4 bedrooms, 3 baths, sleeps 8; comfortable family home with incredible views
About Suzy, Owner
My husband and I purchased this beautiful farmland property on our honeymoon! He was a new Assistant Professor in M.E. at VATech and I was a late-blooming student in University Honors/English. We were blessed with the birth of our two sons six and nine years later. We built our new family home, now Blackberry Morning Retreat, in 1988. Our family shared many wonderful years together in this sacred place. We are all VATech Hokies: Hal, M.E. 1960; Suzy, U.H./English 1974; Brooks, U.H/M.E. 1997; Shane, U.H./Biology & Political Science 2003.
Suzy, Owner purchased this House in 1969
Why Suzy, Owner chose Newport
Hal & I fell in love with the farm on our first visit - on our honeymoon - looking for a place to make our home together. On that beautiful Spring day in April, 1969, we walked together up the mountain, sat on a big rock and looked down the valley at that incredible view - and knew this was where we wanted to be - forever.
What makes this House unique
Stunningly beautiful views and wonderfully peaceful environment on a private farm (268 acres) - with a contemporary cedar, fieldstone & glass house that wraps you up in comfort - adjoining the Jefferson National Forest and the Appalachian Trail, yet convenient to the people & culture of Blacksburg & VATech.

My family and I had a wonderful time during our visit, and loved getting to know Suzy throughout the rental process. We could not have asked for a better experience, and cannot wait to return!!
Our Virginia Tech home away from home
We rented this mountain retreat multiple times over our sons four year stint at Virginia Tech. This final stay was for graduation week. The home is a home. The view is unmatched - looking down into the valley and looking up-hill over the pasture. You are truly alone in a peaceful setting up in the mountains west of Blacksburg. Campus is about 20 minutes away - and since you are entering from the West - you do not run into the I-81 traffic - a great time saver to and from VT events. If your into hiking - The Appalachian Train is a short walk away. Kelly's Knob is not far.
We are happy for our graduate. However, we are sad to leave Blacksburg and Virginia Tech. We are also sad to say good bye to Blackberry Morning. It truly is a home away from home.
Beautiful, serene, peaceful.....a perfect getaway!!
Suzy, you have been the most hospitable hostess I have ever had for a rental, thank you for your detailed correspondence and the great efforts you made to make our weekly stay for eight older hiking ladies just wonderful. We truly could not get enough of the views from every window and door in the house. Even the drive the house brought ooohs and aaahs each day - it never got old and we did it a lot!
We really appreciated the fabulous space with the kitchen, dining room, and living area all in one open space so we could visit non-stop while getting ready, cooking, eating, and just playing games at night. There were also plenty of quiet spaces to retreat to when we just wanted some alone time. It is the perfect set-up. We loved all the convenient bathrooms and that you could accommodate us by turning the king size beds into really comfortable twin beds - perfect!
We were a bit disappointed by the cleanliness and upkeep of the house, which is why only four stars, but the beauty of the home and the surroundings truly did overshadow that disappointment.
Thank you again for hosting us ladies and allowing me some much needed time away with convenient access to the hiking trails. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who needs a quiet getaway!!
Laura and her hiking friends!
Thank you for your kind words and I am so glad you and your hiking friends had a “just wonderful” stay at Blackberry Morning Retreat! It warms my heart to have guests who love being there!
As I shared with you, I was more than appalled, and I sincerely apologize to you and your friends again, that you found the house anything less than pristine for your stay. I have strongly re-emphasized to my cleaning person how important it is that the Retreat be spotlessly clean and fresh for every guest stay. I am adamant about cleanliness because I would want that for myself wherever I might be staying. I have had her do an extra thorough cleaning and will be monitoring more closely. I can’t tell you how sorry I am that didn’t happen for you!
I thought that some of your experiences while staying at Blackberry Morning Retreat would be of interest to other guests who might stay, so - with your permission - I am sharing excerpts from your emails:
“I got back home last night from our delightful 7-night stay at Blackberry Morning Retreat. It truly was a lovely and serene setting.
Each morning we were greeted with amazing views out of the large windows and the views were amazing all day long. We saw some deer and the cows and lots of lovely birds. I loved walking around the yard and checking out the trees and flowers. The little creek was great, our Portuguese Water Dog love it.
A number of people commented about how comfortable the beds were. We spent almost all our time in the open area with kitchen, dining, and living area, so we could all talk, help, and share. We did cook in 6 nights and the kitchen was well stocked and we loved that all 8 of us could eat together. We found everything we needed.
We stopped at lovely covered bridges, for ice-cream and other things at Scoops in Pembroke twice, friends hiked the Cascades Falls and some of us stopped at Dismal Falls… We also stopped twice at the Walker Amish Market on Rt 42 and got some great deals.
It was a very active week. Everyone and everything was wonderful.”
Thank you again for choosing Blackberry Morning!
