Located on Hana Bay, Tutu's House is an affordable, oceanfront duplex with two spacious one bedroom apartments. Each has a fully equipped kitchen and private back deck overlooking the ocean. The beach is just footsteps away. Lush tropical flowers and fruit trees surround the property. Please email us for the address to our website to see more pictures and for more information.
The Haia family was one of the first Hawaiian families to settle in Hana Maui. This property has been in our family since before property ownership was something recorded on paper. Tutu's House was originally built in the mid 1800's but has since been refurbished. We have tried to restore much of it's original plantation style charm. The Hana cultural center (museum)is located across the street and was founded by our family matriarch Babes Hanchett.
Jaimie Peters purchased this house in 1800
This property has been in the family for many generations. It's unique location on Hana Bay makes it a desired rental property.
The sound of the ocean is very relaxing. Hana Bay is just footsteps away where you can beachcomb, swim, fish, kayak, and snorkel. The property is full of tropical fruit trees including, mango, bananas, lime, mountain apple, tangerine, coconut and sour sop. Fragrant ginger, plumeria, and laua'e fern create a calming atmosphere.
My husband and I stayed at Tutu's House for a night and had a great visit. The house is in a great location, a short drive from restaurants, the general store, and some amazing beaches. We thought the house was great. We had our best night sleep of our entire trip, the bathroom was spacious, and the kitchen had everything you'd need to cook some meals. We didn't encounter any of the issues noted in previous negative reviews. While this house is not fancy like a hotel, it was comfortable, clean, and had everything we needed.
My husband and I stayed at Tutu's House for one night while visiting Hana. While the house is older, it is a taste of Hawaii that you will not find staying at a fancy condo or hotel in the area. The house, which is a duplex, sits directly on Hana Bay itself, with the sound of the waves lapping (or crashing!) onto the rocks below. Fantastic! That evening, the moon was full and the view from our porch of the moonlight on the water was stunning. We did not encounter any bugs and found the place to be very clean. If you are looking for an affordable place to stay that feels like Hawaii, stay at Tutu's House. Within easy walking distance to shops and restaurants in Hana.
"Tutu" means grandma in Hawaiian and that's precisely what you'll get. It smells like grandma, it's decorated by grandma, it's maintained by grandma. This place is one step above hostel and is better suited for a group of guys or gals looking to stay together. I wouldn't have minded this place when I was in my 20s and traveling with friends. Because of the smells and age it's not a very romantic place for a couple on a honeymoon.
-Spacious. Big living room with big couch. Big bed. Doesn't feel cramped.
-Great location near Hana's center. Walking distance to Red Sands, general store, and food carts.
-On the shore. No beach access but you can hear the ocean from the bedroom
-Great front and back porch areas for outside eating or lounging
-Smells like mildew, body odor, and dust
-Linens smelled funky. Bring pillow cases. My wife and I used clean shirts.
-Stains on couch and bed. Not easy to relax or feel comfortable.
-Termites and cockroaches
-Feels old and not cared for
The place was OK as we entered but has no AC at all.... we could live with that. Everything was older style and smelled moldy that was fine too... but when after taking a shower I stuffed my face into a brown stinky towel..... that was it for me. Out of like 4 towels only one actually smelled clean. Oh, and the mosquitos are everywhere even when you try to keep the doors closed. Can't wait to leave!!!!!
the thought of whose face or other body parts (running to store to get sanitizer as I type!!) were wiped with that towel will haunt me for a while. :(((((
Happy to report we have had no roach sightings.
Never again, thank you very much.
After reading many reviews of Tutu's we decided to book. Believing that Tutu's would suit us well as we anticipated a small Maui homestead that blended well with what Hana is about. Yes, cock roaches we would deal with being that it is the rain forest and even the antiquity of the home was all good. As long as it was clean and with amenities, was our only concern. Well, this was not the case. It was NOT clean and had very few amenities. All the fans in the house looked to have not been cleaned in years, the base boards were dirty, mold on the shower curtain liner, spots or stains on the bed spread, old cheap dirty curtains, the smell of mold was present, the wicker chair at the counter was cheap and falling apart, an accident waiting to happen. The amenities was barebones and the absolutely cheapest quality. The silverware was one step up from plastic, one broken ice cube tray in the run down fridge, ants on the kitchen counter. No dish rags. Beach towels were only on request. And the list goes on... And yes cock roaches out in the rain forest are to be expected. So I guess we should not complain about the cock roach that my husband killed at 4:00 a.m. that was in bed with us. If the owners would clean and upgrade to show that they care and are proud of "Tutu's House", it would be a wonderful place to stay. Tutu's does have a very special backyard overlooking the ocean that we did enjoy very much!
My son, his wife and I stayed here for 4 nights. It was the perfect place for us - lots of space to spread out and many wonderful seating areas to just relax. Tutu's House it is not new but it is perfect just as is if you want a non tourist experience. We ate all our meals in and the kitchen was adequately furnished to make this easy. We enjoyed eating on the back lanai to the sound of breaking waves. Also a lovely sound to fall asleep and wake up to. The beach is right around the corner and town is a short drive away. Thank you for making our trip so enjoyable.
