About the property

4 bedrooms, plus guest cottage, 4 full baths. Compound sleeps up to 11

Step from your car and take a breath of cool mountain air. Hard to believe you’re 28 miles from Charlottesville, eighty-nine miles from Washington. The edge of the wild, this land borders Shenandoah National Forest, the most populous black bear country on the East Coast, with stunning views of the Blue Ridge mountains and the tiny, picturesque community of Graves Mill in the valley below. If you prefer hiking mountain trails, fishing a trout stream or sipping a drink on the wide two-story porch, this is the spot. Wintering in? Let it snow. The whole-house generator automatically keeps things cozy in the event of power outage. Add a steam sauna, two-person Jacuzzi with a view, Rumford fireplace in the Great Room and winter becomes a dreamer's paradise. Springtime brings Mountain Laurel and eagles. Summer offers cool relief from the flatlands. Then comes Autumn, a season you have to truly see to believe.

Great House

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 nights here over Spring break. Loved the house! It is a bit remote and a bit of a steep driveway but nothing that can't be handled.

Peaceful location

  • 4 of 5

A very well appointed home. We had everything we could possibly need for our "sibling and their spouses" yearly trip together. There were 8 adults. Beautiful home.

Elegant, tastefully appointed mountain get-away in a beautiful, restful setting

  • 5 of 5

The first word out of everyone's mouth on opening the front door and seeing the interior of Etlan was "Wow!" -- and the "wow!" continued as we went from room to room, and then from the main house to the guest house at the rear of the property and back again. From the cathedral ceiling, stretching three floors up, to the bedrooms, the kitchen, and even the bathrooms --- everything was comfortably and beautifully furnished; even the art work on the walls was attractive. And the layout was ideal for our family too: The third floor, with its master bedroom, adjoining children's room (complete with a trundle bed) and game room, was perfect for our son, his wife, and their three children, ages 4 through 12. The second floor bedrooms were ideal four our daughters and their husbands, while the guesthouse/cottage was perfect for me and my wife, a "get-away" all its own in this spacious get-away. The setting was likewise ideal: Serene and undisturbed, altogether quiet, peaceful, and restful... not a sound to be heard except the sound of birds and crickets. And the surrounding area was a laid-back playground for all of us as well: On the advice of John, the owner, we drove to Yoder's Country Store, where the grandkids enjoyed a wonderful petting zoo and massive scoops of delicious ice cream. From there we drove to a national forest trail along the Rapidan River where we hiked for a couple of miles and then swam, splashed, explored, and laughed for several hours in a deliciously cold swimming hole; we had the whole river and surrounding forest to ourselves (except for the massive snake that was sunning itself on a rock in the middle of the river; we didn't disturb him and he didn't disturb us). And the next day, after a wonderfully long and leisurely breakfast conversation around the massive dining room table, we drove to Culpeper for a day of canoeing, paddle-boating, and more ice cream. All in all, we had a great stay at Etlan; it was the perfect place for this first-ever family vacation with our children, their spouses, and our grandchildren. I can't say enough good things about it or its owner, whose replies to all of our correspondence was timely, thoughtful, and much appreciated.

A lovely mountain home!

  • 4 of 5

Our extended family of 10 spent four nights at the property and had a great time. The house is lovely - lots of nice furnishings, and the kitchen was roomy enough for "multiple cooks". We were close to hiking, vineyards, and some shopping in Culpeper. The only downside is that the driveways are steep and deeply rutted in places. We all drove SUVs and negotiated them okay, but it may be more difficult in a sedan.

Owner's Response: Nancy, I'm glad you had an enjoyable time staying at our home and apologize for the ruts on the driveway. Heavy thunderstorms just prior to your stay caused our driveway to become rutted in several areas when the rainwater rushed down the mountain slope. Contractors are at the house today to completely re-gravel all driveways on the property making them, once again, easy to traverse. Thanks for being such a good guest. John
