About Matthew Rudolph

Retired professors' vacation home.

Matthew Rudolph purchased this house in 1960

Why Matthew Rudolph chose Eastern Vermont

Out the back door, you will find a seating area with a fire pit, overlooking the slope down to the lakeside with a small beach and dock. The lake itself provides boating and swimming and boating in summer, and skating in winter. An extensive network of trails can be hiked, biked or run year-round, although skis or snowshoes might be necessary in the snowy months.

What makes this house unique

Large lawn. Play and boat in the lake while viewed from the enclosed porch and patio. Rope Swing.

A country home located on the banks of Silver Lake, with beautiful lakefront views.

Inside, this unique 4+ BR house offers the comfort of a stone fireplace, multiple kitchens, dining area, and a wide variety of comfortable personal spaces for socializing in groups or one-on-one. The charming locale offers hiking, swimming, boating, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing, starting right outside the door!

This house, carefully tended by the family who has owned it for two generations, is simultaneously spacious and cozy. The four bedrooms are spaced widely for privacy, with three upstairs and one on the ground floor. For your convenience, a bathroom is located on each floor.

The kitchen is well-equipped, with a large refrigerator and extensive shelf storage, suitable preparing a humble breakfast or a feast for a dozen guests.

The centerpiece of the great room on the ground floor is a large stream-stone fireplace, surrounded by couches and rocking chairs. A few steps takes you to the sun room, running the entire length of the house and looking out over Silver Lake.

Lovely home on Silver Lake

  • 4 of 5

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. A beautiful, comfortable home with great views of the lake and easy access to hiking trails and general store. Plenty of room for 6 people and a very well equipped kitchen.

serene lakehouse with a beautiful view

  • 5 of 5

the property was great. You have a magnificent view from the main room of the house overlooking the lake. The backyard slopes downhill to the lakeshore with plenty of space. there is a patio in the back with a fire pit stand and a small grill

You have access to a canoe and 2 kayaks and even a small sailboat.

The bedrooms were clean, and the kitchen had all the things you might need.

Of note- Matthew the owner stayed in the downstairs apartment attached to the house while we were there. Matthew was kind, helpful, and available if anything was needed.

Warm family home on beautiful Silver Lake

  • 5 of 5

The house was wonderful, as described by Matteo. We loved the lived-in feel of the place, with family photos and memorabilia throughout the house. We used the grill and ample kitchen to cook big meals each morning and evening. The beds were comfortable for all 3 couples. Luckily the weather was cool enough in the evenings to leave the windows open and feel the night air. The kayaks and canoes were great fun, as was swimming in the lake. Matteo was an excellent host, informing us of local events, grocery and restaurant options, and more. The downstairs neighbor was friendly. We would certainly stay here again!

Owner's Response: Nicole and her family and friends were great. The place barely looked as if anyone had been there when they left. Lovely guests whom I hope will return!

Wonderful house, beautiful location!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed every minute of our 4 night stay. There were 7 of us, from all over the country, gathered for a graduation at Vermont Law in S Royalton. The house is charming and lovely and full of family touches that made us feel at home. The kitchen is large and very well equipped so that we could cook all our meals there and enjoy a happy gathering all day long. We went on a few little hikes around the lake, on easy, well-marked trails, and we enjoyed wandering down to the country store to pick up local supplies.

Our experience could not have been nicer, and we're talking about coming back again for another family get-together!

Thank you so much to all the Rudolph family!

Owner's Response: Susan was a gracious guest and the whole gang left little impact. Easy communication and careful guests. Wish I could have tasted any of the baking that happened! Hope they come back!

What a lovely place!

  • 5 of 5

Wow! My husband and I were looking for a week-long getaway in the dead of winter, and we needed a place that would welcome our dog, too. We feel very lucky that we found this home, and Matthew was very helpful about making arrangements and checking in with us by text to make sure we were comfortable.

This home looks EXACTLY like the photos shown, and although the cleaning fee is a bit high, it is well worth it -- this house was IMMACULATELY clean. It's an older property, but so well cared for that even the choosiest of guests would be comfortable.

I should also say, this is LARGE house. We never used the top floor or the garden level at all. There's a nice master suite right on the main level, so the three of us were very comfortable just using the main floor. We kept a fire burning during most of our visit, and the kitchen was well-equipped for all the meals we wanted to cook. All we needed to do was drop in town to pick up groceries at the Woodstock Farmer's Market (a great place!).

Although this property is 8 - 10 miles from Woodstock, it was easy to drive back and forth on the days when we wanted to do some sight-seeing or eat out.

This house sits right on Silver Lake in a gorgeous valley. It seemed that the view out the back windows changed by the hour and sometimes by the minute! We watched people ice fishing and skiing across the lake one day, then others speed skating and walking across the lake on another.

Silver Lake State Park is on the opposite side of the lake, and we enjoyed driving the 2 minutes down the hill and around the bend to get there and take our dog for a pretty walk within the park. Even in the winter, the park roads were plowed and passable on foot, and it was fun to imagine who all the footprints in the snow belonged to, for there were many varieties!

What surprised me the most about this home and the location of Barnard was how absolutely nice and welcoming the community was. Everyone said hello to us, whether we were walking in the park, stopping in at the general store, or dropping post cards at the post office (all of which are within walking distance).

This was a wonderful, no-cell-service (but great internet at the house!) getaway for us, full of comfort, beautiful views and walks, nice people, great food, and total relaxation. We loved it here on Silver Lake, and hope to visit again!
