About Carolyn Calfee
Hello and welcome to our vacation home in paradise! We are Carolyn and Tom Calfee, owners of Abiquiu Vacation Homes. We love helping guests discover Abiquiu while staying at one of our two Abiquiu Lake vacation homes: The Casita del Lago (two-bedroom, two-bath home) and Abiquiu Lake Mesa (one-bedroom, one-bath home). We enjoy sharing the beauty and magic of our home in the Land of Enchantment and allowing others to experience this incredible location…if you haven’t seen the sun rise or set over Abiquiu Lake and the red rocks, or, if you haven’t experienced an absence of noise and light pollution - then, well, you’ve missed the best part of Abiquiu. We have met people from all over the world who have discovered The Casita del Lago and Abiquiu Lake Mesa in Abiquiu Lake. Honestly, we are frequently surprised by how many people know about the little village of Abiquiu…how a couple in Australia heard about our home or why a guest from Spain would choose our home so he could swim (train) in Abiquiu Lake every morning. Meeting our guests - who quickly become part of our Casita del Lago family - is the best part of this experience. We pride ourselves in setting an example as honest, ethical hosts who want every guest to have a perfect experience. Because of this, we have a high rate of return guests. And this is why we continue to rent out our home: meeting new friends; the positive stories, reviews, and pictures; and guests who never want to leave at the end of their stay - that is the beauty of the vacation rental journey. Reach out to us at any time! Safe travels, Carolyn & Tom
Carolyn Calfee purchased this House in 2009
Why Carolyn Calfee chose Youngsville
Quite simply, this land on Abiquiu Lake found us. We found the most beautiful spot on planet earth back in 2009 - we couldn’t believe land surrounded by a lake, a river, million-year-old red rocks, and Pedernal was for sale. We purchased our land that very night. Eventually we built The Casita del Lago on the lakefront property and we absolutely treasure the wide-open spaces, starry night skies, sage green mesas, purple mountains and red rocks. We also deeply appreciate the culture, history of this area and the spiritual energy that makes this the "Land of Enchantment". There are only four Lakefront parcels in the area, and only one remains available for sale (and that is the property we own adjacent to Casita del Lago.) When you visit here, and you view many of the landscapes Georgia O'Keeffe painted in their original context, you will understand why she could never leave. Our home is built into the shore above Abiquiu Lake and the property extends down to the water (actually, into the middle of the lake!). There is an old cow path that you can follow to hike down to the water. Or, you can walk down the road or drive down to the water. We have a private cove at the shore of the water on our property that is perfect for swimming, fishing, floating or just relaxing. Other houses are located high up on the mesa tops overlooking the lake and do not have private lakefront property. If you aren't sure which home location is best for you, please message us.
What makes this House unique
The home is a rare lakefront property on Abiquiu Lake with 360’ degree panoramic views of The Land of Enchantment. We found the most beautiful spot in the world, and built the most beautiful home – which is what makes this vacation rental like no other. The home is located on 22 acres of lakefront property, in a gated community between Cerro Pedernal and Abiquiu Lake. The views, with the red rocks as the backdrop, are – quite simply – nothing short of spectacular. And these views cannot be seen from the public side of the lake. Waking up every morning to see the sun rise over the lake, and watching it set each evening, is a memory you will hold forever. But it’s not only the location and views that are unique. We built the home with attention to every detail. The Casita del Lago is built in traditional adobe style with 14' thick walls. The New Mexican charm is enhanced by the fully arched architectural doorways, hand carved wooden doors, unique granite, lit niches opposite the wood burning fireplace, and authentic furniture and art. The home also incorporates today’s most modern conveniences, such as flat screen TVs and WIFI. Bring your camera to photograph the vistas, relax in the outdoor seating areas, eat your meal on the outdoor picnic table overlooking the lake, take in the stars while soaking in the hot tub, light a fire indoors, or on the western portal, or venture out to the outdoor fire pit on the edge of an arroyo. Admire the sunrise, or heat up the eastern portal and enjoy it from the bench. Walk down to the water for solitude or to drop in a line. Raft, float and swim. Bring your own boat and moor it in our cove. Hike from your front door. Or, just curl up on the lounge chair and warm up to the afternoon sun. And - those are just a few of the daily options you have at Casita del Lago! Owners live locally and are available to assist when needed - and this is very important in our remote area! We have our own snow plow for snowy days.

This is an amazing property! The landscape is so beautiful. What struck me most was how quiet it was there. If you are searching for a peaceful retreat, this is it. The house is uniquely crafted and spotlessly clean. We hiked all over the property and enjoyed the hot tub underneath a full view of the milky way. It is isolated, but the drive in has stunning views. Make sure you buy groceries before coming to the house. I particularly enjoyed the underfloor heating on a cool morning. Carolyn was very easy to communicate with and was understanding when the pandemic cut our trip short. We are hoping to stay at this property again in the future
Epic landscape, perfect southwestern home
Loved being here with our kids. Wandering the property, following rock cairns, skipping rocks on the lakeshore, stargazing from the hot tub, drinking a beverage by the cracking chiminea fire, stacking rocks, hearing the mooing cows and honking geese, seeing the prairie dogs on the drive in (even saw a coyote early on morning!), exploring the nearby natural environs. What a perfect week we had!
Carolyn is extremely thoughtful. Thank you for the welcome basket and sweet note.
The property is nothing short of amazing.
We're pretty hard critics and i'm extremely high maintenance - even though I basically pack the whole house when taking a trip, I still wind up needing something. This place has it ALL! We cant wait to go back.
I admit staying for two weeks over Christmas so far from all things convenient worried me a bit - we are a family with two small children (3 & 5). I'm delighted to say that my worry was totally unfounded. The house is very very well stocked and Carolyn was an extraordinarily responsive and kind host. The kitchen was beautifully equipped with cooking staples, making my job of preparing all our meals so much easier and stress free. The views to the lake and surrounding area are as advertised and the house is every bit as lovely and clean as the photos depict. I don't recommend visiting with the intention of working remotely, as I did - internet is slow and AT&T cell service is troublesome. Plan to visit while happily disconnected - get out and EXPLORE. The landscape is breathtaking and humbling. We would absolutely stay here again.
Thank you!! So glad you loved your time and this magical spot. We are so glad you stayed with us and do hope you can come back this way again.
The property is awesome. Beautiful views, peaceful surroundings and great customer service. Only had one issue - could not get the heater to warm up enough; nevertheless, it was so nice!
Hi Rebecca, thank you so much for staying with us and we are so glad you two enjoyed your stay. Thank you also for the 5* review and highlighting our customer service - that is so important to us! Glad you experienced the peacefulness - that’s also how I describe the home! I’m sorry you wanted the home hotter and I wish you would have called me! We have two heating systems in the home - the main heating system and floor heat. You probably would have preferred the floor heat being turned up :-).
Beautiful get away.
This has been the best Property that we have rented so far. The views were spectacular inside and out. The hot tub was quite wonderful day or night. We will most definitely be back again.
Joseph, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. So glad you loved the home, space, views and hot tub! The hot tub is always a favorite seat! We look forward to your return! Best, Carolyn
