Need a relaxing refuge to retreat to after a day of adventuring among the natural wonders of Yosemite National Park? Our warm and inviting home is located inside the park gates equidistant from the celebrated features of Yosemite: the namesake Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point, the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias and 800 miles of hiking trails. Over and over guests tell us that when they come back at the end of the day, they feel like they are coming home.
Finished in 2010, Alpine Escape is an 840 square foot (78 square meter), one-bedroom apartment. You will enjoy a fully-equipped kitchen with full-size, quality appliances, granite countertops and a full complement of cooking equipment (pots, pans, coffee maker, blender, and so on). Knotty alder cabinets in the kitchen, bath and bedroom and knotty alder doors and trim throughout give a warm feel to the home. We live upstairs in our own apartment while you have the ground floor with a completely separate entrance.
For your comfort, we have central heat (propane) and a gas fireplace to keep you warm in winter and air conditioning (Fujitsu mini-splits) to keep you cool on the rare very hot days we have.
The living/dining area has a table for four, a large sofa and a 47" flat-screen television for watching movies from our DVD collection (news junkies beware: we do not receive a broadcast signal). The bedroom features a queen bed with a built-in knotty alder closet. An alcove off the living room provides bedding for up to two additional guests on a daybed and pullout trundle with comfortable memory foam mattresses (no miserable pullout sofa beds!). The trundle is at floor level, so it is great for younger kids, but perhaps not so great for older adults! Alpine Escape is the perfect size for a couple or a family with one or two children. We have even (rarely) hosted a group of 4 adults.
Outside you have a small, covered patio by the entrance that is just enough sit under while grilling on the gas grill, reading a book or breathing in Yosemite.
We are near the end of a quiet street, the perfect starting point for an evening stroll. Some winter mornings, we've woken to the laughter of young kids happily sledding down the road in front of our house (and observant parents keeping their eyes open for the occasional vehicle). There are places nearby to go for walks with excellent birding and wildflowers, including what may be the best display of Evening Primroses in the entire park right in our front yard (in the early 1900s the Evening Primroses were a major attraction in Yosemite Valley and the subject of some of the first hand-tinted color photos ever taken, but there are now only a handful scattered around the Valley). A network of running and hiking trails surrounds the neighborhood.
But of course, you are coming to Yosemite for the soaring granite cliffs, massive sequoia trees and tremendous views. Yosemite West is located inside the park entrance, and sits near an intersection of the roads leading to the park's most famous features: Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point and Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. These popular park destinations are all within 15-18 miles (30-35 minutes) from Yosemite West in three different directions. The Badger Pass ski area is only seven miles away providing access to Yosemite's winter wonders, including XC ski and snowshoe trails, as well as lift-served skiing and snowboarding. If you're looking to eat out, the famous restaurants of Yosemite Valley are about 30 minutes away, while the Wawona Hotel, which welcomed Theodore Roosevelt on his 1903 trip to Yosemite, is about 25 minutes in the opposite direction.
We also pride ourselves on our depth of knowledge of the park and our willingness to share that knowledge. Since 1985, we have been coming to the park for the world-class rock climbing and have been living here full time since April 2003. We're hikers, climbers, backcountry skiers and wildflower enthusiasts and general naturalists. We have worked as Assistant Manager of the Yosemite Mountaineering School running the hiking program (Theresa), a park ranger (Tom), ski instructors (both). Through those experiences, and through helping our guests over the years, we have wealth of information that we are willing to share to help you make the most of your time in Yosemite whether it's a couple of days or a couple of weeks!

Why Tom Lambert and Theresa Ho chose Yosemite West
Yosemite National Park is one of the most beautiful adventure spots in the world. From the tallest waterfalls and granite cliffs in America to meadows of wildflowers and wildlife, there's no place else like it. Yosemite West, our neighborhood, is at a crossroads where in one direction on finds the incomparable Yosemite Valley, in another the sweeping vistas of Glacier Point and in the third the majestic giant sequoia trees of the Mariposa Grove. We love being so close to such amazing scenery. In the winter, we are only seven miles from downhill skiing at Badger Pass and cross-country skiing on Glacier Point Road, close enough to nip out for a short ski before work.
What makes this Apartment unique
We don't think there is any rental or hotel in Yosemite that offers guests the planning assistance and personal attention that we do. Yosemite is the size of Rhode Island and ranges from 2,000 feet to over 13,000 feet in elevation. Figuring out what to do can be daunting. Unless we're off traveling ourselves, we greet most of our guests and help plan their stay in the park. Many guests, especially those here during crowded periods, tell us our guidance was integral to the success of their trip. Whether we're here or not, we also offer our guests unparalleled trip planning help. If we won't be available during your stay, we are always happy to assist by phone and email and make sure that not only will you enjoy your evenings and mornings at our house, but you will have a plan of action to make the most of your visit to this huge park.

