New Castle House Rental Photos and Description

4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, sleeps 8

Only 14 miles, 25 minutes, to Blacksburg & Virginia Tech. Yet a world apart! In the New River Valley of the Blue Ridge Highlands on 268 private acres. Spectacular views of beautiful surrounding mountains & rolling valley below. Experience stilled time in the wonderfully peaceful solitude of nature. And the warm, inviting welcome of the comfortable, fully-furnished & well-equipped, cedar, fieldstone & glass house. Such a great place to gather family & friends for VATech sports events, graduations, class reunions, & moving in your freshman; perfect for your family reunions, bride or groom's retreat, honeymoons; & awesome outdoor adventures nearby. Or just come and enjoy a relaxing & refreshing vacation with family and friends!

You are going to love being here! It is so very beautiful & so wonderfully peaceful! Listen to the creek flowing & the birds singing and the breeze blowing. The sunsets down the valley & the brilliant stars in the night-sky are awe-inspiring. You can hike anywhere on the land & there are spectacular views from every vantage point. Picnic on the meadows & explore the creeks & park-like woods.

Please Note: Britt Boucher, a naturalist/forester, and his ever-faithful fielddog, Jenna, are currently residing in the studio apartment in the basement of the house. The apartment has a separate entrance and is not connected to the main quarters. And Britt will always respect your privacy at the retreat. Britt is a joy to know and we’re lucky to count him as a friend, as well as to have him advising us in forest and farm management of Clover Hollow Farm. Britt's Bio: Britt is a private Forest and Farm Manager working for the planet to help maintain our farmland and forest health. A farmer & naturalist that spends most of his time “playing” in the dirt, growing food, assessing plant-community health, “listening” to trees, and counseling the forest. Like all true naturalists- quiet, humble, accommodating - he will be respectful of your desire for privacy. But, if you wish, and can catch him… he is always delighted to talk about farming and forest care... and the sounds of the forest at night.

While at Blackberry Morning, experience fun outdoor adventures! -- You can often see whitetail deer in the open pastures around the house early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The wild turkeys are elusive, but you can sometimes see them in the pastures or crossing the road. You can hike the Appalachian Trail at the top of our property. It's a 2.5 mile moderate-hike to Kelly Knob overlook. Other nearby hikes are Angel's Rest, Wind Rock and Dragon's Tooth. The Cascades Nat'l Recreation Site waterfall is just 10 miles West -- a great place to picnic and fly-fish for native trout. There are other wild & stocked trout streams nearby, including Big Stony Creek. The New River has canoeing, kayaking & tubing less than 15 miles West. And there's white-water rafting in West Virginia on the New & the Gauley, about two hours away, and you can bungee-jump off the New River Gorge Bridge in WVA, too. There is also skiing at Winter Place and Snowshoe in W.V., one-two hours West. You can go sailing, motor-boating, water-skiing, swimming & picnicking at Claytor Lake, just an hour away. Stop by Mikey's 7th in Newport and pick up a picnic lunch to take with you. And plan a special gourmet dinner at the Palisades Restaurant in Eggleston while you're here. Great fun!

Yet, we're just 14.5 miles, 25 minutes across two mountains, to Blacksburg & VATech University, where there are all kinds of things to do that you typically find in a university town. Enjoy VATech sports, graduation & special events. Picnic by the Duck Pond, walk on the paved trails around campus, go to concerts on campus and at the smaller venue of the Lyric Theater downtown (old, restored movie-house). And there is a brand-new Performing Arts Center. There are side-walk cafes like Gillie's & Caba Fish Taco where you can hear local music, & great local restaurants like Bull & Bones and Zeppoli's, as well as favorite chains. There are movie theaters and downtown small-shops & mall shopping. There's a year-round indoor pool at the Blacksburg Recreation Center on our side of Blacksburg, where they also have basketball courts, tennis courts, a skateboard ramp, & a hand-in-hand playground on a large open field with picnic shelters. They have great 4th of July fireworks there, too!

About Suzy, Owner

My husband and I purchased this property on our honeymoon! He was a new Assistant Professor in M.E. at VATech and I was a late-blooming student in English. We were blessed with the birth of our two sons six and nine years later. We are all VATech Hokies: Hal, M.E. 1960; Suzy, English 1974; Brooks, M.E. 1997; Shane, Biology & Political Science 2003.

