter where we were, we could be "home" in 15 min. The suite was clean and everything we needed was provided, even access to washer/dryer. Loved the neighborhood and the 'compound" is as beautiful and private as you will find anywhere. Kent, thanks for sharing!!
This time for Comic Con I needed to get out of the Gaslamp, and this was the perfect retreat. While I was initially concerned about transportation, I found Uber to be swift with pick-ups, and about a $10-12, 5-10 minute ride to the convention center. I did also get a rental car, and had plenty of parking available to me. I was a quick ride away from Trader Joe's and Whole Foods and Ralph's, and a host of dining locations. The area is safe and secure, and right off beautiful Balboa Park. A great place for a stroll!
The courtyard is inviting and spacious, cool in the mornings and evenings, and the balcony overlooking it is a perfect place for morning coffee as well as a night cap. You can listen to the bubbling fountain as you chillax, and even as you sleep, if you leave the windows comfortably open.
I really enjoyed the fine Craftsman detailing in this place, it has stood the test of time, and I felt like I was coming to a real home every night, and pretty chauffed about it. The place is as large as it looks, the AC works well, the breezes are nice, the host is generous, and the wifi solid. A great stay, can't wait to stay again!
We found our host, space, location, and weather to be perfect. We enjoyed making breakfast and eating it on the deck overlooking our personal garden. After a fun day of exploring it was great to come back to our "home" and relax in the large, but cozy living room. Everything we wanted to see and do was so convenient. We are already making plans to return to San Diego and stay here. After all, there is no place like "home."
We were thrilled with the space and the location of this lovely unit. The neighborhood was safe and walkable. There is great freeway access, and it is close to good grocery stores. We could easily get to all our favorite haunts in Hillcrest, made it to Coronado Beach in minutes, and it was a hop skip and a jump to Balboa Park and Zoo. The living area and bedroom were spacious. The bed and furniture comfortable. The outdoor space was ample and private. The owner has lovingly restored this Craftsman bungalow and lives on the property, which has lush landscaping and very private grounds. He was very gracious. We would definitely return.
Historic Craftsman compound adjacent 1200 acre Balboa Park and just 5 minutes from Downtown, 10 minutes from Coronado beaches. An ideal central Location!
