Michigan Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 5 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 12)

Great vacation rental in best Saugatuck location! One of just a few private homes on the Oval Beach Road, this classic hundred-year-old cottage with guest house is nestled into the side of a wooded sand dune. In a great location surrounded by woods and walking trails, Oval Beach Cottage is steps from the Kalamazoo River, Saugatuck's chain ferry, and a 1/2 mile down the road from the beautiful Oval Beach.

Spread out over three floors, there are four bedrooms and 2.5 baths in the main house. A fabulous wrap-around screen porch offers tree-top views of the river and town of Saugatuck, and there is a hot tub to relax in at the end of the day. A large living/dining area with a cozy wood burning stove makes this a great house for entertaining, and country antiques add to Oval Beach Cottage’s warmth and rustic charm.

Guest House:

Just up a wooded path is the guest house (Acorn), a cozy one-room log cabin that is perfect for two. Acorn has barn-beam cathedral ceilings, a fireplace, small kitchen and bath, and a deck high up in the tree-tops.

This is truly a delightful spot

About Mark

We love this very special area of the country.

The woods, the dunes, the beach, the farms, the antique stores, farmer's markets, light houses, fog horns, great restaurants, art galleries and the historical charm.

Mark purchased this cottage in 1998

Why Mark chose Michigan

Our family has owned cottages in Saugatuck for over 75 years! Wanted a classic summer cottage in a great location. We think ours is very special.

What makes this cottage unique

It is hard to beat the location of this property.

You can walk just a few steps to the Chain Ferry that crosses

the Kalamozoo River and puts you in the heart of downtown Saugatuck (beats the parking woes!). Wooded walking trails, views of the sailboats coming down the river and super close to the beach!

As the last house on Oval Beach Road, the beach is less than a 1/2 mile.

Wonderful Four day weekend

  • 5 of 5

We had a group of 8 adults - we had a great time lost of fun - we had pletny of room - one couple even slept in the tree house. We were able to walk to Oval Beach - climb the 300 stairs to Old Baldy. We went for a Paddle boat ride, saw a comedien in town, walked the town, and our favorite played games on the wrap around porch - thanks for a wonderful weekend.

Perfect house for our family

  • 5 of 5

Dear Phillips family,

We just went to book our week at Oval Beach Cottage, and were quite surprised to see the latest review referring to mold/mildew. We have stayed in this cottage annually for five years, and never had a problem with this. In fact, every year the cottage has been improved, and you clearly try hard to make it comfortable for all. The staff has always been accommodating, and were quick to fix any glitch we may have encountered. We have stayed in many houses over the years, but Oval Beach Cottage captures the vintage summerhouse charm we are looking for. Not easy to find in rental homes (I also learned that the owner is a writer for Coastal Living magazine…which is obvious in the tasteful decor). Confused by the last review, but we will be back for our regular week in June! Counting the days…

Very rustic

  • 1 of 5

This cottage has a great location, but that's about it. Very rustic. OLD. No AC so beware, everything feels damp. There are 30 narrow steps to shlep all your belongings up. Very dark and musty. We cut our stay short due to the conditions. We have rented variously places for over 20 years, this was by far the worst and most disappointing.

Has a lot going for it, but...

  • 3 of 5

This old house has a lot of charm. It's tastefully decorated with antiques, comfortable seating, and cozy bed linens; it looks and feels like a lake home, which is what we like. The big wrap-around porch is terrific; we spent a lot of time out there. The location is great with its proximity to beautiful Oval Beach, and the ferry into town is steps away.

Unfortunately, one of the bedrooms—the one that sleeps 4—is literally an extension of the basement laundry/mud room. It has little to no privacy, and as most of that part of the house is below ground and must not have adequate drainage, it has a serious mold problem. There was also an unpleasant odor coming from behind a locked door in that room (labeled "Private"). The mold and mildew was so bad that it extended from the basement room to the living room above, and into all of the upholstered furniture. Two of us had to resort to taking allergy medications and using rescue inhalers for asthma. Until the owners deal with the mold problem, they should be forthcoming about it, as staying in the house is no "vacation" for people who suffer from mold allergies and asthma.

Renters should also be aware that the bars across the river play very, very loud live music on some nights—one night past 1:30 AM—and some of the boats docked nearby also occasionally blast music for hours. The house is situated in such a way that it sounds like the amplifier is right outside the bedroom window. It didn't happen every night, thank heavens.

Owner's Response: We are so sorry that your stay at our cottage was not what you had expected. We are surprised to hear of these issues over three months after your stay—and not during, when we could have assisted you. We have owned the cottage for twenty years, and NEVER had a complaint of mold/mildew, and were shocked by that. Our own family with young children, had just spent a month at the cottage, and saw no signs of any mold or mildew. The bunkroom is NOT below ground, but is the first floor of the cottage, and has its own bathroom and deck. Nor is it an extension of the laundry room, but a clearly delineated space, with a wall dividing the two. But it is a bunkroom, and so, there is little privacy. The room marked “Private” that you referred to, has open access, as it is where the fuse box is. If you had opened the door, you would see that it is where extra fans and cleaning supplies are stored. As stated, the cottage is in the woods and probably not a good place for people with severe allergies or extreme asthma. As for sound, yes, on big holiday weekends—like the fourth of July when you stayed, the bands do play, and the sound does carry through town and across the river. Luckily, most nights are quiet. Our family had just checked out the week before and much work was done--flowers planted, carpets cleaned, wicker painted, new cushions on the porch furniture, slip covers and curtains laundered, bedrooms given a fresh coat of paint…and the house was in wonderful condition. It is always disappointing when our guests are not completely happy, and we are sorry that was the case. We love our cottage and try very hard to make it nice for all. Sincerely, The Phillips Family

Awesome week at Oval Beach Cottage

  • 5 of 5

I agree with the other reviews. This is a great home for hosting a large family beach getaway. The home is well maintained and well appointed for everything you may need to make your beach vacation enjoyable - close access to beach & town via the ferry, hot tub for those that want it, outdoor picnic table, well equipped kitchen for preparing and serving dinner, wood burning stove for after dinner marshmallow roasting , and great areas for groups as well as that quiet place to read a book or relax. We had ages 11 to mid-50s and everyone found it roomy and what they wanted.

Couples Get-Away

  • 4 of 5

5 couples stayed at the lovely Oval Beach property for a week-long get-away the week of August 31st (Labor Day weekend). The weather could not have been any nicer. We all walked every day (the beach is only .5 miles away and it is a fabulous/picturesque walk), followed by coffee in the rocking chairs on the wrap-around porch, followed by a ride on the chain ferry to endless shopping, restaurants and water sports. We felt very secluded "up in the trees" while at the Oval Beach property. The "rustic" feel of the Oval Beach property added a more outdoorsy experience to our trip, which was a treat for all of us. The whole experience allowed for us to fully relax and enjoy our time together.