Suzy, Owner purchased this house in 1969

Why Suzy, Owner chose Shenandoah Valley

Hal & I fell in love with the farm on our first visit - looking for a place to make our home together. On that beautiful Spring day in April, 1969, we walked up the mountain, sat on a big rock and looked down the valley at that incredible view - and knew this was where we wanted to be - forever.

What makes this house unique

Stunningly beautiful views and wonderfully peaceful environment on a private farm (268 acres) - with a contemporary cedar, fieldstone & glass house that wraps you up in comfort - adjoining the Jefferson National Forest and the Appalachian Trail, yet convenient to the people & culture of Blacksburg & VATech.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Suzy, Thank you so much for sharing your lovely home with us. We had a fantastic time even when it rained and especially when it snowed. We were ecstatic with the accommodations and appreciate your follow-up to ensure everything was ok. I am an avid reader so I especially enjoyed your library since it contains such a variety of subjects. My daughter and family are hikers so they were very happy to have the Appalachian trail so close.

We could not have asked for a more peaceful, lovely, inviting home and setting to spend our week and we hope to return soon.

Thanks again for providing us with a wonderful place to spend the week and for being so attentive to our needs.

Lovely Mountain Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed this property as a mini- reunion to allow family members who live in three localities the opportunity to get together. The home worked very well for 5 adults and 3 children. The very large and recently mowed lawn allowed for baseball games, learning to ride a bike and wading in the creek. The three young boys had a great time. Though easily accessible on a very well maintained gravel road, we were comfortable allowing our dog to spend time unsupervised in the yard because of the very infrequent traffic.

The kitchen and main living and dining area allowed plenty of space to both eat and socialize. All needed kitchen equipment was readily available. Cooking for a large group presented no special challenges. Both a propane and charcoal grill were in the back and worked well.

My wife and I arrived a day early and were hammered by a steady stream of thunderstorms that blanketed the area. We did lose power, but had just sat down for dinner. Unlike at home, we did not have to listen to a steady stream of generators. We found candles and flashlights, opened the windows and doors to watch the show. After turning in, the sounds of the rain and the creek serenaded us to sleep. Being in the mountains made for a cool, delightful night. I did call the owner who reported the outage on- line to Appalachian Power. They tried to restore the power unsuccessfully that night, but returned and had all working by noon the next day.

As we drove away, my wife said, "We need to come back!"

Beautiful Property - Beautiful Views

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented Blackberry Morning for a long weekend with a group of friends for the VT vs. NC state game. We had a wonderful experience at the home and with the owner. The owner is extremely organized and went out of her way to ensure that we had everything we needed for our stay. The house was very clean and the views are spectacular. We would definitely stay again and hope to very soon.

Where Peace and Understanding meet Sacred Ground

  • 5 of 5

We arrived to bring our oldest to start his college career at Virginia Tech. A rather stressful time prepping and actually making it to Blacksburg from Chicago.

Upon reaching Blackberry Farm Retreat - truly all stress melted away. It is a stunning 5 mile drive off 42 to reach the Farm - each mile closer to the farm your blood pressure drops.

The "Home" not house has been lovingly maintained and prepared for each visit. Your only concern could be - do I ever have to leave? Kitchen is well stocked as are the bathrooms - every thing has been thought of for your stay. (ps - the kitchen knives are truly sharp - very uncommon in rentals).

Once you nestle in either the family room or on the screened in porch - a sigh will escape your lips - you are home.

Most of all, this home embraces and pulls you into its heart. The connection with the land just soaks into your soul.

Bring family and relax, play and enjoy - Blackberry Farm welcomes you.

Perfect for Family gatherings.

  • 5 of 5

We rented this property for our son's wedding. Suzy was a pleasure to work with and the Home was perfect for the 4 generations and 2 dogs that gathered there. I strongly recommend this rental if you have a need for a large group of people and want a peaceful, comfortable, clean and well kept home in the Blacksburg area.

