I adored renovating and restoring this brownstone building and hope you love it as much as I do. I love to travel, and equally appreciate meeting travelers from all over the world. Hope to meet you soon!
Owner purchased this apartment in 2005
I chose to live in Crown Heights, Brooklyn because of it's undeniable charm, and convenient access to Manhattan.
You'll find a sanctuary here, and you'll be privy to all of my personal favorite activities in the neighborhood. Satellite TV with over 150 channels including 30 movie channels, DVD player and DVD library are all set for when you need to unwind. This is a true basement suite with ceiling height of approximately 83' high (6ft 10'), with the exception of a mid section which is 73' high (6ft 1').
We greatly enjoyed our stay at Krista's beautiful apt. This was our first experience with VRBO and it was a wonderful introduction!
The photos online do not do justice to just how beautiful and functional this apt is. I was expecting the apt to be a bit dark, since it's in the basement, but Krista has done an excellent job with track lighting and the apt is very well lighted...not dark in the least!! The apt has everything that you need for your stay, including blow dryer, shampoo, conditioner, and wonderful smelling body wash (since this was our first time with VRBO, I wasn't sure if it would have these amenities). The kitchen is fully equipped and Krista leaves freshly baked banana bread out on the counter, a really nice touch. The kitchen is also stocked with orange juice, milk, and apples, as well as coffee and teas. All the spices one would need to cook are also in the cupboard.
There are two air conditioners in the apt, so cooling is not an issue at all. There is also a stand alone fan. Plenty of closet space and towels and comfortable bedding. But, the absolute best part was relaxing in the jacuzzi jet bathtub after walking all day in the city!! Such a nice treat!!
Krista made us feel entirely comfortable and left a notebook full of suggestions for everything from restaurants to numbers for taxi cabs (much cheaper airport transportation than I found online).
The neighborhood is about 4 blocks to the Franklin Ave. subway station, with access to the Number 2, 3, 4, and 5 trains. You can take an express train which will get you into mid-town Manhattan in about 20-25 minutes (obviously, the local trains take a bit longer). There are lots of food options in the neighborhood...we popped out to one of the many deli/convenience stores for a take-away breakfast each morning. A full service grocery store is also about 4 blocks away. The neighborhood is very lively, but at no time did we feel unsafe and we walked back to the apt after midnight on two occasions.
The only caveat I would offer is that when we returned to the apartment building late our first night, the hallway light was off, making it very difficult to find our way to the apt (thank goodness for the flashlight app on the i-phone!). The next morning, however, we discovered a light switch to the hallway conveniently located next to the front door and a second light switch located closer to the apt.
This was an entirely positive experience!
A convenient location. Handy to the subway and plenty of nice restaurants and food stores. The best meals we had in NYC were right around the corner.
We stayed a week in this apartment while visiting NY.
It is on the basement, so you can sometimes feel humidity, but it's a great option to stay in NY for a reasonable price.
Well communicated with Metro. The owner Krista can easily be reached for any problem or doubt, answering to messages in just a few hours.
The apartment has all you can need, so I would definitely recommend it.
If we come back to NY, this apartment would be a must for us.
Our family of 5 thoroughly enjoyed our trip and stay in Brooklyn. The neighborhood is very diverse and we always felt safe. Close to the subway. Krista was very responsive and the apartment was very clean. The apartment was better than advertised and we enjoyed resting there. The only challenge we had was the street parking, but that has more to do with my inability to parallel park :-) I would definitely recommend to other families looking for an excellent base of operations for NYC!
Everything about this experience was wonderful. Krista is very responsive to emails and provides thorough instructions about the apartment prior to arrival. The unit itself is basically underground, so you sleep very well :-). It isn't dark, though, and doesn't feel like you're in the lowest level of the building. Krista has done an excellent job with lots of warm lighting throughout the unit. It doesn't feel claustrophobic or tight.
It's super-close to the subway and easy to access from the airport (we used JFK, via Long Island RR and subway). Having a serviceable kitchen makes all the difference in an expensive city like NY. The bathroom is beautifully decorated and the shower/tub is great.
The pictures on the listing accurately reflect the apartment. It was clean and had plenty of supplies (toilet paper, bath amenities, tea, coffee filters). There is banana bread waiting for you when you arrive, which my mother particularly enjoyed.
We ate in many of the neighborhood restaurants--all excellent and reasonably priced. We'd definitely return to this rental when we come back to the City.
Thanks, Krista, for providing such a lovely space!
My family of 4 thoroughly enjoyed this basement suite. We spent six days there, exploring Manhattan during the day. For New York, the suite was spacious and a chance to breathe out after busy days exploring. We felt very much at home and always very glad to get back there to unwind.
There are a lot of great restaurants nearby, including a great bagel shop with great, affordable smoothies and juices. We also enjoyed the organic restaurant just a few blocks away to the south. Compared to other parts of Brooklyn we explored, that were more urban, Prospect Heights is a place we would consider living. It had a small, friendly neighborhood feel. There are so many sites to explore very close
The subway is not far away, especially if you use the shuttle line.
We would definitely stay here again. I would recommend spending a day just exploring Brooklyn, too.
It's a 5 minute walk to the nearest subway station at Franklin Ave, where you can catch the 2,3,4 & 5 trains, all of which run express to Manhattan. It's a 15 minute ride to Wall St, 25 minute ride to Union Square and 30 minutes to Grand Central Station.
We're just a 10 minute walk away from the amazing Brooklyn Botanical Gardens which should not be missed ! Other points of reference: 10 minutes to the Brooklyn Museum, a 20 minute subway ride to Coney Island, 5 minute subway ride to famous BAM (highly acclaimed music and theatre performances) .
We're located in the neighborhood Crown Heights, Brooklyn, a working class neighborhood on the border on the more affluent neighborhood Prospect Heights. We have the best of both worlds: affordable living with the option of hopping over to the next neighborhood for trendy restaurants and higher end boutiques featuring local designers.
