A few short weeks ago our coffee was voted BEST COFFEE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII by the Hawaii Coffee Growers Association! This coffee is grown above the Black Sand Beach by Berta and Jose Miranda and we have roasted and sold it for the last 16 years!
Come, relax and enjoy this coffee in this traditional Hawaiian Home and Orchard set in the last 80 miles of undeveloped coastline on Hawaii’s Southernmost point. Featured is our 3 bedroom, 3 full bath, 2200 sq. ft. comfortable updated farm home. Located in the lush, green and beautiful Na`alehu countryside, we are situated on 35 acres and can accommodate up to 12 guests in their own beds. Fifteen acres of productive organic orchards surround the house, with our own adjacent 20 acres of private hiking trails next door. Our property is in turn surrounded by Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, with the new South entrance Kahuku Unit just two miles from our door. The ideal spot for organic food lovers and true eco-adventurers. A sense of spaciousness and peace pervades.
ATTENTION...this location is remote and for PURE NATURE LOVERS, and does not have amenities like shopping, fine dining restaurants, movies etc. Included in your stay you have the opportunity to let go of the day-to-day drama and sincerely appreciate the magnificence of Nature that Hawaii has to offer. We are a busy and productive ORGANIC FARM and our Ka`u district produces some of the best food on the island. You gotta cook it yourself!
On our Property and with the Orchard Master’s direction, you are welcome to wander the orchards, harvest and eat off any of the abundant macadamia, avocado and citrus groves. Our docile herd of sheep and turkey's will keep the young and young at heart entertained
At `Ailani Orchards we believe that the education of our Aina (Hawaiian for land and lifeblood) will set us apart. We hope to share this with you and your loved ones.
Our 3 bedroom and 3 full bath home is lofty and spacious with an open layout. Rich hardwood floors throughout provide a warm feeling, while tile in the baths, kitchen and separate laundry room make up the compliment. The home is two-story providing many different areas in which to take a breather after a long day at the beach, hiking the Volcano, or a simple lazy morning enjoying freshly roasted coffee, grown just a few feet from your door. Our two-level wooden lanai (deck) area is approximately 1600 square feet, perfect for your morning Yoga, an evening BBQ or having your family Chef de Cuisine prepare your meal with fresh produce from our orchards as you watch the changing colors of the sunset over the ocean from our upper deck.
We offer three well-appointed bedrooms, two with private baths, each with traditional big bamboo furniture and high thread count cotton sheets and comforters to keep you cozy. Our Macadamia King Master bedroom (about 360 sq feet) offers a California King bed, an ensuite bath with shower over tub, custom extra tall tile and oak double sinks, and a view of a grand-daddy macadamia tree off the back deck. Our Banana Queen Room (about 190 sq feet) offers a comfortable Queen bed, closet and full bath with a view onto the banana patch and the Norfolk Island pines. Our Orchard View Queen Room is a spacious 200 sq ft room on the main floor with separate bath next door, shower over tub, and a lovely view out onto the orchard and our roaming herd of sheep. Finally, our large open Great Room with gorgeous tiger wood floors (about 650 sq ft) can accommodate an additional 4 guests each in their own twin-sized beds. Surrounded by windows and with almost no light pollution, this room has a great view of the blazing starry night skies, some of the best in the world for star-gazing.
Our caretakers and staff are very knowledgeable about the island and are always available to help plan out your next adventure. We are here to share our Hawaii state of mind and make sure you fully enjoy your stay.
We are located near the small town of Na`alehu (pronounced nah-ah-lay-hoo) directly 65 miles from Kailua-Kona and 65 miles from Hilo airports. Visit our famous and remote Black Sand Beaches of Punalu`u and Honomalino, or swim at the rare Greensand Beach at Mahana Bay formed from olivine crystals. For a thrill JUMP off the 40-foot cliff at South Point into some of clearest waters in the world. Enjoy Polehimu, a rare anchialine pool housing an endemic shrimp species. Explore the second longest lava tube in the world at Kula Kai Caverns just 10 minutes from our door—24 miles and still mapping! Hawaii Volcanoes National Park New South entrance is a wonderland for birdwatchers boasting an enormous pit crater, home to many rare species. Our area holds wonders that are many of the Islands best kept secrets. Are you ready?
