Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Queen Sleeper, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps up to 7)

Our vacation rental called IdylWest is a “SHOTGUN MODERN HOUSE” built in 2006 as an IN-TOWN RETREAT BY FAMOUS BOOK AUTHOR, screen writer and outdoor enthusiast Thomas McGuane whose many works include the film Missouri Breaks starring Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando.

Designed as a hip and modern abode by award-winning architectural firm Thinktank AIA, it has many high-end features. Upon completion, the house was given a HISTORIC PRESERVATION AWARD for blending in so nicely with it’s downtown historic neighborhood and was FEATURED IN “AT HOME MAGAZINE” for its innovative design and outdoor space:

“The main floor features an open living and dining room with dark poured concrete floors which include radiant heat and and crisp white walls. A combination of metal, wood and earth-tones create a modern yet characteristically Montana feel. Tucked at the back of the house the kitchen continues the wood and metal theme found throughout the house. A loft-style floor plan allows for the maximum amount of light on the main floor as well as the master bedroom upstairs. Cork flooring on the second floor appeal to both the rustic and modern sensibility. A walk out upper deck that opens off the master bedroom is a sheltered place to take in the view of the Bridger Mountains. …The master bathroom has something for everybody with both a classic clawfoot tub and a modern, pale green tiled shower. Surprisingly, since from the outside it appears to be almost completely underground, the walk-out basement is almost as light as the upper floors, Outside, THE SMELL OF CEDER AND FLOWERS DRIFTS ON THE BREEZE. The garden is a combination of young trees and hearty native plants and flowers, Exchanging grass for small wood chips and stone walkways makes the yard a beautiful and accessible oasis.”

Idylwest is now managed as a VRBO by Bozeman Cottage Vacation Rentals, A UNIQUE AND LOCAL BUSINESS which was one of the first in town to offer these types of lodgings. And so, you deal with a seasoned business, yet one that provides a local and personal experience. Our manager, Paul and his staff of colorful locals are available to help you have the very best stay. We have hosted famous jazz singers, fishermen, ice climbers, skiers, scientists, summer residents and those who want to experience a vibrant town, the natural wonders of Yellowstone, Bridger Bowl a local SKI MOUNTAIN JUST 25 MINUTES AWAY and more.

And, for your experiences, we have put together a personalized “INSIDERS GUIDE” to easily find the best places that locals know and you might not otherwise find.

Our DOWNTOWN LOCATION IS PERFECT because it is in a quiet tree lined street in the historic district yet within EASY WALKING DISTANCE (a few blocks!) to a food coop for groceries, a food and salad bar with different cuisine every day; elegant and casual dining, trendy boutiques, art walks, bluegrass music, coffeehouses, local ice cream, dancing in tea shops, yoga, library, theatre, wine and cheese, breweries, outdoor fireplaces, farmers markets, cultural arts center, art galleries, theatre, local rivers, and the many Bozeman festivals held year round in and around main street. Yes all of these and THE OUTDOORS!

Go green and rent a bike from a sister organization, Bozeman Bike Rentals which uses an electric bike and trailer to deliver and pick up bikes. Bike to a nearby trail called called “Main Street to the Mountains” and BIKE PATH-LINED STREETS THAT WIND THROUGH THE HISTORIC DISTRICT to breakfast, lunch or dinner. Visit nearby Montana State University for Shakespeare in the Park or the Museum of the Rockies. Begin a hike or bike a block or so away through a forest. In the evening, walk to the farmers market for provisions or dinner by a river. Nearby Peet’s Hill overlooks town and here you will find dogs, happy people and one of the most beautiful sunsets you have ever seen.

Idylwest is owned by former New Yorker’s Richard and Mary Ann Martell (also 20 year residents). We also own the HISTORIC DOWNTOWN LOFT (VRBO Listing #362767) which accommodates 2 or so people a block away.

About Paul

The Gallatin Valley has always been home to me and I started Bozeman Cottage in 1998 to help keep me here. Since then the business has grown mostly by accident and I started managing IdylWest Modern Guest House in 2013. Southwest Montana will capture you with its rugged, wild, landscape and majestic mountain views. You can truly experience why it's called Big Sky Country.

