The South, like the direction of the soul, destination for a voyage of discovery both outside and within ourselves. The South of the warm Sicilian nights, of the patchwork of dry walls, of the bright Baroque figures and shapes that have been engraved by the sun. About LUCA GIANNINI

I am an artist and interior designer with passion for giving new life to ancient places marked by beauty and silence

Why LUCA GIANNINI chose Ragusa

As soon as I discover this house I was struck by the breathtaking view you could surprisingly admire just entering…Use of reclaimed design and contemporary art was combined with local elements and original features to give an alchemic balance, just like the house itself, which is magically suspended over the town

What makes this house unique

Ecological materials, renewable energy, local handicraft and contemporary arts add a unique touch to the house, which is an authentic getaway where to relax and discover the beauty of South-Eastern Sicily

Guestbook comments from the manager

I can not say enough good things about anime a Sud and its surroundings. My husband and I stayed here a week in May and we enjoyed every minute... Each day we made a day trip to a different city (Noto, Ragusa, Scili Saracusa, and beaches) and the area has so much to offer. Modica itself is a nice place for dinner each night or if you feel like cooking, the apartment is very well equipped, The apartment is charming , elegant and most importantly very very clean. Our stay exceeded our expectations in everyway. This is a terrific value for a couple or small family (or two couples), I can't say enough good things about the area and the accomadations, and highly recommend it

This is a very beautiful house in an extraordinary city

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in Sicily over the New Year and the view of fireworks over the hillside from the balconies will stay with us for a very long time. The house is great, beautifully decorated and (so long as you can deal with lots of stairs) the location in Modica Alta is outstanding. The hosting from Aurora was faultless and we had everything we needed for a memorable holiday.

Un nido sopra Modica

  • 5 of 5

Clean, atmospheric Modica apt with stunning view

  • 4 of 5

This apartment is perfect for travelers who are looking for a charming and clean two bedroom residence on an atmospheric street in Modica Alta. The views from the balconies are stunning, looking out over the streets and churches below. The apartment is on two levels with one bedroom and bathroom upstairs so stairs must not be a problem for you. The charming streets around the apartment are paved with ancient stones so rolling your suitcases there is a bit of a challange as parking spots are on the street 300 yards away. It is well worth it to stay in this wonderful place and immerse yourself in the Modica Alta experience of daily living, complete with Modica chocolate, church exploring and wonderful dinners out in the old town. Amalia, the manager, will meet you at arrival and help you get set up in the aprtment with a very thorough orientation. She is very helpful and responsive and we loved working with her as we did with Luca, the owner. Modica Alta is located so that you can take day trips to Ortygia, the Villa Romana and Morgantina and Cava d'Iispica which are all beautiful destinations. Parking is on city streets anywhere you can find it. The only glitch that we had was that the Wifi was not working all the time in the apartment, which Amalia and Luca assisted us with promptly. I highly recommend this property. Its location in Modica Alta is very desirable and the people of the town will make your stay memorable. I hope to come back someday to enjoy more of Sicily and Modica Alta!

Warm, classy, charm & character

  • 5 of 5

We have rented flats and homes in Italy for decades but Anima a Sud was by far the best yet. Luca is a warm & gracious host, and Amalia was incredibly helpful in getting us settled and well-oriented to the area. She even took us shopping for groceries upon our arrival!

Anima a Sud is inspired with Luca's fresh & innovative art that he has crafted (beautiful!!), and with his interesting architectural features.

The views are wonderful, the beds are cozy, the bathrooms and kitchen are well-equipped, and the balcony & terrace are perfect for lounging, eating, and toasting wine to the surrounding beauty.

The strolls through town enable you to capture the essence of this beautiful town, get to all the best restaurants - far too many for you to be able to get to in only one stay! - and meet the locals along the way.

You could stay weeks and never really have to leave Modica...and coudl spend days just settled into Anima a Sud, and appreciate the views and comfort - without leaving home.

We will return again and again - to soak up the charm & beauty of Modica, and to be comforted & inspired again by Anima a Sud.

Grazie Tanto, Caro Luca!

Lovely Hideaway with charming views

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at AnimeaSud, the people were great to work with and the property was very clean and look just like the pictures. It is set in the middle of the town. You need to drive or walk up the mountain or go down the mountain for dinning, shopps etc. You need to bring walking shoes as there are alot of steps, narrow streets and hills. We had some very pretty sunny days and some not so pretty. When the fog rolls in you are in a giant cloud. It was so different from home that now that we have returned it's like we were back in time. Luca the owner was a joy to work with as well as our greeter Ameila. All in all we have a very nice time. We shared the house with another couple and it work out great with bathrooms on each floor. The beds were great, which is a big plus when traveling outside of the US. You must be able to get around on your two feet. We had a large car being that we were 4 adults with 6 bags. Our car could not get down alot of the narrow streets, parking is also an issue so when you get a space you don't want to lose it. So keep that in mind.

Fantastic in every way!!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 2 weeks in August and totally loved it. As the others say, it's a gorgeous, beautifully renovated old stone house full of the owners wonderful art - and the most amazing views you can imagine. The house is very comfortable and ideal for a couple, two couples or parents and kids. So many wonderful places to visit nearby, but we were especially happy staying in Modica - good restaurants, shopping, atmosphere etc. We cooked at home every night, which was great. It's an excellent value and very well run - Amalia who greets you and takes care of everything is delightful and anything needed is done. Definitely have a car. You can either walk down and up "into town" or drive down - parking is always pretty easy. Can't recommend this place enough!!!

Modica, UNESCO jewel of Sicilian Baroque famous for its ancient recipe for chocolate, is picturesquely spread out over the two sides of a wide rocky gorge. To stay in Modica means rediscovering forgotten emotions, walking slowly through the cobbled lanes, going up and down the ancient steps, catching glimpses of fine nobles’ houses with elaborate stone and wrought iron balconies, hidden artisan workshops, picturesque views of churches and rooftops, secret gardens with grottoes and prickly pear plants.

In every month of the year Modica is the perfect base to explore the fascinating South Sicily, a perfect fusion of sea, history and nature: from the baroque towns of Val di Noto to the famous Caltagirone pottery, from the ancient greek ruins of Siracusa to the wild nature of Cava d'Ispica and Cassibile, from old tuna fish premises of Marzamemi and Capo Passero to the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean sea, from Pantalica necropolis to Agrigento Valley of Temples up to Etna volcano.
