Kulalani is a beautifully landscaped, peaceful, private, gated neighborhood situated within the Mauna Lani Resort. It is a 25 minute drive north from Kona International Airport, a 10 minute walk to the closest beach, and a 10 minute walk to the closest grocery store.

Our 1,600 sq. ft. home is perfect for 2 to 4 adults who are seeking total relaxation. It is also suitable for a family of four. ( There is a pack n play available upon request.) The master bedroom (California King) is on the second floor along with a generous en-suite and private lanai overlooking the 5th green of the Mauna Lani North Golf Course and the Kohala mountains. This is the perfect place to enjoy your morning cup of Kona coffee. The second bedroom (Queen Size) is on the first floor with an adjacent full bathroom. This bedroom has an additional flat screen TV.

Our townhouse is professionally decorated and maintained to the highest standards. The 20-foot ceiling in the living room opens to the kitchen and dining area. The covered, wrap-around lanai overlooks the 5th green of the Mauna Lani North Golf Course. We never tire of the unobstructed mountain view and total privacy. There is a full outdoor kitchen on the 331 sq ft lanai with a Viking BBQ and wet bar.

It’s important to us that our guests enjoy a wonderful vacation experience during their stay in Hawaii. In order to ensure this, all the necessary amenities are provided. We also entrust our Property Manager, John, to take care of our guests. If you have any questions about the Big Island – he’s your guy. John is only a call away. His response time is so fast he has had guests ask if he lives in the neighborhood!

The Recreation Center in Kulalani is one of the best on the Big Island. There you will find 2.5 acres of beautiful gardens surrounding a lagoon pool, Keiki pool, a half-lap adult pool, two Jacuzzis, a fully-equipped fitness center and a gathering pavilion with outdoor kitchen. The gardens in this area are so beautiful that our daughter held her wedding reception in the Gathering Pavilion in 2013. Our home is located directly across from the entrance to the Recreation Center. It only takes 2 minutes to get from poolside to the fridge to replenish the ice in your drink!

Access to the Owner’s Beach Club is available for your use. This private, gated beach has a safe swimming cove, lifeguards, restaurant, and some of the best snorkeling on the Big Island. There are lounge chairs provided so you only need to pack towels and the cooler when you visit.

The Mauni Lani Bay Hotel and the Fairmont Orchid Hotel are located within the Mauni Lani Resort. The nearby 'Shops of Mauni Lani' have several restaurants, art galleries, gift shops, free entertainment, and a full grocery store with deli, bakery, meat and seafood departments. The Mauna Lani Resort is home to two Championship golf courses, the Francis H. I'i Brown North and South Courses.

About John Landers

My husband and I were born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. We have three daughters who are all attending universities. Over the past 15 years we found ourselves traveling to and from Hawaii and just could not stay away. We always dreamed about owning a place in paradise.

Now that we are approaching those 'golden years' that everyone refers to, we thought it would be a good time to make our dream come true by owning a home on the Big Island and traveling back and forth as we have always done.

Why John Landers chose Kulalani

We chose to live on the Kohala Coast because of the white sandy beaches that receive less than 10 inches of rain each year. We love the Hawaiian people, culture, food, weather, and the history. We consider ourselves as residents of Hawaii even though we are not there year-round. We are offering you our home and hope that your family will enjoy the same pleasures that our family does when we are there.

What makes this townhome unique

Kulalani is a place to heal the mind, spirit, body and soul.

This is our typical day in Kulalani:

We start our day with local fresh fruit and coffee on the 'garden lanai'.

Next, it's to the 'fitness center' for a quick work out or swim.

A picnic lunch is quickly assembled and we are off to one of our many 'favorite beaches'.

In the mid-afternoon (after we've had enough sand), we return to the 'lagoon pool' with a book and have another swim.

'Happy Hour' typically starts around 4:00 p.m. and gently takes us into the 'sunset' part of the day.

Now it's back to the lanai for 'catch of the day' fresh off the BBQ.

Retirement to the upstairs lanai is our next stop, where we sip our 'Special Coffees' and assume 'Star Watch' position.

Bed time usually comes early so that we can . . . . (brace yourself)

DO IT ALL AGAIN TOMORROW!!!

After our arrival on the Big Island we followed the description to this house. We stepped in and we couldn't believe that THIS should be our place to be for the following 6 days. Wow. This is such a beautiful house with all we needed and more. It fulfilled all our dreams and we felt at home from the first moment. To wake up in the upper level is amazing. We love this place. I would rate this experience with 6 of 5 stars, if possible. We would definitely love to return. Mahalo nui to the owners for sharing this place and to John for caring.