My company is small enough to make sure you are welcomed warmly, and I'm sure you'll relish this spacious, quiet space to unwind and enjoy the surrounding mountains and scenery, as well as the excitement of being right in the heart of Bozeman.

Catch prize blue ribbon trout at several public accesses along the Gallatin River just a few miles away, ski three downhill and two cross country ski resorts, hike in an area replete with well-groomed hiking trails, and bike the extensive trails in Bozeman itself. It's a short 30 minutes to Bridger Bowl, 60 minutes to Big Sky ski resort, another 35 minutes to Yellowstone Park AND the relaxing, luxurious Bozeman Hot Springs and Spa is just 12 miles away!

Paul purchased this house in 2013

Why Paul chose Montana

This house is a combination of an ideal location in the heart of town, and a stunning home that catches many an eye. I like the contemporary design and because it's near all the exciting things to do in Bozeman, yet it sits quietly in a tree-lined neighborhood. As for IdylWest itself, the house feels both warm and cozy and spacious and modern at the same time. We love the outdoor living space which, with its bushes, flowers and even strawberries, gives you a feeling of being in nature while at the same time you're right in a city neighborhood. An added feature is the famous Bozeman Hot Springs and Spa, just seven miles away: a first-class spa with an olympic-size swimming pool, another outdoor heated pool, hot, warm and cold soaking pools, sauna and steam room and full gym. A wonderfully indulgent way to spend a Sunday morning, or to cap off your day outdoors. Open at 6 am most mornings and closed Fridays sunset until Sunday morning. http://www.bozemanhotsprings.co/hours-location/ Downtown Bozeman has great small shops, first-class restaurants, live theatre, movies, art galleries, concerts, jazz, local musicians, museums, MSU football and basketball games, opera, ballet, weekly Music on Main in the summer, monthly Arts Walks, and the exciting yearly Sweet Pea Arts Festival the first weekend of August, which celebrates the magnificent summers in our Valley, and so much more.

What makes this house unique

New, bright, and hip, this house is a refreshing blend of modern design and casual comfort. Passive solar design fills the house with sunlight year round and the sun's heat in winter.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Our family enjoyed a marvelous nine day stay at Idylwest. This vacation home was meticulously maintained and ready for our family to enjoy. It is located just a few blocks from the active Bozeman Main Street and of course a short drive to the fabulous Southwest Montana vacation spots. Idylwest comes prepared with everything a family could possibly need, including kitchen supplies, and it felt like home within minutes of us moving in. It is easy to get spoiled living at Idylwest and our family will have a hard time ever enjoying an overnight stay in a typical hotel again when we travel. We are looking forward to our return to Idylwest next summer.

Perfect Bozeman Homebase

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four had a fantastic three-week stay. The house is perfectly situated close to Main Street, Bogert Park and Peet's Hill, and is an ideal homebase to explore the surrounding region. Would definitely return.

Parent's stay while visiting Bozeman

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect place to relax with my parents while they visited my wife and I here in Bozeman. We utilized the back porch and grill whenever possible. It's close proximity to Pete's Hill (Burke Park) and downtown made it perfect for walks. It is also pet friendly and has a fenced in backyard. Paul from Bozeman Cottage (who operate a group of rental listings) was great and attentive to our stay.

Get-away in the heart of Bozeman

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I come to Bozeman for about a week every month during the school year to help our daughter-in-law with our granddaughter. We love staying at this house. The neighborhood is super great for taking walks to Bogert Park or Peets Hill. We take the dogs out at a minimum of 3 times daily, so it's nice to have those places to go. The house is very cool, and modern with a well-equipped kitchen and good bed linens. We like dealing with Paul (and his friend Chris). They are friendly and accessible. We ill be back. Thanks so much!

Great rental house!

We stayed 3 weeks. The kitchen was very well equipped. The manager was very responsive to problems - we had some burned out light bulbs that were promptly replaced. Location was incredibly convenient.
