Come, relax and enjoy this traditional Hawaiian Home and Orchard set in the last 80 miles of undeveloped coastline on Hawaii’s Southernmost point. Featured is our 3 bedroom, 3 full bath, 2200 sq. ft. comfortable updated farm home. Located in the lush, green and beautiful Na`alehu countryside, we are situated on 35 acres and can accommodate up to 12 guests in their own beds. Fifteen acres of productive organic orchards surround the house, with our own adjacent 20 acres of private hiking trails next door. Our property is in turn surrounded by Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, with the new South entrance Kahuku Unit just two miles from our door. The ideal spot for organic food lovers and true eco-adventurers. A sense of spaciousness and peace pervades.
ATTENTION...this location is remote and for PURE NATURE LOVERS, and does not have amenities like shopping, fine dining restaurants, movies etc. Included in your stay you have the opportunity to let go of the day-to-day drama and sincerely appreciate the magnificence of Nature that Hawaii has to offer. We are a busy and productive ORGANIC FARM and our Ka`u district produces some of the best food on the island. You gotta cook it yourself!
On our Property and with the Orchard Master’s direction, you are welcome to wander the orchards, harvest and eat off any of the abundant macadamia, avocado and citrus groves. Our docile herd of sheep and turkey's will keep the young and young at heart entertained
At `Ailani Orchards we believe that the education of our Aina (Hawaiian for land and lifeblood) will set us apart. We hope to share this with you and your loved ones.
Our 3 bedroom and 3 full bath home is lofty and spacious with an open layout. Rich hardwood floors throughout provide a warm feeling, while tile in the baths, kitchen and separate laundry room make up the compliment. The home is two-story providing many different areas in which to take a breather after a long day at the beach, hiking the Volcano, or a simple lazy morning enjoying freshly roasted coffee, grown just a few feet from your door. Our two-level wooden lanai (deck) area is approximately 1600 square feet, perfect for your morning Yoga, an evening BBQ or having your family Chef de Cuisine prepare your meal with fresh produce from our orchards as you watch the changing colors of the sunset over the ocean from our upper deck.
We offer three well-appointed bedrooms, two with private baths, each with traditional big bamboo furniture and high thread count cotton sheets and comforters to keep you cozy. Our Macadamia King Master bedroom (about 360 sq feet) offers a California King bed, an ensuite bath with shower over tub, custom extra tall tile and oak double sinks, and a view of a grand-daddy macadamia tree off the back deck. Our Banana Queen Room (about 190 sq feet) offers a comfortable Queen bed, closet and full bath with a view onto the banana patch and the Norfolk Island pines. Our Orchard View Queen Room is a spacious 200 sq ft room on the main floor with separate bath next door, shower over tub, and a lovely view out onto the orchard and our roaming herd of sheep. Finally, our large open Great Room with gorgeous tiger wood floors (about 650 sq ft) can accommodate an additional 4 guests each in their own twin-sized beds. Surrounded by windows and with almost no light pollution, this room has a great view of the blazing starry night skies, some of the best in the world for star-gazing.

We are Barney & Elizabeth, Sam & Gabe, owners of Ailani Orchards, a family owned and run organic orchard since 2001. We pride ourselves on offering truly healthy organic food including the NOW FAMOUS KA`U COFFEE!
We produce some of the best tasting and healthiest dehydrated organic macadamia nuts available on the Hawaiian Islands, and our coffee is ahhhhh...well... you'll have to taste this divine brew yourselves to see what we mean! We also invented and produce our own chocolate macadamia nut butters made with real dark and white Belgian chocolate and our own organic nuts. It is a delicacy not to be missed. We believe in an organic lifestyle as a basis for our teaching, both with kids and adults. Barney is Head Farmer and Orchard Master, and Elizabeth is an internationally bestselling author of three books on the Inkas of Peru. We are the Hawaii headquarters for the Wiraqocha Foundation for the Preservation of Indigenous Wisdom and offer programs on property.
Elizabeth Jenkins purchased this farmhouse in 2002
We began as an organic farm and then added this vacation rental house to our property to offer people a unique opportunity to participate in a real working farm and see real life in Hawaii which adds to our farm charm.
Our vacation rental here on our farm allows you to stay in the place where the FAMOUS KA`U Hawaiian Coffee and macadamia nuts are grown and processed. Eat food from the land you are walking on! Your vacation rental experience is enhanced by our organic farm surroundings and the beauty and MANA of this pristine natural area of the Big Island.
We are from Italy and we truly loved our stay at this wonderful place so convenient to see all of the Big Island Of Hawaii. We give MORE THAN 5 stars rating because you can see one million stars from the deck at night! The owners brought out their telescope and we got to see the rings of SATURN! THIS WAS AMAZING because I have never seen this before in my life. The food from the orchards was wonderful and every morning we had the best espresso from the coffee that comes from the farm. This was really surprising as we Italians are used to drinking very good coffee. This coffee was even better!
