Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 bath with sleeping alcove off living room and complete kitchen.

Need a relaxing refuge to retreat to after a day of adventuring among the natural wonders of Yosemite National Park? Our warm and inviting home is located inside the park gates equidistant from the celebrated features of Yosemite: the namesake Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point, the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias and 800 miles of hiking trails. Over and over guests tell us that when they come back at the end of the day, they feel like they are coming home.

Finished in 2010, Alpine Escape is an 840 square foot (78 square meter), one-bedroom apartment. You will enjoy a fully-equipped kitchen with full-size, quality appliances, granite countertops and a full complement of cooking equipment (pots, pans, coffee maker, blender, and so on). Knotty alder cabinets in the kitchen, bath and bedroom and knotty alder doors and trim throughout give a warm feel to the home. We live upstairs in our own apartment while you have the ground floor with a completely separate entrance.

For your comfort, we have central heat (propane) and a gas fireplace to keep you warm in winter and air conditioning (Fujitsu mini-splits) to keep you cool on the rare very hot days we have.

The living/dining area has a table for four, a large sofa and a 47" flat-screen television for watching movies from our DVD collection (news junkies beware: we do not receive a broadcast signal). The bedroom features a queen bed with a built-in knotty alder closet. An alcove off the living room provides bedding for up to two additional guests on a daybed and pullout trundle with comfortable memory foam mattresses (no miserable pullout sofa beds!). The trundle is at floor level, so it is great for younger kids, but perhaps not so great for older adults! Alpine Escape is the perfect size for a couple or a family with one or two children. We have even (rarely) hosted a group of 4 adults.

Outside you have a small, covered patio by the entrance that is just enough sit under while grilling on the gas grill, reading a book or breathing in Yosemite.

We are near the end of a quiet street, the perfect starting point for an evening stroll. Some winter mornings, we've woken to the laughter of young kids happily sledding down the road in front of our house (and observant parents keeping their eyes open for the occasional vehicle). There are places nearby to go for walks with excellent birding and wildflowers, including what may be the best display of Evening Primroses in the entire park right in our front yard (in the early 1900s the Evening Primroses were a major attraction in Yosemite Valley and the subject of some of the first hand-tinted color photos ever taken, but there are now only a handful scattered around the Valley). A network of running and hiking trails surrounds the neighborhood.

But of course, you are coming to Yosemite for the soaring granite cliffs, massive sequoia trees and tremendous views. Yosemite West is located inside the park entrance, and sits near an intersection of the roads leading to the park's most famous features: Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point and Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. These popular park destinations are all within 15-18 miles (30-35 minutes) from Yosemite West in three different directions. The Badger Pass ski area is only seven miles away providing access to Yosemite's winter wonders, including XC ski and snowshoe trails, as well as lift-served skiing and snowboarding. If you're looking to eat out, the famous restaurants of Yosemite Valley are about 30 minutes away, while the Wawona Hotel, which welcomed Theodore Roosevelt on his 1903 trip to Yosemite, is about 25 minutes in the opposite direction.

We also pride ourselves on our depth of knowledge of the park and our willingness to share that knowledge. Since 1985, we have been coming to the park for the world-class rock climbing and have been living here full time since April 2003. We're hikers, climbers, backcountry skiers and wildflower enthusiasts and general naturalists. We have worked as Assistant Manager of the Yosemite Mountaineering School running the hiking program (Theresa), a park ranger (Tom), ski instructors (both). Through those experiences, and through helping our guests over the years, we have wealth of information that we are willing to share to help you make the most of your time in Yosemite whether it's a couple of days or a couple of weeks!

About Tom Lambert and Theresa Ho

After rock climbing in Yosemite in the 1980s and 1990s we came to Yosemite on three-month climbing trip in 2003 and never left. We live here, work here, play here and would love to share the park with you. We are avid hikers, climbers, skiers, wildflower enthusiasts and photographers. We have worked for the ski area, the cross-country ski center, the mountaineering school, volunteered at the visitor center (Theresa), and worked as ranger (Tom).

