About Kent Filsinger

I have been coming up to Sugar Springs since my parents purchased the property in 1976. I road through the lake in a 4 wheel jeep before it was filled with water. I used to own a remodeling business and now my hobby is to continually improve the property for my family and our guests.

Kent Filsinger purchased this cottage in 1976

Why Kent Filsinger chose Northern Michigan

I have spent 30 years improving the cottage to make your stay relaxing and memorable. Has all the amenities of a house but has the feel of a cottage with lots of natural wood and fishing and boating decor.

What makes this cottage unique

Almost every room has a view of the water. The gardens have been a long term on going love affair. Sitting on the garden swing or hammock totally relaxes me. Seeing the sunrise from the master bedroom always puts me in the right state of mind to start the day.

Great Family & Fishing location

  • 5 of 5

This is our 4th summer at "The Barn" on beautiful Lake Lancer in the Sugar Springs community. Every year different members of our family have visited, some for a few days and they all look forward to our 2017 return which is already booked. Everyone enjoys trips to local Amish farms, county fairs, the Tanger Outlet Mall, antique shopping, Lake Huron beaches and of course Sugar Shack ice cream.

Our grandkids like making sand castles and swimming in the nice sandy beach area. We enjoy all the comforts of home this property has to offer, especially the central air conditioning for the very hot weather we had during our stay. This property is always refreshingly super clean when we arrive and Mr. Filsinger has taken great strides in making us feel at home.

Even with the hot weather this summer, we enjoyed 2 huge fish fries with the fish we caught right off the docks. We caught a lot of jumbo bluegills, redear sunfish and a few small bass & perch. The fish are always super clean & healthy due to the excellent water quality & careful management by the owners association. It helps that there are no septic fields, which is not the case on most other lakes.

We have stayed at many other cottages over the years and this one is the all-around best.

BEAUTIFUL AND FUN IN EVERY SEASON

  • 5 of 5

This was our third visit to The Barn. We've gone in spring and fall and loved it and winter was full of different fun and activities. Our sons and grandchildren spent a few days ice fishing and caught many large Pike and Bass. The weather was sunny and nice for our week with a few lovely snow showers. One of the things we enjoy immensely is all the wild life we see there. On this visit we saw foxes crossing the frozen lake a few times a day. And one afternoon while removing a fish from a line two Eagles circled just 15 to 20 feet above our heads hoping to get an easy meal. And one of the funnier moments that occurred...I was watching the lake and drinking coffee when I watched a jeep drive across the lake. About 25 feet behind the jeep trotted a large dog and about 25 feet behind the dog trotted a fat sheep. I'm sure there's a good story here. There are so many indoor and outdoor activities at the house that we never have a bored moment. And the house itself is lovely and comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked with pans, utensils and all kinds of cooking equipment. This has become one of our favorite vacation spots and we already look forward to returning.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the very nice review of your stay. I too have seen many different wildlife over the years but I have never seen a eagle that close. I think I would have given him the fish. May you and your family continue to make many great memories at the "Barn".

Our stay at the barn this summer was fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

The description of the property was accurate....clean and well-maintained. There was plenty of room for our family and the game room was a big hit. We were able to fish off the dock for largemouth bass....golf at a great course less than a half hour away and relax by the fire pit. We hope to make a return visit next summer and would highly recommend this property.

Excellent cottage!! Great for kids of all ages.

  • 5 of 5

Excellent cottage. Had almost everything you needed so you didn't have to pack the entire house. Lake front was perfect for little kids playing in the sand and water. Bonfires were awesome!! We look for places every year and this was by far the best. Upstairs bedrooms were cool and quiet and you heard minimal noise from downstairs. Great location for jogging and biking.

The only downfall.....we wanted to rent a boat for the week and everyone was booked when we called the day we arrived. (Book in advance!!)

Owner's Response: Thank you for the vey nice review. We try to make your packing as light as possible. This year we purchased a infant high chair and a air pump to blow up water toys. We listen to our guests and we have had many requests for boat rentals so we are planning on having a pontoon boat available for rental starting next year. Kent

A beautiful location for a family vacation!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and 2 boys (ages 2.5 & 4.5), along with my parents, had an awesome time at the barn! It is located on a quiet lake and has a great amount of privacy. Our boys loved playing in the yard and in the sand everyday...the water was perfect for them (both temperature and depth). They also went fishing right off the dock and could see all the fish in the water. You cannot beat the view of the lake; it is breathtaking!

The house is nice. It has a great master bedroom with an amazing view of the sunrise over the lake. It seemed pretty clean and we'll maintained. Honestly, we spend so much more time outside than inside because of the view and the perfect weather!

Kent was great to talk to and was very knowledgeable of the area. Thank you again for sharing your lake house with us. We made some great family memories and we certainly hope to return again next summer!!!
