This is our personal home which we have completely remodeled. This beach bungalow located on Moran Lake in Santa Cruz, near Capitola, is breathtaking and feels like your personal spa retreat. Situated in a very quiet neighborhood, it feels so removed from city life, yet close to all amenities. The beach is a 5 minute walk away, with Pleasure Point, the best surfing spot in Santa Cruz, 5 minutes in the other direction with panoramic views of Monterey Bay. Or stay in and relax in your own Hot Springs spa on the back deck. The home is open with lots of natural light from large windows overlooking the lake and feels larger than the square footage. The kitchen has all you need with a 1956 antique O'Keefe and Merritt gas stove. (It works great!) There are two large decks in the back that overlook the lake with peeks of Moran beach through the eucalyptus trees. The home is a mix of Asian and Hawaiian decor furnished with Japanese antiques. So we ask that you treat it with special care.
There is so much to do in Santa Cruz, it's almost difficult to know where to start. Santa Cruz and the Monterey area have many recreational and cultural diversions to keep you busy and entertained. The Santa Cruz Mountains provide wonderful hiking, mountain biking, and exploring in the beautiful state parks including Big Basin with its ancient redwoods, Nisene Marks, and Henry Cowell. Local attractions include the Beach Boardwalk, yacht harbor, municipal and Capitola wharfs, Monterey Aquarium, Elkhorn Slough, the Mystery Spot and the downtown Pacific Garden mall. UC Santa Cruz, Cabrillo Community College, and the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium offer many cultural events such as the annual Shakespeare Festival during the summer, musicals and plays, and symphony. The Boardwalk offers free outdoor concerts on Fridays during the summer. There also are wonderful local wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains and Monterey with several wine festivals during the year. Water sports abound with world class surfing, sailing, fishing, kayaking, windsurfing, kitesurfing, swimming, diving (some of the most challenging but beautiful diving in the world) and paddle surfing. Santa Cruz is a very bike friendly town with bike lanes all through town and along the coastline. And there are many golf courses nearby and in Monterey.
There are also phenomenal restaurants and eateries all within a few minutes walk or drive. Is there a particular kind of cuisine you enjoy? I'm sure you can find it somewhere in Santa Cruz. We have several farmer's markets which provide some of the most delicious, freshest produce (mostly organic) and bakery items. Nearest movie theaters are only a mile away.
Come to play, explore, or relax. Our home and the environs will definitely allow for all.
Laura has lived in this house for 30 years. She grew up in Hawaii. Tony has lived in San Jose until they married. We have spent the last few years remodeling the entire house; doing much of the work ourselves. We are so happy with the results. However, we have relocated for a while to care for Laura's parents in Hawaii. We plan to return to Santa Cruz but for now our home is available to you. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
Tony purchased this house in 1984
Since growing up in Hawaii, living near the ocean is crucial despite our long commute to work in Silicon Valley. When we descend from the Summit on Highway 17 towards Santa Cruz, a soothing feeling comes over us and all the stresses of the day melt away. We love Santa Cruz because of the temperate weather (it rarely goes over 80 degrees), the outdoor activities, easy access to cultural events, as well as being close enough to enjoy Monterey, San Jose, and San Francisco. People seem much more friendly, easy-going and neighborly in Santa Cruz.
We love the short walk to the beach. We often would catch the sunset, strolling along the water's edge or walking along the opposite side of the lake. Sometimes we would take some wood down to the beach and have a cozy fire, roasting smores or watching the meteor showers. Or for a different view, we would go to Pleasure Point and watch the surfers. We also enjoy having our meals out on our deck overlooking the lake or sitting in our spa at sunset or under the full moon. I love that there are outside views from every room and the picture window in the grand room frames one of the best views.
I just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our recent stay at your charming home in Santa Cruz. Everyone felt very comfortable and relaxed in that beautiful setting.
