Northport Cottage Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms 2 bath sleeps 5+. Spectacular water views from every room!

Sunny Side, one of the great historic cottages of Bayside Village in Northport Maine was built in 1885 and was completely rebuilt in 2010. Sunny Side is a two bedroom two bath cottage with an open downstairs floor plan featuring a wrap around porch, two living areas and a large, gourmet kitchen / dining area. A 250 square foot second floor deck has lounge chairs and a table that seats six. The deck has an incredible view! Sunny Side sits perched on a bluff with 110 degree views of Penobscot Bay. And a view from every room in the house. We are just a short 80 foot walk to ocean's edge. Come relax on the porch, read in a cozy nook, or kayak to your heart's content on the Bay. Sunny Side had all new beds and furniture mixed with a delightful group of antiques of the period. Downstairs bath is equipped with grab bars in the shower stall. You will love this house! Sunny Side sleeps five in a King, a Queen, and a twin, There is a pull-out Queen sofa in the living room.

The Kitchen: The kitchen is an open plan and opens out to the family room, which faces the bay. There is a small dining area and a breakfast bar. Gourmet Appliances, Jen-Aire cooktop, Frigidaire side by side with icemaker and water dispenser. Dishwasher. Ceiling height in the downstairs rooms are 10 feet. There is a washer dryer in the basement, accessible through the garage.

The parlor: In the original part of the house, on the first floor is a small cozy seating area, and the stairs to the second floor all surrounding the original double doors of the house which open out onto the covered front porch. Sit outside here on graceful chairs and watch your children play in the 'square' of park that is Merithew Square. There are two beautiful maple shade trees in the front yard to keep the house cool during those August afternoons. This room is a perfect place to watch the world go by while catching up on some reading or checking your email.

The Family Room: Your back door opens into the family room, in the new addition off the rear of the house. This large room has two sets of sliding glass doors that open onto the wrap around balcony overlooking Penobscot Bay to the East and the old water pump in Merithew Square to the South. This sunny room will provide the perfect place for family togetherness as it opens onto the kitchen area. The family room is a delightful mix of antique wicker new upholstered furniture, and antiques.

About Seth Thayer

We have owned and been renting cottages in Bayside for 9 years now and are locally owned and operated. We moved to Maine from Chicago about 13 years ago and found the Northport/ Belfast area by accident. Now we never want to leave! We love it here for all there is to do and see. Come experience Maine at its best! Coming soon is a hip 2400 sf 3 bdrm/3ba apartment right in the heart of downtown Belfast.

Seth Thayer purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Seth Thayer chose MidCoast and Penobscot Bay

Sunny Side is an incredible property with views of Sears Island, Islesboro and Penobscot Bay from every room in the house. When we bought Sunny Side, we could have pushed the house over by ourselves. We spent 10 months essentially building a new house inside the period shell, but it was worth it! Sunny side has good flow and excellent presence in the village.

What makes this cottage unique

Completely renovated baths, new kitchen, new furniture, new beds. Its hard finding this kind of comfort in the old cottages of Bayside. Sunny Side has the perfect mix of the charm of Bayside with the convenience of having modern amenities!!

Spectacular for Relaxing and Exploring

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here for 7 weeks this spring and it was the best! Wish we could have stayed longer. The description and photos are true, with the exception of understating how fantastic it is! Clean, spacious (for a cottage with this view), available but not intrusive owners, sensational neighborhood, and great location for exploring midcoast Maine. We would recommend it for anyone and hope to get back next year, even if for a shorter stay.

Our family consists of 2 adults, 2 young kids (4 & 5) and two dogs -- not an easy bunch to accommodate. Sunnyside had everything we needed while all our things were in storage. The open spaces and park for kids to play in was so nice. Watching the boats come in and out while having our coffee or cocktails was delightful. Access to laundry was necessary and provided. The owners have really thought of everything to make a long term stay enjoyable.

It was easy for us to do our house hunting in the Bangor area and visit family in the Portland area from here. We had so much fun taking the kids for activities like visiting state parks, beaches, ferry rides, lobster boat tours, lighthouse hunts, harbors and more. And when we weren't out the kids loved playing in the park across the street or down the hill, walking on the beach, watching the boats, riding their bikes around the neighborhood or down to the store for ice cream.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend staying at Sunnyside for as long as you can, actually, I encourage it. It's good for the soul.

Owner's Response: You guys are amazing! You started out with me at Little Bohemia in 2009, came to Sunny Side that first summer it was finished in 2010 and have been my coveted renters ever since. Just sorry you didn't get to have your grand dogs with you this trip! Look forward to welcoming you next summer! Best, Seth

Great house with not-so-great owner

  • 3 of 5

The physical house was just what we wanted, good location, plenty of room for two adults and two teenage girls and pet friendly. Good kitchen and facilities however the grill is a "tail-gate" type grill and total inadequate for cooking a real meal.

Parking is tight since the garage will not actually fit a medium SUV but washer and dryer in the garage are new.

The owner is another issue altogether. I met Seth during our stay and was surprised when the post stay comment came via email. Seth is the actual person that cleans and sets up the house each rental. Claiming we didn't clean the house properly, I was charged for his "overtime" to clean. He complained about excessive garbage (two 33 gallon bags) but didn't complain about excessive recyclables since they were left for Seth to give to his charity.

His idea of post stay cleanup is far beyond the normal requirement, "broom swept" means broom swept not vacuumed, mopped and shined.