Why Tom Lambert and Theresa Ho chose Yosemite West

Yosemite National Park is one of the most beautiful adventure spots in the world. From the tallest waterfalls and granite cliffs in America to meadows of wildflowers and wildlife, there's no place else like it. Yosemite West, our neighborhood, is at a crossroads where in one direction on finds the incomparable Yosemite Valley, in another the sweeping vistas of Glacier Point and in the third the majestic giant sequoia trees of the Mariposa Grove. We love being so close to such amazing scenery. In the winter, we are only seven miles from downhill skiing at Badger Pass and cross-country skiing on Glacier Point Road, close enough to nip out for a short ski before work.

What makes this apartment unique

We don't think there is any rental or hotel in Yosemite that offers guests the planning assistance and personal attention that we do. Yosemite is the size of Rhode Island and ranges from 2,000 feet to over 13,000 feet in elevation. Figuring out what to do can be daunting. Unless we're off traveling ourselves, we greet most of our guests and help plan their stay in the park. Many guests, especially those here during crowded periods, tell us our guidance was integral to the success of their trip. Whether we're here or not, we also offer our guests unparalleled trip planning help. If we won't be available during your stay, we are always happy to assist by phone and email and make sure that not only will you enjoy your evenings and mornings at our house, but you will have a plan of action to make the most of your visit to this huge park.

Perfect, serene retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing stay at the Alpine Escape home! Tom and Theresa are so caring and knowledgeable. They gave us great recommendations and checked in during our stay to make sure we had everything we needed. The home was impeccably well equipped and inviting. We loved being able to get away from the hustle and bustle of the valley and come home to cook a healthy meal. Highly recommend this home for your Yosemite stay!

Beautiful Property Close to Yosemite

  • 5 of 5

We were not able to enjoy our entire stay at the property due to the wildfire, but the little time we did have was great. The property's location is perfect for exploring the Yosemite Valley, Glacier Road, and Mariposa/Wawona sections of the park. We are a family of four with two teenagers and it's a great set-up with the sleeping alcove and one separate bedroom. The owners showed genuine care for our well-being and safety in the situation and we were sad not to be able to stay. Don't hesitate to book this property. The owners and property are fantastic!

Perfect stay for a family of 4

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful condo that is well cared for! Great location! Kitchen was fully stocked. Condo has a/c but we never used it. The condo is well shaded and there is also a large fan that we put in the window one night to cool it down and that worked well. Perfect for a family of 4! Trundle bed & day bed were comfy for our 11 & 14 yr olds. (side note: our 14yr old is 5'9 and spent 5 nights on the day bed and it was perfect). Tom & Theresa were even kind enough to have the day/trundle beds all set up for our arrival.....which was very nice after a 13hr drive. Our girls enjoyed the games and puzzles that were available. Tom & Theresa were amazing hosts!!! They always promptly answered all of our questions about the park and genuinely care about their guests experience in the condo! We would stay here again for sure! Lots of deer around the neighborhood.....be careful driving.

Amazing cabin in West Yosemite

  • 5 of 5

Tom managed to accommodate us at short notice and was really great answering questions and making sure I had all necessary information before we arrived. Upon arrival Tom greeted us at the cabin and it’s better than the pictures show! Rooms are spacious and kitchen is amazing. If you like to cook like I do you will be pleasantly surprised by all kitchen utensils. There was even a bunch of spices as wel as milk, cheese and others bits left over from previous guests. Great selection of DVD’s for the kids at end of long day too. The grill outside works a treat as well. In terms of location it’s pretty great, away from hustle and bustle of the valley. However I found it took me more like 35/40mins to get to and from the valley but it’s a really nice drive and u get to las tunnel view so it’s not too bad. It’s also located nicely if u want to visit mariposa grove which was another 30-40min drive and about 45 to glacier point so from that standpoint it’s actually very centrally located. Supply wise there is a small grocery store at mariposa about 30mins or so out. Size of room was also perfect for two adults and two small children.

Perfect for many reasons

  • 5 of 5

This house has everything a vacationer could imagine. If you want to just see the sights and have your meals in the valley, then Tom and Theresa have provided coffee, coffee filters, toilet tissue, paper towels, towels, bedding...everything you could possibly need. No need to stop at a store for essentials. However, if you, like we, like to grill and cook your own meals, then this is also the place for you. The gas grill is easy to use, the kitchen is stocked with good pots and pans and every utensil you can think of.

Thanks Tom and Theresa for a stress free vacation!!!
