Just a two minute walk from the house you'll find York Harbor's lovely crescent beach. The ocean water is clear and pristine and perfect for a swim or just to cool your feet. The beach has fine, soft sand which is perfect for building sandcastles or taking a moonlight stroll. The surf is usually gentle and body surfing and boogie boarding are popular.

There's a cliff walk which takes you along the water's edge and provides spectacular views. Magnificent homes and dramatic rocky bluffs dot the coastline.

Just across from the property there's a beautiful park that sits on a bluff overlooking the ocean. There are 3 restaurants within walking distance of the house and two inns. There are many other wonderful restaurants in York as well as in Ogunquit and Portsmouth, N.H., which are both just 15-20 minutes away. There is a binder in the house filled with brochures and menus from many of the surrounding restaurants and attractions.

York Harbor boasts a varied and unique natural beauty. The York River empties into a peacefully protected harbor and then into the wide Atlantic. Just upriver from the harbor are inlets and grassy wetlands perfect for kayaking. The York River is tidal and its swift current and accompanying eddies make for a fun ride.Walks along the river's edge provide some stunning vistas. Boat lovers can see many of the classic boats, typical of the Maine coast, that are moored along the river. You can stroll through the "Steedman Woods" by crossing over the "Wiggly Bridge", a short walk up the river and just north of Route 103. Between Steedman Woods and Sewell's Bridge you can explore Hancock Wharf. Once owned and operated by John Hancock, the barn which housed the operation has been preserved and is open to the public. Stop in next door to see exhibits of New England artists at the George Marshall Store Gallery. Just up the river is Sewell's Bridge where you can fish or stop to pick up fresh lobster, right off the boats.

The back roads and trails around York Harbor are perfect for walking, running or biking. You can enjoy live theatre at the Ogunquit Playhouse, and concerts or movies at the Portsmouth Music Hall. Charter a boat and go fishing or lobstering. Go whale watching. Go shopping at the Kittery Outlets or drive to LL Bean in Freeport. Visit York's Wild Kingdom the museums of Portland York Beach Amusement Park, Ogunquit galleries or spend an afternoon at the historic village of Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth.

About Laura Barr

I have an eye for quality, cleanliness, design and detail which is evident in our rental home.

Laura Barr purchased this house in 2009

Why Laura Barr chose Southern Coast of Maine

We've enjoyed family vacations in this area for many years. The house has been in the family since 1949! Being so close to one of the most beautiful pristine beaches we've ever encountered is truly a marvelous treasure. The Maine air is crisp and the Atlantic ocean clear. Whatever the season, there's always so much to enjoy in the area. York Harbor has been a destination, particularly in the summer, since the late 1800's. It's easy to understand why.

What makes this house unique

A unique benefit our our spacious home is being so close to the beach and yet being on a quiet side street away from the hustle and bustle. Also, being able to walk to the beach and not having to get in the car and park, is ideal. Spectacular natural beauty and restaurants, within walking distance, are wonderful, too.

Great Maine Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We are a large family that gets together for a week long summer vacation every year. It is difficult to find a house to comfortably fit us all. Orchard Cottage was a perfect fit. We had a wonderful stay. The house is beautiful and very well kept. Everyone loved the many rooms and the large well equipped kitchen. Eating dinner together at the dining room table was a huge plus. We loved the short walk to the beach and swimming in the ocean. The Cliff Walk and the walk to Wiggley Bridge were fun for all. Should the family decide on another trip to Maine we would definitely stay again.

Wow! Excellent!

  • 5 of 5

I hosted a family vacation with our children and their children whom are all under 4 years old. This home could not have been more perfect. Very spacious, immaculate and had most everything we needed. With all of the children we very much appreciated the fenced yard so all could run and have fun and the fact that this is an older home with doors between rooms we could corral them as well. With the kids in mind the beach which is about a block away was gorgeous! Very gradual incline and gentle waves, super fun! I highly recommend this home for families with small children!

Great family vacation

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for our needs. We hosted my daughter and two sons with their children and spouses and my grand daughter's Aunt,Uncle and Cousin. The house with its 8 bed rooms and 5 bath rooms fit our various family units well. York is an ideal location with more than enough to do for all ages.

A beautiful house, clean, warm, very comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

Our extended family (10 people) celebrated 2015 Christmas at Orchard Cottage. Within minutes of our arrival, we felt at home. The spotless house is both roomy and cozy. The kitchen is well laid out and had everything we needed to make big holiday meals for our crowd. The bedrooms are charming and bright. We loved staying here and would go again in a heartbeat.

The house was super clean and easy to find. Right across the from a great beach, and close to town. The house was great for our extended family of 15 - 8 adults and 7 kids. The kids loved playing in the yard, lounging on the hammock and with all of the outdoor toys supplied - croquet, horseshoes... the outdoor seating was lovely for evening cocktails and made eating lobster dinner carefree and easy cleanup. Kitchen is very well equipped and easy to maneuver around. We especially liked the photos inside the cabinets reminding you where everything belongs! Thank you!!