Exellent, modern lodging with all necessities you can possibly need!
Me and my fiancé stayed for three nights in April. The welcoming was great, wifi worked excellent, the bed was comfortable, and so on. And all necessities you can think of :) The lodging was very clean and fresh. Also the surroundings with clear night skies, pines and running water from the nearby creak added to the great experience.
Beautiful cabin and great owners!
My girlfriend and I said for 2 nights, and it was absolutely awesome! The place is beautiful, plenty of snow, and Tom is very helpful!
PERFECT Accommodations & Location
BASICS: apartment is accurately described & pictured. We spent 5 nights & lacked nothing. Convenient to Yosemite Valley (in snowy conditions 40+ min drive), pass thru the iconic tunnel each time you traverse the scenic road to the valley. We brought food & made full use of refrigerator, stove, oven; if needed the market in the valley has ample selections, be prepared for a higher bill. Reservation instructions were easy to follow w/all the details you need for apartment access, parking, activities, shopping, restaurants, gas, roads, etc. This was a winter trip for us, but there are supplies for warmer weather excursions. THE REAL DEAL: look up Concierge in the dictionary & in the first line will be Tom & Theresa. There are hordes of books on customer service, if it’s not genuine, it’s a moot point, they possess the real deal. Cannot say enough about their service. Before booking, Tom was PROMPT in response & we were scrambling on a Sunday for a Tuesday arrival! On the day we were driving up, Tom emailed us regarding the weather & the chains required road conditions. During our stay he courteously checked on us to ensure our comfort & safety (4WD Jeep ownership does not make you invincible on icy roads), used the snow blower to dig out the drive/walkway (snowfall measured in feet) & customized activity tips. As experienced mountaineers, long-time residents of the area & on-site proprietors, their knowledge is invaluable, a plus for first time visitors & seasoned travelers. FYI: this is not a complaint, just want to point out that if live streaming & TV viewing are on your must have list, take note. The WiFi worked well, I brought my laptop & had to do a little work; was able to access email, open Excel/PowerPoint & complete a presentation. Our Verizon coverage was spotty, but sufficient throughout the area, able to connect when needed. Frankly, we found that coming "home" after a day of hiking then lighting the fireplace, cooking dinner, going over pictures, taking a hot shower, talking about highlights & planning the next day, left little room for electronic distractions. WRAP UP: I don’t know where you are from, but we spend a lot of work hours in a concrete world, the opportunity to stand among towering pines that are thickly iced with glittering snow is ethereal. This was a spontaneous trip & everything fell into place perfectly. Yosemite is a treasure; you will not regret booking Alpine Escape. Respect the majesty, be an exceptional guest!
The perfect place for us!
Alex and I loved our stay at the Alpine Espace. First of all, Tom was so useful and helpful. He helped us plan our trip well and maximize our stay in Yosemite. The location of the rental is good, it's not too far from the Yosemite Valley (30-minute drive max) and the drive was gorgeous. We got to see Tunnel View every day. Also, the place is very cozy and comfortable. We had everything to feel at home. The kitchen was well equipped so we cooked a few meals. Tom and his wife were kind enough to welcome us with a bottle of wine and we found cookie dough in the freezer. All the information necessary was in a binder and they were easy to contact at any time. Thanks again for making our stay so wonderful!
Thanks! I'm sorry we were away during your stay and didn't get to meet you guys. You'll have to come again!
Couldn't be better
Our hosts went above and beyond to ensure that we had a terrific stay, and we did!
They gave us complete privacy, but were there if we needed anything. The accommodations were more than expected. We hope to be back.
Beautiful place - perfect location
We just spend 3 nights at this fabulous place and did not want to leave. Tom was extremely helpful and gave us great hiking and scenic drive recommendations, custom-tailored for our family. He also recommended a JEEP trail outside the park that we loved. With Alpine Escape, we got a great travel agent in addition to a beautiful relaxing well-appointed place to stay. The house was super clean with beautiful wood floors, modern appliances, luxurious towels, mattress pad warmer, beautiful fireplace, games, dvds, you name it.
After a steep strenuous hike, we appreciated that there were no stairs to get into the house.
Although you can find cheaper places outside the park, being at Yosemite West was worth the cost (especially when you consider the long lines to get into the park each morning and the winding roads). When we get back to Yosemite, Alpine Escape will be our first choice for places to stay.
Inside the park gates, and centrally located between three of the most popular park destinations, Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, our rental is the perfect basecamp for exploring the park.
Access hiking and running trails right from the neighborhood. Just ask for directions on some of our favorites! Plus, Badger Pass Ski Area, and all the skiing, snowshoeing and other snow play activities are only ~7 miles away in the winter.
