Dating from 1450, Embessy Cottage is believed to be the oldest cottage in Twyford, a riverside village just 3 miles south of Winchester. Heavily beamed and filled with charm and character, this historical cottage is comfortably furnished, and enjoys a peaceful setting with a sheltered south-facing garden.

Twyford, once regularly visited by Benjamin Franklin, is an attractive village with 2 inns, a shop, pretty riverside walks and wilder hikes on the South Downs. Historic Winchester with its magnificent Cathedral, College and Great Hall are 5 minutes away by car. London, Portsmouth, Southampton and the New Forest, as well as Bournemouth, the Isle of Wight, Salisbury and Stonehenge, and even Oxford and Chichester are all within an hour’s journey. It is a perfect central base for visiting the South of England with excellent motorway access. A rail station half a mile distant, links to fast London services (60 min).

We own and manage all our properties, which are in and around Winchester. We have been letting this cottage for the last 20 years to many happy holiday makers and business travellers. We live very near so are on hand to help you with anything you may need.

Ebessy cottage is a truly delightful place to stay. Very homely, comfortable, spacious

Private. It's proper chocolate box but with all the modern needs like wifi TV etc.

It has a stunning private garden, a perfect place to sit and enjoy the bird life in particular.

Located in a really quiet street bar the school run, 2 mins walk to nearest pub 'the Phoenix' good pub food friendly and dogs welcome.

3 mins walk and you have the more upmarket Bugle and a well stocked but very pricey village shop with a great cafe restaurant underneath.

You can pretty much step out of the door and walk in any direction into beautiful countryside, it's a stunning village.

Winchester 10 mins drive but you can walk there, or catch the local bus or train.

Peaceful, well-connected, Nature

I am very happy of having already become part slightly of the story of the Embassy Cottage. It has been a really lovely staying. That’s why I am going to capitalise each of its qualities: Comfortable, Peaceful, Well-Connected, Fully Furnished and Lovely Decorated. Really worth a visit. I could not use the well maintained private garden, maybe next. it is not possible to stand in the bath to shower, but it is not a problem, you can get by with it. You can park in the driveway. The motorway is just 2 minutes by car. With the railway just by 10 minutes walking you could go whatever you wanted, so Ideally located for exploring the south of England. Wi-Fi works well. Winchester is just one station away. Beautiful woods nearby. Many thanks to the landlady for being so attentive

Not As Advertised

Only after check-in are guests instructed that they must clean up after themselves and leave the cottage ready for next guest -- or lose their deposit. Of the 14 holiday cottage weekly rentals we rented this summer, this was the only cottage that required that guests leave the cottage cleaned for the next guest. Because departing guests would give it a superficial cleaning, Embassy Cottage was the most in need of a deep cleaning. Another surprise: Guests are prohibited from using the living room fireplace pictured prominently on the HomeAway website - a big disappointment as we had some chilly windy rainy weather during our week's stay. Heavy mildew smell in the ground floor bedroom. For our 14 week holiday in Britain, we let (rented) 14 cottages/holiday homes for a week each in small towns throughout Southwest England and Wales -- this cottage was at the bottom of the list in the following areas: cleanliness, owner communication, bathing (clawfoot tub with low overhead clearance -- cannot stand). After 14 weekly rentals, we learned that if a cottage is not receiving regular, consistent five-star reviews, there is a reason -- often cleanliness or deferred maintenance -- due to an owner or management company resting on past laurels or location. We've have photos of: (1) Food bits and dead bugs under the bed (2) Mildew & mold in washing machine (3) Filthy dirty oven - appeared not to have been cleaned EVER - we had to clean it ourselves before using.

Owner's Response: I have had much communication with these guests both before and since their stay which has always been very friendly and I met them upon arrival and they were charming so I am surprised by this review as they made no mention of any of the above during or since they stayed in August. We state very clearly that we expect guests to advise us of any problems or issues they have with the property upon arrival so that we can have the opportunity to put it right for them so they have an enjoyable stay. The oven had been cleaned by the cleaner but has since had a professional clean and is now like new. We do expect guests to leave the property in a clean and tidy state and if they want us to arrange a cleaner to do the end of stay clean for them this can be done for a charge of £25. We do of course have the property cleaned thoroughly with the beds made up for every changeover. The fireplace is purely decorative with candles to provide ambiance and light up the hearth - we do not say anywhere on the website there is a working fire, central heating is provided and included in the rent. beautiful twyford

We enjoyed our stay at the Embessy. The cottage gives authentic flavouur of old style and life in twyford. The area is full of attractions, historical sites in the heart of Old England and children enjoyed their entire stay.

Lovely English cottage

We love this cottage and have stayed here several times. We like how old and authentic it is, but also how beautifully it's been renovated. It has a charming bedroom, with a comfortable bed (and a small second one with bunk beds), a modern kitchen with everything you might need, a wonderful living room and sitting area with TV and Wifi, and such a lovely patio and private garden in the back. The bathroom is nice with a large tub under the original timber beam (you have to watch your head when you get in the tub, but we felt this was well worth it for the charm of and feeling of this place (the cottage was built in 1450, which of course amazes Americans like us). We thoroughly recommend this lovely cottage and hope you enjoy your stay there as much as we have.