We strive to show you the real Hawaii and truly believe we can. Let us help you create lasting memories you can take home with you. Experience a lifetime of all the adventure and beauty that this island has to offer.

About Elizabeth Jenkins
We are Barney & Elizabeth, Sam & Gabe, owners of Ailani Orchards, a family owned and run organic orchard since 2001. We pride ourselves on offering truly healthy organic food including the NOW FAMOUS KA`U COFFEE! We produce some of the best tasting and healthiest dehydrated organic macadamia nuts available on the Hawaiian Islands, and our coffee is ahhhhh...well... you'll have to taste this divine brew yourselves to see what we mean! We also invented and produce our own chocolate macadamia nut butters made with real dark and white Belgian chocolate and our own organic nuts. It is a delicacy not to be missed. We believe in an organic lifestyle as a basis for our teaching, both with kids and adults. Barney is Head Farmer and Orchard Master, and Elizabeth is an internationally bestselling author of three books on the Inkas of Peru. We are the Hawaii headquarters for the Wiraqocha Foundation for the Preservation of Indigenous Wisdom and offer programs on property.

Very spacious and comfortable property in a peaceful, private setting
We were a group of 7 (4 adults and 3 kids including a toddler) and this place worked out beautifully for us. It was spacious and delightfully set up. We cooked most of our meals during our week long stay and the utensils were sufficient. Our toddler enjoyed feeding orange peel to the sheep and we enjoyed the fruit. Elizabeth, Barney and their kids surprised us with a visit from Santa on Christmas morning!
We had a couple of 5 gallon cans for water, which we refilled every couple of days or so with delicious spring water. The kids had plenty of room to play outdoors and some good movies to chill out with indoors.
The black sand beach with its turtles was about 20 mins away and a great place to hang out with young children. We did day trips to the volcanic national park and Hilo. The long drives had scenic ocean views and lava rocks surrounding us and were enjoyable. We did one trip to the green sand beach, but I think the hike is a bit much with young children.
The geckos freaked the adults out. But in their defense, they kept out of our way mostly and might have eaten up the other insects. We did our best to put food away and sweep up crumbs. So that helped with the other bugs too.
We very much enjoyed our vacation here. And would gladly do it again, if we get the chance.
As always, perfect
This is our 3rd time staying here. As always, it is homey, welcoming and exactly what we want for our vacation
Wonderful! Our family of 9 adults celebrated an early Christmas, family reunion, and sightseeing holiday with an 8 night stay on this peaceful, lovely farm. Our hosts were kind, helpful, accommodating and very friendly. We all enjoyed the farm atmosphere and the daily visits of their family dog, Winston. Would definitely recommend to others and would stay there again. Great base location for all the things we wanted to do. Thank you Elizabeth and Barney for sharing your slice of paradise!
Aloha Mary and thanks for your lovely comments. It was a real pleasure to host your group and always wonderful to witness family having a great time together relaxing and enjoying the beauty of life. Mahalo for helping to support our organic family farm by staying with us. You were excellent guests and thank you for taking such good care of our house. Please come back anytime...Winston is waiting!
Our family group of 7 adults (3 couples and my elderly father) spent Christmas at Elizabeth and Barney's beautiful house. There were many things we loved about it... the calm and privacy, the perfect temperature and (usually) light breeze, the fabulous upper deck that was a perfect place to sip excellent coffee and watch the sun rise, the fruit and nut trees right outside the door, the fantastic spring water. The house was clean, and the bedrooms were comfortable. Our hosts were gracious and helpful but not intrusive in any way. They did their very best to accommodate our requests. Bugs were not an issue. There were some tiny ants in the kitchen, and we trapped and released a total of 3 cockroaches during our 9-night stay... a small price to pay for the security of knowing there was no poison around!