Peaceful, Relaxing & Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

My sister was getting married in Radford so my family and I flew in from San Diego and met up with my parents and my nieces, whom drove down from Northern VA. We all stayed at Blackberry Morning and couldn't have found a better, more peaceful, clean, well-kept mountain house to host us! The home is very spacious, the views are stunning and the grounds are just vast and well-kept. We had 4 kids ranging in age: 1 1/2, 4, 7 & 10 all of whom ran around to their heart's content outside EVERYDAY! They played near the streams (caution though, there is poison ivy so beware) and ran around outside every day! It was a rainy week but we welcomed it and it only rained mostly at night. The mountain cool air makes the a/c not a necessity, we cranked open the bedroom windows at night and enjoyed the fresh, cool air. The kitchen was fully stocked, the laundry room equipped w/ newer appliances and the verizon booster worked for our cell phones since that is our cell carrier. The TV room and games were great as was the big living room/kitchen area that has the stellar views of the mountain ranges and their property. We saw deer, 1 wild turkey, rabbits & lots of lighting bugs:) My husband went out several mornings and ran along the Appalachian Trail which is up the road from the house. If I ever return to the area, maybe for one of my Alma matter's football games (VA Tech) and I was staying for more than a few days, this would be my destination. You will not be disappointed, I promise. The ONLY thing I would change is a little bigger signage on the drive up to get to the house, the GPS doesn't exactly know where it's at and kept telling all of us it was to the left, but in fact it is a SHARP right turn. I'm not sure what type of restrictions there might be w/ re: to signage, but since all of us drove in at night looking for it, we definitely all had to turn around and really search for it.

Owner's Response: Thank you so very much for such a great review and for choosing to stay at Blackberry Morning Retreat. I'm so glad you had a great time and I hope you'll be back again soon. Those views really are stunning, aren't they?! I didn't know about the poison ivy by the creek. I'll have the yard maintenance people take care of that. And thank you for telling me about your difficulty in locating the driveway at night. I'll definitely get a larger sign up, with maybe a solar light, and make sure I restate the "visual" directions for the driveway's exact location in the body of the check-in email I send to guests. Thanks so much, Suzy

Peaceful Serenity

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a wonderful stay at Blackberry Morning Retreat while touring Virginia Tech over Spring Break. Everything was perfect! We left for an overnight jaunt to Harrisonburg and couldn't wait to get back to our home away from home. Suzy was delightful to work with. She made everything so easy. The house was roomy, everything that we needed was there (lots of nice towels and blankets), and the beds were the most comfortable of any that I have ever slept on in a vacation home. We are delighted that our daughter chose to attend Virginia Tech - it's a great school and now we can return to Blackberry Morning retreat often! We can't wait.

Blacksburg & Virginia Tech: Just 14 miles, yet a world apart! In the New River Valley of the Blue Ridge Highlands. Blackberry Morning is a stunningly beautiful mountain retreat on 268 private acres, so wonderfully quiet and peaceful. Gather family & friends to enjoy great times just being together, to attend Virginia Tech graduations, football games & reunions, or to experience fun outdoor adventures.

In the greatroom, enjoy conversations by the fire, around the table, or while cooking in the well-equipped kitchen. In the separate library/media room, read a book from the large collection or watch sports or a movie on the flat-screen TV.

Please Note: We have a permanent resident in the basement studio apartment of the house. John Powell, a 32-year-old VATech engineering student, is a very mature, responsible and friendly young man who is going back to school to get his engineering degree after working for a number of years. The apartment has a separate entrance and John will be very respectful of your presence. We like to have someone living there so we know the house is "watched over" for us.

You are welcome to hike anywhere on the land and enjoy the spectacular views from every vantage point. Picnic on the meadows & explore the creeks & park-like woods.

You can often see whitetail deer in the open pastures around the house early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The wild turkeys are elusive, but you can sometimes see them in the pastures or crossing the road. You might even get to see a black bear. Or a timber rattler. Please be aware that all of these occasionally venture into our yard, sometimes close to the house.

You can hike the Appalachian Trail at the top of our property. It's a 2.5 mile moderate-hike to Kelly Knob overlook. Other nearby hikes are Angel's Rest, Wind Rock and Dragon's Tooth.