Our family group of 7 adults (3 couples and my elderly father) spent Christmas at Elizabeth and Barney's beautiful house. There were many things we loved about it... the calm and privacy, the perfect temperature and (usually) light breeze, the fabulous upper deck that was a perfect place to sip excellent coffee and watch the sun rise, the fruit and nut trees right outside the door, the fantastic spring water. The house was clean, and the bedrooms were comfortable. Our hosts were gracious and helpful but not intrusive in any way. They did their very best to accommodate our requests. Bugs were not an issue. There were some tiny ants in the kitchen, and we trapped and released a total of 3 cockroaches during our 9-night stay... a small price to pay for the security of knowing there was no poison around!
A couple of things anyone staying here should be aware of:
1. The description says the house will sleep 12, but there is only bedroom space for 6. The other beds are custom bunks in the great room, which is really meant to be a common space: it is all windows and right at the front entrance, so there is little privacy and it offers no place to store personal belongings. It would be fine for children, but was not ideal for us.
2. If you really like to cook, this accommodation presents a challenge, especially if you have a large group. Saucepans, frying pans, salad and serving bowls suitable for our group of 7 were at a premium. I really really wanted some sort of a juicer or press to take advantage of all the fresh citrus that was just lying on the ground outside the house!
3. We appreciated the ecological advantages of the solar water heater, but the water was NEVER very hot, and water pressure in the showers was very low, especially in the downstairs bathroom.
4. The remote location is a mixed blessing... you have to drive for at least 30-45 minutes to access most of the things to see and do (which are fantastic... we snorkeled, rode horses, hiked, swam). This is not an issue if you just want a place to chill in the hammock and enjoy some peace and quiet, but we craved more adventurous pursuits. We spent a lot of time in the van!
What can I say? Barny and Elizabeth were great hosts! The house is awesome and so relaxing. We stayed for 4 nights and they were very accommodating to our late arrival and early leave time. The location is so quiet and peaceful, much needed after the hustle and bustle of Oahu. Staying here actually felt like being on vacation, yet the major attractions like the green sand beach, black sand beach and volcanoes are all within easy driving distance! If we get the opportunity to go back to the Big Island, we would definitely stay here again!
We stayed for ten nights and could go all around the Big Island, visiting Volcanos, beaches and all the other beautiful places. The farm is wonderful, peaceful and very welcoming, the owners are helpful and give us all the freedom to go wherever we wanted. We hope to go back in the future!
My family, a group of 10 ranging from my young kids to seniors, stayed here for 5 days starting on XMAS eve. We were very pleased by many things, not the least of which were the owners, who greeted us the morning after all of us arrived and consistently gave us good advice on accessing the sights on that side of the Big Island. The lodging was a clean, sunny, and private residence, far back from the main road that was surrounded by fruit and nut trees. The bedrooms were spacious enough and private and the two common areas on the ground floor provided good places to congregate. And, then there are the farm animals which are constantly roaming around.
Overall, I found it a really nice spot that was very removed from the bustle of the Kona side. It gave us good access to Volcanoes and also to great little towns like Naalehu and the black sand beaches nearby. The roof deck was great to see the ocean and shoreline in the distance and at night, it was a terrific vantage point for some nighttime sky photography.
I don't think this residence is for everyone. There are bugs around that will freak out some (not me, but my wife, yes). But easygoing, nature-friendly people looking for a non-hotel option for an extended family vacation will really enjoy a site like this. It's impossible to find one place on the Big island that will give you convenient access to everything. If you want to see Volcanoes and stay in a lush tropical venue (i.e., not the Kona side) and see the black and green sand beaches, which are spectacular, and also large sea turtles and swim among them, this is a good, solid place. The W/D was a nice plus that we used quite a bit.
If there were a few things to improve on they might include more and better kitchenware, since we had a big group. While fetching fresh water by the bottle from the front of the residence was initially fun, it wasn't the main activity I wanted on my vacation. Vacation rentals are always different than what you imagine or expect, and this is no different. However, there are many more plusses than minuses.
We stayed at this house for 4 nights, splitting our Big Island vacation between here and a big chain resort up in Waikaloa Beach. This was the perfect balance! After the sterile but luxe resort with fancy pool, this homey, peaceful, quiet and rugged setting gave us a totally different flavor. The house is spacious, clean and welcoming. The owners are super friendly and helpful, but allowed us privacy at the same time. The property is perfect for families who love animals and nature... we ate fruit off the trees outside our door and bought yummy treats at the farm stand (Mac/Belgian Chocolate butter with the baby apple bananas!...yummmm!). The lambs and goats eat from your hands and the baby lambs were adorable! Turkeys gobble you awake each morning. The house is well equipped... tons of kids' movies to watch each night. We took day trips to the black beach, the volcanos and the Ho'okena beach (you can rent sea kayaks and snorkel equipment there). All great. The sound of the wind in the trees surrounding the property is mesmerizing! And the view of the ocean from the 2nd story deck is beautiful! We didn't see any bugs at all by the way, except for a few tiny ants and daddy longlegs. But we're not too worried about stuff like that... Overall, a very, very relaxing perfect stay! Mahalo!!
The house is very large and accommodating for up to 12 people. I took a small student group here and it was perfect for all of us to live and work in and go on daily trips to either the Hilo or Kona side of the Island. The drives (usually about 1.5 hours) were sometimes a little wearing on the children, but we all loved how friendly the owners were and enjoyed the tour of the orchard. The house is gorgeous and the outdoor porch makes you appreciate the land and the beauty of the Island. Whether never seems to hot or cold in this part of the Island.