We were charged for a plant stand table that was on the deck when we arrived (although Seth claimed it was not) because it was rained on.

Seth claimed I never disclosed the fact that my bulldog made the trip with us but he saw the dog when he visited during our stay. I apparently was never charged the dog fee but, since he cashed my security deposit check, I consider the debt paid.

I can go on but I think the picture is painted.

Great house but beware the owner and his "rules".

Owner's Response: You told me you had a great week, but are now mad that I was forced to cash your security deposit because of the state in which you left my house. Here is why I had to cash your $300.00 deposit: This renter never disclosed that he was bringing his dog for the week. We have a pet friendly policy: $150 per week per dog, limit two dogs. Simple as that. The renter was not initially charged for the dog because we didn't know the dog was going to be a guest. The dog fee was then taken out of the security deposit as it should be. The extra teenager was not disclosed either...not that it matters, and it didn't affect the deposit, , but for logistical purposes, it is always nice to know how many people are staying in my home. In his review, the reviewer failed to disclose ruined upholstery on a chair, urine stains from the dog (I hope) on the bedding, which had to be replaced, excessive garbage AND recycling (nine bags of kitchen garbage shoved into three 33 gallon bags...a bit much for what we thought was three people staying). The garbage also did not affect the security deposit In the client's own words, they were in Bayside with three other families and our cottage was used for the parties. It took over three times the normal cleaning time to get the cottage back to its spotless state, and as stated in the contract, excessive cleaning charges were taken from the security deposit as well. The renters left the place in a terrible state: dog hair everywhere, the teenage girls used the floor of their room as a trashcan for all their candy wrappers and chewed gum (on which I stepped). There was dog feces and chocolate smeared in places on our porch....nice family, but it took two of us five hours to clean up after their stay. Gross is what I would call their personal habits. $150.00 was charged for excessive cleaning and property damage listed above. The grill is a gas Webber grill, fine for a family of four, but probably not good enough for parties involving three house loads full of people. I have owned and have been renting cottages in Bayside since 2008. Until last year, I had two houses for rent. This is only the second time in all that time that I felt the need to cash the security deposit for damages done. The last time I cashed a security deposit, I kept $50.00 for cleaning and returned the rest. Mark and his family are not renters that I would recommend.

We arrived at Sunnyside on October 1st, 2015. it was the perfect place for us. The neighborhood was very quaint and so beautiful. We had an awesome view of the bay. Even though the bedrooms upstairs has a small hall between; as two couples we did not invade on each other's privacy at all. It was the perfect place for us to be able to go to Bar Harbor, Baxter State Park, Camden, Boothbay, etc. If we were to return to Maine, we would definitely go back to Sunnyside. Thank you Greg and Seth, we had an awesome time.

Owner's Response: Thank you all so much for coming! You saw more of Maine in a week than I have in 15 years! Glad you had such an excellent time, and the leaves were the best I've seen in years!! Cheers!

Great Location!

  • 4 of 5

Great location and water view. Well furnished cottage centrally located for day trips to Camden, Linconville, Rockport, Bar Harbor etc. Only thing missing is a TV downstairs. There is one in one bedroom, but it is not convenient for more than one family. Also could use more towels so you wouldn't have to wash so often.

Owner's Response: Hi, thanks for your review and your stay at Sunny Side. While we feel that two full-sized towels per guest along with loads of washcloths is enough for a week's stay, we will take your comments under advisement. I did notice that one full sized towel was missing, so I apologize for that, There is a full sized washer / dryer at the cottage. We also have a philosophy about TVs and vacations and several of our guests have commented that is is nice not to have at TV downstairs because it promotes conversation and book reading among our guests. We haven't had a TV in our house since 1992 and so we try to foster the same feeling in our rental houses. It is Vacationland after all!! Thanks again

Bayside Village in Northport Maine is situated approximately 10 miles north of Camden and 3 miles south of Belfast in the area known as 'midcoast Maine.' We are very close to hiking in the Camden Hills State Park, whale watching in Bar Harbor, the Farnsworth museum in Rockland, The Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockport, and the fantastic Colby Museum of Art in Waterville. An eclectic mix of restaurants await. There is Primo in Rockland, The Edge in Lincolnville, and Francine's in Camden. Marshall Wharf Brewing in Belfast usually has 15 of their own brews on tap next door at 3Tides, one of the finest taverns in Maine. Sightseeing is beautiful, Take the ferry to Islesboro, Vinalhaven, or Monhegan, or take the short 6 mile drive down to Lincolnville Beach and comb the sandy beach and have a lobster roll.

Golf: Take a cart around the public Northport golf course with it's circa 1910 clubhouse. This is a beautiful course and a great place to get out and swing some clubs. We are approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes from the Belgrade Lakes Golf Club, voted one of the top 100 public courses in 2009. A Clive Clark design, the course is worth a day trip from here.

Sunnyside is one of the Grande Dames of Merithew Square in the Historic Village of Bayside. We have recently purchased Sunnyside and are in the midst of a complete renovation. The photos you see here are the before pictures. The exterior of the house will be painted and will have more appropriate windows upstairs. The interior will be an open floor plan downstairs with a bath down and will have two large bedrooms with high ceilings (walls will go up to the peak) and a bathroom with a shower/tub combo. Check back with us to see more photos. We also own the house 'Little Bohmeia' a wonderful 1907 Arts and Crafts cottage, which you can find on this website. The interior of Sunnyside will be just as comfortable as Little Bohemia's interior.
