Wonderful medieval apartment in the historic hill-town of Anghiari. Bedrooms overlook the Tiber valley or the winding stone paved streets.
Our apartment, La Casa Cantabria, was built 800 yeas ago on the same street where St.Thomas of Canterbury is said to have stayed before going back to England to his martyrdom. As you climb the short marble staircase from the street, you go back in history. From the sitting room you see almost exactly the same view that artist Piero della Francesco painted in his great masterpieces, many of which are on display in the local towns of Sansepolcro, Monterchi and Arezzo. While the building is medieval, the two bathrooms and the kitchen are of course new.
The sitting/dining room, with sofa bed, is very comfortably furnished and decorated with a fine Vincenzo Calli painting. Upstairs there are three bedrooms, one with a king-size bed, one with two singles which can be made up as one, and a third with a single bed. The upstairs bathroom boasts a hot towel rail which has been commented upon with pleasure by many guests. Furnished to a high standard.
In summer, a cooling up-draft from the valley blows through the apartment, and, combined with the overhead fans in each of the bedrooms, ensures a comfortable night's sleep. In winter, radiators keep the apartment snugly warm within its thick ancient walls.
We love old buildings, old towns, castles and churches. We like fresh Tuscan food and wine, and love the restaurants in Anghiari. We, my twin sister and I, have known Anghiari for 15 years, and when we had the opportunity to buy this apartment we took it sight-unseen, and have never regretted it. Because my husband is a university professor, we get the chance to take long academic breaks and we focus on Italian film, and the riches of art and sculpture around us. We also are walkers and there are great possibilities for walks ranging from strolls along the Tiber banks to some serious high hill trekking. Lastly, Anghiari is a great place to get on with any book that needs writing because of its peacefulness.
Caroline Sampson purchased this apartment in 2006
The 800 year old medieval walled town of Anghiari is in the heart of Tuscany,a world heritage site and one of Europe's most colorful countrysides. both in towns and villages, the Italians you will meet are most friendly to Americans. Tuscany is the cradle of the Renaissance, so we love the art galleries, medieval towns and wonderful music and arts festivals. Italian food and Tuscan cuisine is superb. Walking, horse riding and in Winter, skiing are great.
We love Anghiari for many reasons: the sense it gives us of living in the medieval world, with narrow streets and wonderful old buildings; the warmth of the Italians who really welcome visitors; the easy driving distance of wonderful cities like Sienna, Florence, Perugia and countless small towns and villages set in a mountain landscape; the fresh mountain air while walking or riding or biking....and of course the food and wine.
Our three days in Anghiari have been a delight - the restorative Tuscan sunshine and air, endless fields of sunflowers, the bubbling chatter of Italian neighbors in the lane below our open window, the company of friends both old and new. We enjoyed our excursions to Monte Santa Maria Tiburina. Other highlights included a visit to Ravagni's Olive Oil factory founded 1421, and San Sepulchro's White Nights celebration.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this apartment! It is a perfect place to stay, both comfortable and beautiful.
It is suitable for many types of holidays: family holidays, sightseeing.
I would most certainly come back.
We loved this apartment in Anghiari! The bedrooms were smaller than we expected, but certainly ok, and the ceiling fans were essential as it was hot. The kitchen was stocked for our arrival with basic essentials and the living areas very comfortable. The upstairs bathroom was noisy (water pump) and small, but the downstairs bathroom with a washer/dryer (we didn't need the latter as it was so hot) was just great. Because the apartment is in the upper city wall, the views out the window were amazing, and by leaving the front door open, we had a nice cross breeze. And the same for the upstairs area. Lovely comfortable furnishings and our hosts were in residence just down the street so we enjoyed an evening with them at their apartment. Anghiari is the perfect medieval village, narrow winding streets (it's on a hill, so there's plenty of up and down) with flowers everywhere, quiet, clean, lovely. We were met at the top of Anghiari at a bar by Guiseppe (once we reached him) who led us to the property. We were able to park our car just outside the wall so had a very short walk to the apartment from the car. We tried three local restaurants, all good, especially Da Alighiero and Feudo del Vicario. Would recommend this apartment highly, I can't imagine staying anywhere else in Tuscany!