Big Island Vacation

This is a beautiful luxury unit. Clean and decorated in a lovely plantation style. We had 4 adults staying and we had plenty of room and privacy. The kitchen has everything you need if you want to cook as well as a big BBQ on the patio. We loved sitting on the balcony in the morning to watch the sun rise and listening to the birds. When we arrived it was raining and we got lost in the complex, call John and he answered on the first ring and was more than happy to help us with directions. This unit is a short walk to the pool. Shopping and restaurants are close by with the Waiokola Village just a short drive away. We highly recommend trying Lava Lava restaurant for dinner, great food and entertainment.

Lovely house, but we will not be returning

Mauna Lani is a wonderful spot for a beach vacation. The beach club is fabulous, and the pool here is very nice. You couldn't have a better location for the pool, it is just across the street. We stayed here with another couple and our 8 month old daughter. The rooms are nice, we stayed in the upstairs and had plenty of room for a travel crib, and the bathroom had a great shower and jacuzzi tub. Although you will find most of what you need, we started referring to it as the 'minimally stocked house'. It needs more plates and beach towels and those sort of things; we either hand washed some plates for dinner or ran a half empty dishwasher. We liked having the snorkeling gear, and it would have been nice to know they had a high chair and pack and play so I could have packed less.

The reason we won't be back is the air conditioning. The owners mandate setting it no lower that 75 degrees and will reset it if you do. There are sensors on the doors that will shut off the air conditioning and they did not trigger correctly, so my husband had to call the property manager to figure out why it was 79 degrees at 9pm. 75 degrees is not cool enough for a two story house, it was hot upstairs and my daughter who sleeps 7pm to 7am at home kept waking up in the night because she was uncomfortable, which is not fun while on vacation. We ended up leaving the windows open at night and that varied from too hot to too cold, it was also hard to get a good cross breeze going. I checked with friends who have rented other houses in Mauna Lani and the standard is 71 degrees, and no one has ever had it reset.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review of Kulalani 401. We appreciate and understand your concerns and always do our best in keeping high standards at Kulalani 401. John was very quick in responding to each of your concerns when you contacted him. In your arrival pack you received, the AC temperature setting is mentioned. If you read the arrival directions, you would have read the part about the AC settings. 75 degrees is plenty cool enough especially in a 84 degree climate. Electricity being the highest cost in the nation, we ask each of our guests to please be respectful and conscientious. The outside temperature of 66 degrees in the evenings before 7 PM is plenty cool for the townhouse. Leaving the ceiling fans on with the windows and doors open would more than adequately cool the entire house. The AC was set at 75 when you contacted John about the temperature being at 79 inside. He did mention to you about the sensors on the doors and windows and to please check them. The sensors are there so the AC doesn't continuously run when the doors and windows are left open, which is not being efficient in use. You told John you found a sensor that was not straight. This only gets knocked off alignment after a door is slammed, which explains the broken handle that we found upon your departure. The other issues you brought up with not plenty of dishes, glasses, silverware, kitchenware for your stay is questionable. There is plenty of everything for use on a daily basis for the 4 adults you stated would be staying according to your reservation. You didn't mention the blinds that you broke while here and called John each time there was a problem. They were taken care of immediately the very next day. You also failed to mention the artwork that was pulled off the wall that needed to be put back up. Sorry you didn't mention to John about the lack of beach towels. He would have had them there the same day if he knew about them. We are sorry that you didn't read In the amenities listed on this VRBO site, that we do have listed a high chair and pack n play as available. More communication from you to the property manager would have been helpful to make your stay more enjoyable. Aloha and Mahalo!

Another Great Stay in Kulalani

The unit is very clean, well appointed and has a beautiful view of the golf course. We have stayed here several times. We like the proximity to the pools and the totally private lanai. There are two bikes for getting around the resort. John is the property manager. He lives close by and is only a phone call away. There are fabulous beaches just a 5 minute drive either north or south on the highway. Kua Bay, Mauna Kea, Beach Club to name just a few. We have already booked our next stay.

Excellent week in Kona

We have been to the Big Island before, this time is even more enjoyable. Beautiful location and property. Everything described was correct. There are some many fantastic snorkelling spots nearby. Perfect weather and friendly people. Will like to come back in 2018.

Perfect place for us!

This home was clean, comfortable and convenient! The views from the lanais were nice, the beds were comfortable, the kitchen was well equipped, the grill was great, the pools and gym were terrific and the private beach was super!

John, the property manager, answered all our questions immediately!!

We would definitely stay here again!!!
