Welcome to Olli's Town Home. A beautiful cedar shake home right across from Grand Marais Bay. This large home can accommodate big groups or be the perfect getaway for two. Pet friendly and right in town, next to the post office, with "easy walk" access to Lake Superior and miles of pristine, sandy beaches.
Located in the heart of Grand Marais, Olli's Town Home provides a great spot to relax and slow down the pace of life. Our spacious home offers two bedrooms downstairs, each with a queen size bed. Upstairs is a large sleeping loft with two twin beds and another queen size bed. Enjoy people watching from the front deck. Walk to the beach, the post office, the grocery store, hardware, yummy food etc. Bring bikes and enjoy a ride out to Coast Guard Point or to Pictured Rocks Visitor Center and Sable Falls. Enjoy sunrise and sunsets over the bay from the deck or balcony.
Settle in at night with a good book next to the stone fireplace. Cook a gourmet meal in the ample kitchen. Whatever the day brings, Olli's Town Home is the perfect spot to call home in Grand Marais.
We liked it a lot , much better than renting a hotel/motel room for a few days. There were four of us (two couples) and there was plenty of room for everyone to roam and have space to read ,watch tv, explore the town, fish, hike ,make multiple trips to the brewery all within a quick walk from the home. We highly recommend the quaint old school diner... and if your up for a game of pool or ping pong we found and had fun with both in the basement :)
My husband and I travel frequently and have rented numerous vacation properties. We are very familiar with the town of Grand Marais and knew the location would work great for us so we decided to rent this property even though there is a limited number of reviews.
Location – For us, the location is perfect, In town and just across the street from the beach. The sunrise was beautiful and could be viewed while sitting at the kitchen table.
The House – I love the open floor plan. The living room has plenty of comfortable seating. The kitchen is well stocked and has a huge island and good size fridge. It has lots of counter space which is good since the cupboards were full which forced us to store our food on the counter. There are plenty of nice pans and dishes but they are hard to find among all the not so nice items that filled the cupboards. The bathroom is a comfortable size and I found it clean with plenty of towels and hot water. We found the beds and linens comfortable. The loft has a queen and two twin beds but there really is only room for two beds. In my opinion the beds were too close together. We did not use the second twin so I cannot comment on the comfort.
As mentioned in previous reviews - This house is located on a road that is considered busy by Grand Marais standards. The post office is next door and the 4 wheelers use this road to head out to the trails. The road was quiet at night.
We found the neighborhood dogs went a bit nuts our first day but settled down after a day or two. The dogs were quiet during sleep hours.
Final Thoughts - We had a great week but in fairness to potential renters, I have to mention we had a couple problems. The property is a pet friendly home and I have allergies. I thought since the home is mostly wood I would be ok; bad decision. Pet hair is not an easy thing to get rid of. We also had a problem with earwigs inside the house which apparently was not a new problem but one that quickly got out of control during our stay. It may have simply been a case of all the right or maybe I should say wrong conditions. The weather was unusually dry and earwigs like moisture so they came into the house at night looking for water. I spoke with the manager and she did her best to control the problem (without success) and offered compensation but nothing could change the fact that each evening we literally had the creepy crawlies all night.
We have been going to Grand Marais for years as my husband has family there. We were so excited to be able to squeeze in a last minute getaway to Grand Marais last week as we were not planning on visiting this year. It really is "Nature in Abundance" and we love visiting the falls, sand dunes, logslide, etc. Boy did we luck out with the Ollie rental!!!! I was a little nervous after reading the one negative review, but I'm thinking that person is not someone familiar with the lovely town of Grand Marais. I have to say this is the nicest house we have ever stayed in there. It was the perfect layout for our family of five as it's all open and roomy, allowing for all of us to spend our quality time together without feeling cramped. My kids loved the "catwalk" from the loft to the balcony!! The front deck is so relaxing as you have a great view of the bay. The house is in a great location so that you can walk to everything in town.....walk to the bay for a swim, walk to the diner for breakfast or the bar for dinner, etc. The house came loaded with everything we needed and the kitchen and grill were awesome for cooking our meals. I already have picked out my week for next summer as I plan on staying here every year as long as they'll have us. It really was a super relaxing trip.....one of the most memorable trips ever for us to Grand Marais. Even our dog loved it and was very relaxed. Don't hesitate to rent this home as you won't be disappointed.....just make sure not to take my week ;)
The only thing wrong with our stay at the Olli was that it wasn’t long enough (but the fact my wife and I had to go back to work can hardly be the fault of the owner.)
We had inquired about staying in this location numerous times, but each time we looked into it, the place was already rented. We finally got wise and made our reservations a few months in advance.
The place was immaculate. Although easier access to the basement is an enhancement recommendation I would make, the overall workmanship that went into building this house is very professional. In addition to the house itself we have always loved the location. It is right next the post office and so close to town you can easily walk to the restaurants and local markets. The town beach on Grand Marais Bay is just up the street with Lake Superior’s “Agate Beach” a mere block or two beyond that. In addition, the eastern boundary of the Pictured Rocks is a short drive from town.
It is true that the house sits across the street from the lake/beach. However, the view of the lake from the porch is fabulous and when seen from the outside balcony on the second floor it moves into the spectacular.
Grand Marais is by its very nature, a small, secluded town, on the shores of Lake Superior. It does not, anywhere within its boundaries, have anything that could remotely be defined as a “busy street”. To get more secluded one would need to seek a rental in the middle of the woods.
Not only would we go back, we fully intend to go back, just as soon as we can get ourselves squeezed onto the schedule.
For everyone reading this and looking for a great place in a great town to spend a few relaxing days I suppose I could recommend the Olli more, but, I just don’t know how.
We were not happy with our stay at Olle house. Behind the house is a house with 6 dogs, two of which are blood hounds and would howl in the middle of the night. The house does not have air conditioning, so you need to keep the windows open. Since the street is busy we were kept awak by a celll phone ringing at the house next door. The lake view is not very good and you are on a busy street, next to the post office. We did not enjoy sitting outside. We did not see a pool table or sauna. They may have been in the basement, which we did not go into since you enter it from and outside door. It is not a walk out basement. The house seemed not very clean. The gas grill does not work well, so your food tastes like propane. The oven had burnt food, so your food tasted burnt. The refrig was not very cold and the ice make does not work. The floor of the shower is dirty. The carpet in the bedroom is stained. The pictures make the house look much better than it is, we were very disappointed with our stay and will not return.