I would highly recommend this property. The description is very accurate. You will not be disappointed with the amenities or the appearance of the property. The views from the windows are just spectacular. We stayed from 9/24-10/5/2013.We rented a car from the airport(Rome) and did many day trips--Sansepolcro,Arrezzo,Perugia,Assisi,Siena, San Gimignano and La Verna. We drove to Arrezzo and took the train into Florence. Went to Ravagni(olive grove/winery) for a tour and I would also do lunch with the family. My favorite restaurant was Da Alighiero. Owners are great along with their dog Bamba. We were a group of five two which were my parents in their 70's. Was worried about the steep hills but they did very well.My parents were extremely pleased with the location and Anghiari itself.Staying here makes staying in a hotel hard to do. This place is a real hidden jewel in the Tuscany region. I hope it stays that way. Guiseppe and Fiametta are extremely helpful. We moved on to Rome to finish up our visit in Italy. Everyone agreed--we would come back and spend the entire time right here in Casa Cantabria and enjoy what this little town has to offer. The local people are wonderful and the setting breathtaking.Life is good here!!
We had a great stay at Casa Cantabria. The apartment was nicely laid out and comfortable, especially the beds! We had everything we needed for cooking our own meals with local goods and could walk easily to several local restaurants. We especially liked Cantina Granducci and Ristorante da Alighiero, where we took a terrific cooking class with Silvia. Parking was more convenient then we expected, only a short walk to the front door. We took advantage of the central location to visit a number of the local villages, towns, and cities. Despite unseasonably cold and damp weather, we really enjoyed our stay.
My wife and I spent a week in Florence and then traveled by train to Arezzo where we rented a vehicle that took us to our planned trip to Anghiari. Accompanying us were two French friends to share the apartment for the week. We found Casa Cantabria very well equipped in a beautiful setting. The people of the town are very friendly and helpful and unlike other more well known sites in Italy, Anghiari was not over burdened with tourists. Exploring the town and the surrounding countryside was an enjoyable adventure although I do recommend everyone have a GPS system on their rental car. The apartment is very roomy, clean and has every amenity that one would need for a week's stay in the town. We even were able to prepare and eat a few of our evening meals in the apartment after a long day of sightseeing. Giuseppe was most helpful in assisting us in settling into the apartment and had given us info prior to our arrival in Italy. The owner of the property also was very helpful in giving us advice and information about Anghiari prior to our departure. We felt right at home immediately. Our only concern was the parking outside the walls of the city, not because of theft or vandalism but rather the steep road system that circles the town. This means parking on a 45 degree plane sometimes which is a bit of a concern when one is not 100% confident of the rental vehicle.
Our decision to spend much of September and October in La Casa Cantabria rested heavily on the reviews on this site. We can now say that our experience surpassed all of our expectations. It is the absolutely perfect place to settle down for a leisurely visit to Tuscany and surrounding provinces. The modern European equipment and furnishings make for an exceedingly comfortable stay, and Fiametta is always ready to help with any housekeeping needs. We cannot recommend it too highly!

The 800 year old medieval walled town of Anghiari is on the borders of Tuscany and Umbria, one of Europe's most colorful countrysides. the main square is only 5 minutes walk and there you will find bars, ice cream shops, delicatessen, fruit and vegetables, the post office, two museums and and 4 great restaurants. The bus stop and two supermarkets are ten minutes walk away; car parking is 3 minutes away. You live in an apartment which is part of the old world, with stunning views from the windows. SS AS The museums & picture galleries in Perugia and Arrezzo are under an hour by car, Florence 90 minutes and Sienna two hours. The Anghiari music festival in July is just one of many great classical and jazz events. The vineyards are outstanding, and all the local Italians love the Americans who liberated them.
Other Activities: Exploring medieval hill towns, walking the footpaths along the Upper Tiber river, canoeing on the river, sailing and windsurfing on Lake Trasameno, White water rafting, mountain walking along marked trails, walking the St. Francis pilgrim route between Assisi, Anghiari and La Verna.
