Marie Ruhland purchased this studio in 1985
This is an ohana studio attached but separate from our home. It does not have an ocean view.
Unit is clean and modern with cable modem internet access and cable TV. 3 minute walk to Honolii Black Sand beach. This beach is the best surfing beach in Hilo and has a great beach for relaxing, swimming, reading and sunbathing. Guests are able to use the lanai and observation deck and barbecue. The rental is located on a quiet street where guests can take walks for 20 minutes.
This rental was perfect. It is easy access to the Hawiian Belt Rd and very close to Hilo. We enjoyed sitting upstairs each morning enjoying a coffee and watching the surfers. Marie was wonderful.
It was pretty cool to climb the spiral staircase, escorted by the owner's friendly dogs who otherwise seem to own that high perch, and then enjoy morning coffee while scanning the horizon for pirate ships, whales, and surfers. Well, one out of three was good enough. We watched plenty of local surfers right down below us at that black sand beach. It's a 2 minute walk to the beach itself, out the back gate and down the street behind. The guest unit behind the owner's beautiful house is nicely furnished with a comfy bed and sofa/bed, and a well-equipped kitchen. The air-conditioning worked well to enable cool sleep and its low rumbling sound muted those pesky coqui frogs that chirp and whistle all night outside, all over this island. We appreciated using the owner's laundry room that was accessible directly off the back patio where she grows orchids. The owner provides clear and complete information as a guide to the Hilo area, access to their wifi, etc. The TV controller was easy to work (not always so elsewhere!). The owner was very prompt in responding to our email questions before we arrived and graciously supplied a couple of extra things we asked for. The location a couple of miles north of Hilo's downtown was easy to find and quite handy for touring the whole east side of the Big Island. This was a great base of operations for our four busy days in the Hilo area, being very relaxing to come home to. We have also stayed at resorts and condos in other places, and much preferred the at-home atmosphere here since we don't need the extra services of a resort like swimming pools, exercise rooms, play areas for kids, etc.
We toured all of the east half of the Big island over four days, taking in Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls, volcanos, lava flows, a beach warmed by geothermal springs in the Puna area, and remnants of "old Hawaii" in the surrounding areas. We loved driving the scenic routes off the main highways, savoring narrow roads with one-way bridges, and the frequent cases of "tree tunnels" overarching the roadways, the Waipio Valley to the north, and the cattle ranch area out near Waimea to the north. The active volcano, Kilauea, is worth a whole day, but be sure to watch the fireworks at sunset from the Jaggar Museum. We couldn't reach the active lava flow at the seashore because it's a 2-3 mile walk from either end of the closed road. Moana Kea Visitor Center at 9.000 feet elevation was also great.
A great property! Comfortable clean and organized. Great location and loved the surfing beach. The deck is great and a beautiful property. The owner is really nice and takes great pride in her property and you can tell with all the nice touches. If we are able to come back we will stay there again.
We stayed at this rental for 5 days and it was an amazing stay! The house was easy to find and Marie quickly greeted us and showed us the space. She was extremely kind and very helpful with questions we had. The space itself was perfect for 2 people. There is a futon that folds out so you could technically fit 4, but 2 is best if you want some space. There is a ceiling fan, AC, comfy bed, clean bathroom, kitchen and your own personal parking spot. We also hung out on the observation deck one of the days and met their 2 cute dogs and a few of their really chill cats. View from the deck is amazing and the house itself is literally steps from Honolii. Overall it was a really great stay and I would highly recommend! Mahalo!
Marie was a fantastic host and created a very pleasant stay! The guest house was very comfortable and all of the amenities you would need and then some. Marie has a very organized binder that lets you know how to operate everything in the house and simple check in/out process. We especially enjoyed the cleanliness of the guest house, and high end shower products and linens provided. We used the guest house as a jump off point to visit local attractions including the tide pools so it is fine that the location is a couple miles out from downtown Hilo. Great stay and a great host would definitely recommend!
This rental is perfect for the adventurous couple that can appreciate the location! If the thought of walking out of the back gate with your surfboard at a fun local break and having evening cocktails or morning coffee on the deck watching the waves, then this place is perfect for you. It's got everything you need to feel at home. We will definitely be back!
