We, your hosts, are a married couple; Margarita is a business owner, Bob is a physician. Both of us are semi-retired. Our children are grown and have moved out and our place is underutilized. We'd like to offer it to you. Our home has two separate parts. There's the 1320 square foot main house (available for you) and our lovely cottage in the back. At times we block off rentals in the front house so we can use it ourselves, especially during times when we can have family gatherings or have friends or relatives visit. We never rent out the cottage.
You are most welcome to stay in our home. Usually we have a 1 week minimum. The 1320 square ft main home has two bedrooms and one bath. There is plenty of privacy. The cottage/studio is accessed by a different entrance than the entrance you would use and we even have two different outdoor grills.
Our house is meticulously maintained, clean, airy, and fully equipped. It is located in what is generally acknowledged as one of the most desirable areas of Berkeley, close to wonderful restaurants, shops, and walking streets.
Our place is perfect for visiting scholars, scientists, business or creative people. for tourists who prefer the peace and quiet of this lovely East Bay city. Many of our guests have been people with children and grandchildren or other relatives or friends in the area. There is easy and fast access to downtown San Francisco via public transportation; bus and BART stations are in easy walking distance from our house.
Husband: physician. Wife: businesswoman. We have 5 grown children and 3 grandchildren. Yes, cute! We have been in the area for many years and want It would be fun to tell you all about our town and neighborhood. We know you'll enjoy the area and our home.
Bob Dolgoff and Margarita Nicol purchased this house in 2005
We didn't buy it as a vacation rental. It is our home. You will have full use of the appliances, dishes, etc. and you can even use the staples and spices you find in the pantry and the refrigerator.
Great location. Walk to UC Berkeley. Solano Avenue with its shops and restaurants is just 3 blocks away. Express bus to San Francisco is one block away. You can walk to the North Berkeley BART station. If you don't know about the climate in our area let us tell you -- it seldom gets very hot in the summer (almost no one has air conditioning) or too cold in the winter (no frost or snow). Winters can be rainy and cool, it almost never rains all summer long but it can be foggy and cool. Our usual summer weather may features fog or clouds in the morning clearing by Noon, then bright sunshine all afternoon, and then cooling in the evening. In the summer we can have spells when it is overcast for few days at a time. September and October are frequently our hottest months. In the winter it can by drizzly for days at at time or warm and sunny for days at a time or bright sunny and warm for days at a time.
The neighborhood is fabulous. Tree-lined streets, homes with beautiful landscaping, lots of flowers even in the winter. Shopping streets a few blocks away are lined with boutiques, bakeries, restaurants of all kinds, specialty food stores, bookstores, cafes, etc. You'll have fun just walking around.
My husband and I stayed in California for business and spend 3 nights in Berkeley to visit San Francisco. Bob was watering the plants in the frontyard when we arrived and kindly showed us the property. We think this is the best rental we ever had through HomeAway!
Seperate dining, kitchen, breakfastarea, two good queenbedrooms, etc. The street is quiet and we slept good. All basic groceries are provided, including fresh bread and some fruits. You can read great books and the house is decorated with nice personal pictures.
We walked to Solona Avenue for diner at the by Bob recommended Indian Restaurant; was a great meal. Next day we parked the car at the station and travelled with BART to SF. At the Ferry Building is a nice farmersmarket with good lunchoptions on Saturday untill 14.00. From there the ferry took us to Sausalito; great views of the entire Bay Area! Back was a long queue, so we choose the Busconnection across the Golden Gate Bridge, all the way through the city, you can hop off whenever you want!
On Sunday I visited Golden Gate Park and The Young Museum, great day again. And my husband stayed at home to read and work, Wifi is spotless, such as everything in the house.
Thank you Bob and Margerita for renting your home to us, and for sending the forgotten shoes ;)
Great location, perfect sized house for a small family, well-appointed kitchen, wonderful natural light, cute back patio, best night's sleep I've had in ages. The hosts were wonderful, leaving fresh fruit and other items as if we were staying at a bed & breakfast. Could go on and on, but you get the idea. We hope to be back. Soon.
The home is lovely, clean, spacious, and in a nice neighborhood of Berkeley. I rented the home for my family who was out of town visiting for my graduation. Bob was great to work with. I highly recommend this home to anyone visiting.
Our stay in this home was terrific and was perfect for our family of three (2 adults and one 17 year old). It is wonderfully situated, beautifully kept and very comfortable. It was a great home base for sightseeing in SF and for visiting our family in the Sonoma area. Restaurants, shops and the BART station are all close-by and the neighborhood is quiet. We would stay here again without hesitation! We thank our hosts for sharing their home with us and for the warm welcome and hospitality that we received.
I feel a bit like the restaurant reviewer who is loathe to celebrate the charms of a perfect small restaurant : suppose it gets so popular, so crowded, there'll be no more room for him? Bob and Margarita's house is a marvel: I visit the Bay Area often, sometimes to teach or lecture, sometimes to visit my son--I've tried other rentals, hotels. But this is really a house in which people live, not a pit stop for transients. And such a house ! Immaculate, beautifully proportioned rooms, full of light -- outside, lemon trees and roses. For someone who doesn't drive (I don't) a perfect location: Hopkins is nearby, with its legendary fish market and beautiful produce; Solano is an easy walk in another direction, the Gourmet Ghetto only slightly longer . No spectacular views, but the calm solace of a quiet , tree lined street. Given a choice, I'd never stay elsewhere.
We stayed in this lovely home over the Memorial day weekend, as we were visiting my son who was living in the Oakland area. I have rented homes through VRBO before, but this home was the most beautiful place we have rented yet! It had all the amenities, a wonderful back porch for sitting and talking. We had a really great stay and the owners were fantastic!! This was so much more comfortable than getting a hotel in San Francisco. It's a lovely home, in a lovely neighborhood, with top notch decor and furnishings. We have a great stay!!
Beaches Are an Hour's Drive Away, the High Sierra Mountains, Yosemite, and Lake Tahoe Are 3 1/2 Hours Drive Away, Muir Woods (Redwoods, the World's Tallest Trees) Are an Hour Away. San Francisco is 25' away by car except during rush hour when it is 1 hour away! Take BART (our rapid transit rail system). You can walk to the BART station in 20 - 25 minutes or you can take the bus to the city; the bus stop is a block away.
