I stayed there with my husband and our daughters family and have to say I would not go back to this rental!! The views that are shown in the pictures of the rental are very deceiving to say the least. From the upper deck all you can see if overgrown vegetation and a small section of the bay and the lower deck looks over what may appear to be a salvage yard. We were shown around by the owners wife and when we got to the lower level where the second bedroom was along with the washer & dryer we noticed an "out of order" sign on the washer. When asked about it we were told that it just broke the day before we arrived and would be fixed as soon as possible. That did not happen we had to call the owner to repair it so we could wash our clothes seeing we tried to pack light. After we did 2 loads for 6 people the out of order sign went right back on it and was not fully repaired for several more days. In the review they also do not tell you that both the machines are coin operated requiring $1.50 for each load! It is not easy to find coins on a small island
The first morning when we woke we noticed that refrigerator was not cold and we were afraid all the food we bought would spoil We called the owner left a message with his wife and headed to the beach, when we returned it was still not cold. The owner did not show till later that night, when he saw it was not cold he told us we must have left it open too long when we were putting away the food. He then brought up another (older fridge) to see if it would get cold, which it did not but was on our deck for several days. He did end up getting a new one but by then the fridge was finally cold.
The third night there we decided to grill, well we were not half way done cooking when the gas ran out! Again another call to the owner who brought a new tank the next night, after we had to finish cooking our supper in the house oven. I would have thought these things would have been checked before our arrival.
There were several other small things that happened that we were able to overlook, but I would not ever go back to this villa!!
After reading the previous good review on this budget accommodation I had high hopes for it. Our stay at Villa Calabreeze lasted for 4 nights. We had booked it for 10 nights. First, a minor point, the view represented in the pictures does not exist. Directly in front of and onto the porch extremely large foliage is growing that totally obstructs any view or breeze there may be. Now for the big points. The a/c in the bedroom was broken and has been for some time. John, the owner told us to run it on "fan" because the noise it makes "bothers them" (their house is directly above Calabreeze). It literally rattled the window, did nothing to cool the room and so we just shut it down. There are fans, but really with the entire porch blocked allowing no air in, that bedroom was really hot. On the second evening we started noticing the cockroaches in the kitchen cupboard, drawers and then in the bedroom(our daughters downstairs bedroom too). On night 4 when my husband had something crawling on him during the night, we decided to leave. the next morning he went up to their house to talk to John and Cindy his wife came out of their house. He told her about the cockroaches and the a/c and said that we were leaving and she said that they had a death in their family and John was out making travel arrangements back to the States. She said to listen for Johns motorcycle and talk to him when he returns and then she said "I can't handle this and turned and left my husband standing in the driveway". Not knowing how long he was going to be and not wanting to sit and wait for him and intrude on them when they were dealing with a death, we packed up, left the keys with a note and left. We called once during the rest of our stay but got no answer so we waited until our return home to call again. One call to Cindy who screamed "No Refunds-stop harassing us!" and then slammed the phone on my husband and one call to John two days later who blamed us for leaving after he had "fixed" the problems. He said "No Refunds" and wouldn't even let my husband speak, sounding very perturbed that we had even bothered calling him. He took absolutely ZERO responsibility for the problems and also slammed the phone on my husband. We found alternate accommodations but lost quite a bit of money in the process. How can you rent your place to someone with cockroaches and then be surprised when they leave?
Our party of two couples enjoyed our stay at Calabreeze. The quiet side of the island and the town of Coral Bay were great for us. The house was clean and comfortable, and the owners were friendly and unobtrusive, happy to answer questions. Our day sail with Pebbles/Killer with mangrove snorkeling at Hurricane Hole (starfish colony, colorful coral, anemone) was one of the highlights of the week. The bedroom AC units were a plus during a warm week; they were a bit loud but helped block the noise of the all-night roosters! Relaxing every evening on the deck after dinner was a delight. The first couple of driveway adventures were white-knuckle events, but our intrepid driver and 4-wheel drive jeep turned it into entertainment as the week progressed. We enjoyed snorkeling all over the island, but our best was a late afternoon snorkel at Maho Bay (eel, rays, and turtles). We recommend Pickles in Paradise for breakfast, lunch fixings, and wifi. Indigo Grill had good dinner, outdoor seating, and very good pizza. Overall, Calabreeze and Coral Bay are a winning pair on St. John.
BEAUTIFUL home and views. Home was clean and neat. Owner was awesome, took us for ride on his sailboat, hot tub was a nice treat as well. Wouldn't have changed a thing about this house. Rep from rental company met us as planned on time. Tip for first timers: shut the windows at night. We thought the island breeze and sounds of the waves would be nice and relaxing, and they were. But the chickens and roosters on the islands are up later than we were, figured out to shut the windows the second night and problem solved. Beautiful, beautiful place. Will definitely be back, hopefully sooner rather than later.
Our family of 5 had a great stay at Cindy & John's villa. The house is built with beautiful blue stone, with a porch overlooking Coral Bay, and a hot spa to soak and relax after a day of beach or hiking. The furnishing are not new but comfortable, and kitchen is well equipped, so we saved a fortune by cooking many of the meals. A rental vehicle (SUV best) is a must, and driving to everywhere (Cruz Bay, ~20 min, beaches, 20~30 min) is thrilling. The only thing is that bug bites are frequent when we forgot to apply bug repellent, but that's a given with a lush tropical island.
The location was perfect for us. Located slightly above Coral Bay with a nice view and was centered for our adventure on St. John. Snorkeling Brown Bay, Haulover north and south, Salt Pond Bay, Hanson Bay,and Long Bay were the best places to snorkel. Grabing a burger or Mai Mai sandwich at Skinny Legs or Shipwrecks and a cold one after snorkeling was perfect. The place was clean and appealing with always a nice breeze blowing from the bay. A day sail with John was a plus and the history of the boat, the people and St.John was cool. Cindy was helpful on the pretravel and what ever you need there.
Thanks again John & Cindy & Pebbles for the stay.