A Perfect Respite from Winter
We wanted to escape the bitter grasp of winter and be closer to family for a few weeks and Blackberry Morning Retreat was the perfect place. The home is well appointed and very clean and comfortable. We were blessed with spring-like weather when we first arrived and took advantage of the proximity to the Appalachian Trail for some hiking. Not far from the home is PandapasPond, a peaceful and beautiful hiking area where our dog enjoyed swimming with the geese.
If you are looking for a quiet and restful home you will find it here. We spent hours in the main room mesmerized by the incredible view out the wall of windows. It is southwest Virginia at its best!
Suzy is a wonderful hostess and made us feel very welcome. She made sure we had everything we needed. I would highly recommend her home. You are a short drive to Blacksburg and Christiansburg and yet when you are there they feel like a million miles away.
We spent a wonderful month here and hope to return soon!
Thanks so much, Eileen, for your lovely review! I'm delighted you had a "wonderful month" at Blackberry Morning Retreat. And I hope you will "return soon!" Have a beautiful Summer! Suzy
We spent 4 days at Blackberry Morning and it was just what we were hoping for. The house is very comfortable and cozy and had everything we needed and more. The setting of the house and the views are simply spectacular, and we were rewarded with a beautiful sunset over the mountains. The Appalachian trail is about a mile away uphill and you can explore both sides of the trail, with Kelly’s knob being the nicest path. We had one rainy that we enjoyed indoors, just relaxing and looking out of the windows, using the TV room (there is a nice collection of movies in the house), and reading by the fire. It is a fantastic place to stay with kids. Expansive grounds and a small creek that cuts through it provide hours of entertainment and exploration. Although you feel away from it all, we found the location very convenient and close to groceries (20 min away). There is a smaller shop less than 10 min away that has the basics and fresh fruits. The owner was very responsive and nice. We would love to go back in the spring.
Thank you so much for your gratifying review! I'm so pleased that Blackberry Morning Retreat was "just what you were hoping for" and that you found so much to enjoy during your stay!
There really isn't anyplace as special as Blackberry Morning, is there?! :)
It was my pleasure to have you and your family I would be delighted to have you back in the Spring!
Blacksburg & Virginia Tech: Just 14 miles, yet a world apart! In the New River Valley of the Blue Ridge Highlands. Blackberry Morning is a stunningly beautiful mountain retreat on 268 private acres, so wonderfully quiet and peaceful. Gather family & friends to enjoy great times just being together, to attend Virginia Tech graduations, football games & reunions, or to experience fun outdoor adventures.
You are going to love being here! Listen to the creek flowing & the birds singing and the breeze blowing. Be awed by the sunsets down the valley & the brilliant stars in the night-sky. In the greatroom, enjoy conversations by the fire, around the table, or while cooking in the well-equipped kitchen. In the separate library/media room, read a book from the large collection or watch sports or a movie on the flat-screen TV.
You are welcome to hike anywhere on the land and enjoy the spectacular views from every vantage point. Picnic on the meadows & explore the creeks & park-like woods.
You can often see whitetail deer in the open pastures around the house early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The wild turkeys are elusive, but you can sometimes see them in the pastures or crossing the road. You might even get to see a black bear. Or a timber rattler. Please be aware that all of these occasionally venture into our yard, sometimes close to the house.
You can hike the Appalachian Trail at the top of our property. It's a 2.5 mile moderate-hike to Kelly Knob overlook. Other nearby hikes are Angel's Rest, Wind Rock and Dragon's Tooth.
The Cascades Nat'l Recreation Site waterfall is just 10 miles West -- a great place to picnic and fly-fish for native trout. There are other wild & stocked trout streams nearby, including Big Stony Creek.
The New River has canoeing, kayaking & tubing less than 15 miles West. And there's white-water rafting in West Virginia on the New & the Gauley, about two hours away, and you can bungee-jump off the New River Gorge Bridge in WVA.
There is also snow skiing at Winter Place and Snowshoe in W.V., one-two hours West.
You can go sailing, motor-boating, water-skiing, swimming & picnicking at Claytor Lake, just an hour away. Stop by Mikey's 7th in Newport and pick up a picnic lunch to take with you.
And be sure to plan a special gourmet dinner at the Palisades Restaurant in Eggleston while you're here. Great fun!
Blackberry Morning is just 14 miles, 25 minutes, across two mountains to Blacksburg & VATech University where there are all kinds of things to do that you typically find in a university town.
Enjoy VATech sports, graduations, reunions & special events. Picnic by the Duck Pond, walk on the paved trails around campus, go to concerts on campus and at the smaller venue of the Lyric Theater downtown (old, restored movie-house). And there is a brand-new Performing Arts Center that you must experience.
There are side-walk cafes like Gillie's & Caba Fish Taco where you can hear local music, & great local restaurants like Bull & Bones and Zeppoli's, as well as favorite chains.
There are movie theaters and downtown small-shops & mall shopping.
There's a year-round indoor pool at the Blacksburg Recreation Center on our side of Blacksburg, where they also have basketball courts, tennis courts, a skateboard ramp, & a hand-in-hand playground on a large open field with picnic shelters. They have great 4th of July fireworks there, too!