I echo comments of the other reviewers. Our family of 4 adults stayed here over Labor Day weekend and could not have been more pleased. House is beautifully upgraded with a gorgeous bathroom and well-appointed kitchen, comfy beds, and large common space that still permits various simultaneous activities: cooking, dining, playing games, watching TV, etc. But, frankly, we spent most of our time away, including daily walk along Pleasure Point and other sightseeing activities & day trip up PCH with detour thru Butano State Park (gorgeous hidden redwood forest gem!) to SF. The Pleasure Point area of Santa Cruz is one of our favorite places to stay because of the charming neighborhood, fabulous walkway along the bluffs (lots of marine life and surfers to watch) and proximity to the beach. Loved waking up to the views of the lagoon, and the sunset over the sea was terrific (esp w/ a glass of wine on the deck). The hot tub was a real bonus. Enjoyed the annual Begonia Festival in Capitola--who knew? Though the kitchen is well stocked with all the basics & more (plus an ocean view!) we wound up only cooking 1 meal here because we hit lots of our favorite eating spots: Gayles in Capitola; Kelly's on the West side; Pour, Hoffman's & dancing at the Blue Lagoon downtown SC; Bittersweet for brunch in Aptos; and Cafe Tiramasu & the Tonga Room Sat night in San Francisco. Great to come back to this relaxing home at the end of each day. Owners were great communicators and booking was a breeze. Would definitely recommend to others. Thanks so much for making this lovely home available for us!
Great amenities at the house. Short walk, no traffic, to great beach. Park like setting. Great hot tub after full day at the boardwalk. Great breakfast burritos a short walk away at Pleasure Point. Great beach vibes. Friendly people walking near the beach. Recommended.
Our family spent a week at this house during a family vacation to visit family in Santa Cruz. The house was amazing, perfectly clean, well-maintained and nicely appointed. It was 4th of July weekend, but even that didn't disturb the peace of this house. The back deck is as perfect as it looks, with the hot tub on the deck, grilling and relaxing by the fire. The beach is a simple walk, of maybe 5 minutes or less and you can easily walk down to Pleasure Point, if surfing is your thing. The house isn't convenient walking to the bustle of downtown or Capitola or even the harbor (though we did walk to Capitola - about 1.5/2 miles), but it's an easy drive to any of those places, but if your aim is to avoid that bustle, this is a perfect location. If you're looking for peace and quiet, you won't find a more amazing house. From the business side, the owners Tony and Laura were incredibly responsive, pleasant and easy to deal with. We're already planning our next visit!
We can’t imagine a better place to stay in Santa Cruz. (We lived here for three winter months, January through March.) The house itself is immaculate, with large windows looking out onto a lagoon and down to a nearby neighborhood beach. One of the neighbors told us he thinks the view from Tony and Laura’s place is “one of the best in Santa Cruz,” and he’s right. The lagoon is surrounded by towering eucalyptus trees. There is a lovely deck above the lagoon with a hot tub that’s kept ready to go for you. The beach, just a five-minute walk, is a friendly, neighborhood beach
The bathroom and kitchen are very modern, the fireplace is a treat if the weather turns cold (which it almost never does), and the tv-watching nook is totally comfy.
And in our view, all of that isn’t even the best part. In just five minutes, you can walk in one direction and be on the walkway above Pleasure Point, looking out over the Monterey Bay and one of the most famous surfing destinations in the world. We walked there every morning before dawn to watch the sun come up. And if you walk five minutes in the other direction, down through those eucalyptus trees, you’re at the beach – where you can relax in the sun or, at day’s end, watch the sunset.
How many places are there, anywhere, where you can do both of those things in just a short walk? Tony and Laura are marvelous, friendly, fair, and quick to deal with anything about the place you may not understand. We’ve already reserved our chance to come back.

My friends and I had a great time here. The house is very nice-thoughtfully equipped and furnished. I especially liked the kitchen and the backyard. The location is also very good-a very short walk from a nice beach. Tony and Laura are very responsive and easy to deal with. I left some clothing at the house and they were kind enough to mail it back to me in a timely fashion. I would love to return here in the future.
Dear Tony and Laura,
Thank you so much for allowing me and my tennis friends to enjoy your beautiful beach house,. We were a group of 5 ladies and the house was very comfortable for all of us. We cooked in both nights utilizing your beautifully remodeled kitchen. The back yard view of the river is stunning. I really liked the short walk to beach or just hanging out at Pleasure Point watching the surfers do their thing. I most definitely will recommend your place and will also return. Thanks again.