A couple of things anyone staying here should be aware of:
1. The description says the house will sleep 12, but there is only bedroom space for 6. The other beds are custom bunks in the great room, which is really meant to be a common space: it is all windows and right at the front entrance, so there is little privacy and it offers no place to store personal belongings. It would be fine for children, but was not ideal for us.
2. If you really like to cook, this accommodation presents a challenge, especially if you have a large group. Saucepans, frying pans, salad and serving bowls suitable for our group of 7 were at a premium. I really really wanted some sort of a juicer or press to take advantage of all the fresh citrus that was just lying on the ground outside the house!
3. We appreciated the ecological advantages of the solar water heater, but the water was NEVER very hot, and water pressure in the showers was very low, especially in the downstairs bathroom.
4. The remote location is a mixed blessing... you have to drive for at least 30-45 minutes to access most of the things to see and do (which are fantastic... we snorkeled, rode horses, hiked, swam). This is not an issue if you just want a place to chill in the hammock and enjoy some peace and quiet, but we craved more adventurous pursuits. We spent a lot of time in the van!
Aloha Rebecca and thank you so much for choosing to stay with us, we enjoyed having you and your Dad is just a lovely person. He and I had a wonderful visit at our Fruit Stand on the day he stayed home. We appreciate your comments and I would like to address each one to help future visitors. Barney and I would have loved the opportunity to address each of these issues had we known about them. While we are very busy with our farm, we always have time to help our guests and most of these issues are an easy fix.
1. The house does sleep 12 in beds as we have two rollaways that we can add in. Two of the THREE bedrooms are large enough to add the rollaways. We have actually had groups of 14 stay here comfortably. The Great Room as stated in the description is surrounded by windows and is at the front of the house. There is a heavy door between this room and the main house for sound privacy but not visual privacy. We have 5.3 acres for that and there is not another house in sight. There is ample storage for each of the four beds below in large storage cupboards that slide open for easy access. Rebecca I am sorry that, as you mentioned in your email to me, you somehow didn't see the storage cupboards.
2.We have many guests with very diverse needs so we include a moderate amount of kitchen equipment and tell our guests to PLEASE ASK if there is anything special that you want, need, or are not finding in the kitchen. We have three houses on the property and four kitchens--so items DO tend to get moved around. If you are missing something that you wish for we can more than likely accommodate. We have several juicers that we use in our commercial kitchen for our fruit stand and could easily have supplied one, had we known.
3. The hot water is adjustable and can be turned up or down. Rebecca we could have easily adjusted the hot water temperature to suit, as we did for the previous group with small children who asked for the temperature to be turned down.
4. Ahhh....our remote location is something we are very happy we cannot change. Most of our guests love the advantage of being equidistant between the two largest cities on the Island and as for adventure travel, Ka`u is reknown for being the home of the ECO-tourist. The BIG ISLAND really is BIG and if you want to see it ALL? Well yes...you will spend time in your car.
Communication between owner and guests is key to a good experience and your review has alerted me to make a bigger effort!
What can I say? Barny and Elizabeth were great hosts! The house is awesome and so relaxing. We stayed for 4 nights and they were very accommodating to our late arrival and early leave time. The location is so quiet and peaceful, much needed after the hustle and bustle of Oahu. Staying here actually felt like being on vacation, yet the major attractions like the green sand beach, black sand beach and volcanoes are all within easy driving distance! If we get the opportunity to go back to the Big Island, we would definitely stay here again!
You were great guests and we really enjoyed having you!
Come back ANYTIME!!!
We stayed for ten nights and could go all around the Big Island, visiting Volcanos, beaches and all the other beautiful places. The farm is wonderful, peaceful and very welcoming, the owners are helpful and give us all the freedom to go wherever we wanted. We hope to go back in the future!
