About Wendy Henry (Marshall)
Dave & Wendy Marshall and our neighbor Dillon Cornett work together to manage this small local family business. We restored the Big Barn Lodge as our weekend vacation home and family vacation retreat. We enjoyed flying into French Lick from our home in Lansing Michigan as a weekend retreat. Here in southern Indiana, we enjoy a slower pace of life, a beautiful countryside and our own private 9-hole-par-3 golf course. We think you too will find that things slow down here and that you will find it a unique place to share with family in our rustic Big Barn Lodge that we restored from a vintage family farmhouse and barn. Our life and business ventures now include the lodge rental business- Where we rent out out a total of 3 lodges: This property consists of: The Big Barn Lodge with vintage farmhouse, 'Blanche House.' The Big Barn Lodge is designed for larger groups and families. We host many weddings, parties and family reunions on the grounds. Fitness Retreats: We also manage our fitness retreats here at the ranch when we are not renting the property for family reunions, group outings, corporate retreats, church groups or other events. Elk Ridge Ranch is the perfect setting for a country themed wedding. At Elk Ridge Ranch we host many indoor and outdoor weddings in the Vineyards. The entire family enjoys aviation and fitness sports. The owner and his son are both pilots. We hope to meet you soon!
Wendy Henry (Marshall) purchased this Lodge in 2000
Why Wendy Henry (Marshall) chose Lost River
Why this property? This property came available at auction and we started on the restoration of the 1890s barn & 1901 farm house. The property had been in the family since 1816, so it has some historical charm too! We built a vacation home on the family farm because it was less than a two hour flight from our primary home. We loved the warmer weather in southern Indiana compared to where we lived in Michigan. We enjoy boating at Patoka Lake. We like to relax in the southern Indiana country surrounded by the Hoosier National Forest and close to the ambiance at historic French Lick Springs Resort and Casino. Living in a tourist town is like being on vacation all year long with Patoka Lake, PGA golf courses, tons of tourist attractions. About 3 cold months a year where our guests love to stay when they ski in Paoli, Indiana. We have mild spring weather. Warm summers and beautiful colors in the fall. We like the wooded lay of the land as a great spot to put up high fence for our Elk. We raised our own grass fed organic meats for several years. We nature and wildlife. The gentle rolling hills were perfect to build our personal, private golf course. Our golf course is a huge hit just because it is invitation only. It's available to renters of the Big Barn Lodge Blanche and our Grand lodge at Elk Ridge Ranch. Keep in mind....this is quite possibly the worst golf course in the USA! It is quite fun and it is very beautiful as its fairways are lined with grapevines and lavender plants. Here you can shoot Clay pigeons, handguns, have a bonfire, play golf, fish and make some noise if you want. In nearby French Lick, Indiana there are activities of all types to keep you amused. We are deep in the woods of The Hoosier National Forest but just 15 minutes from a 5 star hotel and world class steak house. We feel our location is a perfect balance of remote ranch living and activities in town that compare to some of the finest attractions among resort towns
What makes this Lodge unique
Unique Benefits of our property? We liked getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city and relaxing in the country as a change of pace. But we still like modern amenities, so we built our own 9-hole par 3 golf course on the property. For an extra activities fee, we can take you on a hay wagon ride or invite you to participate in one of our fitness classes. We have a full weight gym with cable weights, free weights and cardio equipment, so you can come back from vacation with a whole new physique. The Big Barn Lodge is a rustic western post and beam building with wagon wheel chandeliers, a pool room, a full commercial kitchen and lots of space to hoot-n-holler like in the old west. It is large and comfortable. The kitchen is all commercial grade just like a restaurant with all appliances and stocked with all of the plates, pots and pans that you will need for a group of up to 50. The covered deck is a great place to sit to enjoy the morning coffee a glass of wine in the evening. The pergola deck is also huge and it is a great place to sunbathe and enjoy a nice dinner on the deck. Our infrared sauna seats 3 people. If you are looking for something that is a bit more on the high end luxury end of country living, see our listing for the Grand Lodge VRBO 375028.

Very nice facilities. Plenty of activities on the property. Cooking for 20 was a breeze in the commercial kitchen. Our party of 20 used the Blanche House and the big barn main lodge. Took advantage of the 9-hole golf course, workouts in the gym, axe throwing barn and evenings around the huge bonfire.
It would have been nice to have a bathroom for the one bedroom without in the Blanche house, but we made due. Thanks for your hospitality!
Perfect for a large gathering!
We had a group of 24 (kids and adults) spend the New Year's weekend here. The space was perfect for our group. There was plenty of room to spread out and lots of activities to enjoy, even in the winter.
- Lots of space and parking
- Well appointed, large kitchen
- Axe throwing was fun and different!
- Plenty of linens
- Very clean
- Good WIFI
- Bring slippers or plan to wear shoes the whole time. Multiple people got splinters going without them in the main lodge.
- No mixer in the kitchen.
- No thermostat in the Blanche House that we could find.
- Dumpster was already full when we arrived. A large group generates quite a bit of trash!
We are definitely thinking of renting it again for next year!
