Overview

About the property

4 bedrooms, plus guest cottage, 4 full baths. Compound sleeps up to 11

Step from your car and take a breath of cool mountain air. Hard to believe you’re 28 miles from Charlottesville, eighty-nine miles from Washington. The edge of the wild, this land borders Shenandoah National Forest, the most populous black bear country on the East Coast, with stunning views of the Blue Ridge mountains and the tiny, picturesque community of Graves Mill in the valley below. If you prefer hiking mountain trails, fishing a trout stream or sipping a drink on the wide two-story porch, this is the spot. Wintering in? Let it snow. The whole-house generator automatically keeps things cozy in the event of power outage. Add a steam sauna, two-person Jacuzzi with a view, Rumford fireplace in the Great Room and winter becomes a dreamer's paradise. Springtime brings Mountain Laurel and eagles. Summer offers cool relief from the flatlands. Then comes Autumn, a season you have to truly see to believe.

Great House

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 nights here over Spring break. Loved the house! It is a bit remote and a bit of a steep driveway but nothing that can't be handled.

Magical views, stunning escape!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I needed a place that would house not only our immediate family but also my aunt and uncle for my brother's graduation. We rented this property and could not be more pleased. While initially a little tricky to find as night fell, it is conveniently located not too far off of US-29, which made our commute from DC pretty easy. The house itself is absolutely lovely and perfect for a family gathering-- I just wish we had more time! There was plenty of space for us to have our own rooms, each with their own, fun charm. My brother and I chose the rooms on the third floor, which include a library with an incredible selection (again, time!). Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us!

Wedding

  • 2 of 5

Flying in from the West Coast and arriving in the late evening made the drive difficult. As we got to the place the house was dark and the road to the house had hairpin turns and was extremely steep especially in a heavy rain. When we got in the house it had a must smell from the fireplace. A few recommendations-First get reflectors down the driveway so they can guide your way to the house. Next get some solar lights so that the house is not completely dark when you come into the property at night and finally air the house out the day before guests arrive. The house and property is beautiful.

Owner's Response: We were told the first guest to arrive lived in Virginia (their brother) and would be at the house at least two hours before sunset. I recommended that upon arrival he turn on all exterior floodlights to illuminate an apron of light around the house. Apparently he did not arrive until after dark. The driveway is steep but easy to navigate. For future guests I will see that all exterior floodlights are left on. The wood fireplace is often used during the winter and the Mennonite ladies, who do all our cleaning, air the house completely prior to the arrival of each new guest. I'm glad this guest found the house and property to be beautiful and hope they enjoyed their visit to Virginia.

3rd stay

  • 5 of 5

This is our third stay at this great family retreat. As with our other stays, we visited Graves Mill with another family, enjoyed the Rapidan Nature area and Early Moutnain Vineyards. Great home, well appointed. Thanks John.

Beautiful scenery that makes you want to stay in and enjoy the view

  • 5 of 5

Eight of us (4 couples) spend an annual wine weekend at this house. Ample space, gourmet kitchen, and beautiful fireplace--we love them all. We spent much of our time touring the local area, but we liked the house (and cottage) so much that we wanted to return from our ventures early on both days so that we could enjoy ourselves in the house. Perfect for entertaining. Many thanks to John for helping us find the place the day of travel!!