Choice Place for a Ski Trip
Some of our buddies get together for a ski trip. Every trip here is a trip to remember. Warmed our feet by the fire after a hard day on the slopes and spent some time checking out the local hiking trails too. What a great place to get together with your buddies and just sit back and relax. Dave was a great host. Legendz Sports Bar and Grill in French Lick has great wings. Doing a do-over at Legends and Elk Ridge Ranch for sure!
Great Place for Family Holiday Celebration
My husband and I rented Elk Ridge Ranch for our annual family holiday celebration. The biggest room upstairs was a cozy place for us to relax in our PJ's and play cards, watch some great movies and share family time. We decorated the fireplace with stockings and garland so the grand kids could gather there for our gift exchange. The kids were fascinated to stay in a real western barn. Our young adults and teens are night owls! They stayed over in the main lodge with their activities going on until til way after midnight. My husband and some of the younger grand kids stayed over in the Blanche house, so we could get to bed earlier. The owner Dave hosted a surprise pizza bake in the pizza barn. The kids loved making their own pizzas and watching them bake. The boys played a few rounds of golf and had a great time. We went into French Lick a couple of nights for dinner. Kids were dazzled by the holiday lights and enjoyed time at the arcade and bowling alley in French Lick. Elk Ridge Ranch is a wonderful place for a large family get together. We loved the good times at the farm and still took advantage of the nearby tourist activities in French lick. We are already making plans to come back next year.
Great property for a big group party!
We had a great family reunion weekend at the Elk Ridge Ranch (8 family units: 13 adults, 8 kids). The owners were very helpful and responsive to all of our needs. Here is our feedback about the property:
*Great kitchen!!! The industrial kitchen was well-stocked and was great for food prep for a crowd.
*Great gathering space for a large group. We didn't make use of the bar or sound system, but there were couches, tables, and chairs enough for all of us. It was a little cold to use the deck, but in warmer weather this would be an awesome space.
*Beautiful grounds--rolling hills, vineyards, nine-hole golf course, fishing pond, and large bonfire pit with plenty of bench seating.
*Plenty of beds for a big group, including a bunk room that the kids loved!
*Awesome gym (2 floors!) with lots of work out equipment options.
*Plenty of parking for a crowd.
*Unusual bed/bath set-up. There were only 3 bathrooms (3 showers) in the main building and only one bathroom on the main floor where most of us had rooms and everyone hung out. In Blanche House there is a first floor room without an en suite bath, which would be OK but there is NO bathroom that is NOT en suite (hope your comfortable using a bath in someone else's room--this was a problem for us).
*10 of the beds are in a large bunk room. This was great for us for the kids, but may not be so good for many groups.
*The kitchen is downstairs, but there is only seating for 8 downstairs. The main dining area is upstairs. There is no elevator, so it is a lot of stairs up and down with food and dishes.
*The property is NOT handicapped friendly. The main eating and gathering area are on the second floor and there are no wheelchair accessible bedrooms. This was a little bit hard on my parents who have trouble with stairs.
*The property had been recently exterminated or sprayed for bugs, but no one had done the "clean up" afterward. There were dead and dying bugs (including wasps) all over floors, showers, and even in beds (gross!)
*It was a cold weekend and no one had turned the heat on enough in advance. It was so cold when we arrived we had to wear our coats. Even the next morning it was still almost too cold to undress for a shower. There were no vents in the bedrooms--space heaters were available but could not be used in multiple rooms as they tripped circuits.
*DON'T USE THE FIREPLACE! This was NOT posted or explained, but the room filled with smoke (flu was open).
Our most sincere apologies that the central heat was not turned up prior to your arrival anticipating the colder weather on November 10th. This is not our standard procedure. There is central heat. There are heating vents. The heat should have been turned up well in advance of your stay so you had the warmth and hospitality you deserve. We provide additional in room heaters only to help supplement individual temperature preferences for our guests.
As owners living on the 120 acre ranch, we try to promptly address any housekeeping issues when notice is given by guests. We want to help keep nature out and make sure your experience is pleasant. We promise to do whatever we can to help make your stay more warm and comfy here in the Hoosier National Forest.
We can provide an electronic pdf floor plan of the property to give an accurate view of the space. Our intention is to represent this historic farm property as accurately as possible. (Interpreting verbal descriptions from memory can be confusing with such a large space.) This visual floor plan allows guests to request different ground level dining plans in the lobby adjoining the kitchen or make advance requests regarding furniture arrangement prior to their stay. We'll add up to 50 photos to give more views of all the rooms. Watching our video tour and using the floor plans helps make sure the space meets your needs.
PLEASE USE THE FIREPLACE! We have a new 6-foot x 4 foot electric fireplace insert with alternating panoramic fire displays with or without heating options. Thanks for your investment and your feedback to help improve our property.
love the property and the owners and Dillon were so helpful!
2nd year to stay. Huge kitchen to feed over 20 family members. Every one had bedrooms and plenty of baths for all. Pizza night in barn was fun as well as patio, fire pit, par 3 golf etc...so much room for all of us and the huge grounds-forest was fun to explore. Would recommend to our friends. Thank you Wendy, Dave and especially Dillon. Great family vacation.
